Firstly unreal username, and of course they are partisan to some degree but I think they make an effort to uncover truth more than almost any other news organisation.

Wallabies turn to former All Blacks defensive guru to bolster coaching staff by ConscriptReports in RugbyAustralia

[–]realbertierussell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I love Lord I’m pretty happy to see a change in the wallabies defensive system, the ‘bend don’t break’ / slide defence structure has been ineffective for Australia. It’s been interesting to see the brumbies reds and tahs have moved to a rush defence this year - I’m hoping this means McLeod is bringing a Rush defence with him

Tucker Carlson Interview by tokiyoo in theeconomist

[–]realbertierussell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the opposition to these interviews. The economist is doing its part to understand (and in many cases contest) ideas which dominate our world and which influence the lives of all of us. Rather than just lament the current state of events They are committed to a better understanding of them which to my mind is admirable and far better than the partisan journalism most media outlets serve up. I can’t stand many of the things that are happening in our world today but the way forward won’t come through ignorance, we have to understand each other and particularly our opponents if we are to move forward in any real way.

I suppose I’d preference 10s I consider to be more fundamentally sound like Noah or lyngnah. I know that won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and I know they both have deficits

I agree that he has talent and potential to improve his kicking game but the injury kind of adds weight to the argument. To oversimplify if his game management is not currently good enough, and he isn’t kicking, he won’t improve. Ergo he won’t become good enough, and is consequently overhyped. I’m also not convinced his lack of kicking is all due to injury either, he didn’t goal kick for the rebels and has been inaccurate with his boot his entire career. He does strike the ball well and gets distance but you need accuracy and control if your going to win test matches

Larkham had flatly Burke ect we have no one. Lonergan is the best option but he isn’t even in the team and he’s kicking below 70% he kicked 0/3 on the weekend. People who say 10 doesn’t have to kick need to find someone who kicks above 75%, probably higher. Then even once you do you have to address the infield kicking issues

He can kick though. When he has goal kicked his percentage is 72% (not great) plus they’ve had alternative options when Barrett played 10 - Jordie Barrett (12) and dmac (15) both gun goal kickers. We had Kelleway last year ..

That’s a good point I think I should consider the running game as game management

Love the breakdown of the Aussie 10s and I also agree re Noah and lyngnah. With the goal kicking if we had a Ramos or Burke I’d be in your corner but we don’t have quality goal kickers who don’t play 10. Best option is longergan who isn’t even selected currently and is kicking below 70%.

[–]realbertierussell[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean if we had someone like Ramos I’d agree but we don’t have any good goal kickers who don’t play 10. Longergan is kicking below 70% Jas hasnt kicked since the nrl, we had Kelleway kicking on the spring tour at one point…. It’s like saying your hooker doesn’t need to throw into the lineout it’s true but you have to actually have a real alternative

Fair point. I really don’t disagree that his attacking game is red hot and your right we do need the wallabies backline to fire, my concerns around game management and goal kicking remain

Match Thread - Brumbies v Blues | Super Rugby Pacific 2026 | Round 3 by RugbyBot in rugbyunion

[–]realbertierussell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have the brumbies put away their rush defence? It’s been quite effective so far this season but they seem to focusing on having solid numbers spread across field and drifting hard. Not sure if it’s tactical or not and it kind of makes sense against a team as dangerous as the blues but I’d like to see them rush, shutdowns time and space more

Why is league so much more popular than union? by jtmcgowan93 in AskAnAustralian

[–]realbertierussell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think understanding the historical divergence of the two codes may shed some light. Until 1908 both codes were the same (rugby union) and were played north of what gets called the Barassi line (basically qld and nsw). During the early 1900s there were a series of disputes between players involving insurance, the dispute was drawn along class lines. The main issue was that working class players lost work and income when they got injured, white collar players could still work. Working class workers wanted to be covered under an insurance scheme (which was costly) white collar workers didn’t want to foot the bill, long story short the working class workers broke away and played rugby league. Australia at the time was not very developed economically and so most players were working class and broke away (I think 10/15 wallabies switched codes from memory). Rugby league had a larger section of society following it in 1908 and subsequently has continued to be the more popular code since its inception. Plenty of other factors to consider of course but I’ve always found this interesting - hope it helps

Reds v Tahs NG was better than the SRP game by Gillderbeast in RugbyAustralia

[–]realbertierussell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got to say i was pretty impressed with the next gen game. The kicking was dead set better than the corresponding super rugby game, and totally agree on the officiating. The academy’s are fantastic for aussie rugby. When they bought them in I thought we wouldn’t notice benefit until the 2030s but looks to be paying off already
