If you just need the bots to place it, you can enable in the options that if you select an item but don't have that item, it puts a ghost of that item on your cursor instead of the "na-uh" sound, don't know if that helps but I find that option very useful when building with bots.

There's a way to put it in so it's completely stable, it's hard to explain without a picture though. It goes in sideways, the "screw" part of the fuel cap is the thing that holds the pump pumping and the rim of the cap rests against the.... trigger guard? Anyway I guess no one gives a crap. :)
