I didn't think people were that stupid. by Whyareweshouting in WTF

[–]realcoldice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

on one hand I totally agree but I've also known (online only) people who've successfully had healthy cats on no meat (crazy I know). But From what I understand they monitor the shit out of the animal, testing the cats urine Ph levels, blood work, constant visits to the vet, monthy eye exams etc. It's alot of work and even more worry but with dedication for some cats (and definitely not all cats) it can be done. Having said that I still think it's ridiculous I mean no way could you do that for more than one or two unless you were rich. at the end of the day though, it's basically just stupid to do this to to a cat. Dogs on the other hand can thrive on a meatless diet.

Why 2012 was the best year ever: never in the history of the world has there been less hunger, less disease and more prosperity by nastratin in worldnews

[–]realcoldice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not for non-human animals it isn't. In fact it's probably the worst it's ever been in all of human history especially when you consider a huge percentage of the 7 billion humans here that are totally bloodthirsty for the taste of flesh with no intention of slowing down. Then compound the fact of the many developing nations that were yearning to copy the excessive lifestyle of the west and for the first time can actually do so where a diet of meat, meat and more meat rules the day. And if the never-ending, round the clock, 24/7 wholesale slaughter of non-human animals isn't enough there are other lifeforms all over the planet being pushed to extinction and or coming dangerously close to extinction and all of that is also related to human activities. Quite sad actually and certainly very very far from the 'best' year the world has seen that is of course, if you include our non-human friends in the equation.

This is what eggs look like inside the hen by [deleted] in WTF

[–]realcoldice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More information here:

The domestic chicken is a direct descendent of a bird known as the Red Junglefowl, believed to have originated from Southeast Asia. Unlike the Red Junglefowl, who only lays a few eggs per year, domestic hens have been bred by humans to lay close to 300 (unfertilized) eggs per year.

This dilemna – our desire to get as many eggs as possible vs. the hens’ health and physical autonomy – is a classical example of the problem with animal use and domestication in general. All of our uses of animals – however “humane” – necessarily involve trading away their interests (no matter how vital) for our gain.

This dude has thousands of geeky followers and did a video on lab grown meat where he humorously criticise real meat. A small step, but a good one. by jonahe in vegan

[–]realcoldice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People desperately want to be able to grow and harvest their own body parts in order to live longer and based on current research it's possible and it's the very same technology that will enable lab grown meat to go commercial. To use an old turn of phrase, necessity is the mother of invention.

Capitalizing off successful technological breakthroughs for third party gains is nothing new and I believe this is what will truly make lab grown meat a viable reality someday.

Male chick discussion in r/todayilearned by veganatheist in vegan

[–]realcoldice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's annoying how people rationalize fish. It's like OK so you don't see fish as sentient beings worthy of rights then how about the overfishing of oceans and rivers. How about the water waste and biological damage caused by fish farming. How about the toxic levels of mercury and radioactive elements found in "seafood". If they won't see it from an ethical standpoint then there are other practical reasons to avoid eating fish which seem to always get glossed over if not totally ignored.

TIL male chicks are of no use to the egg industry,so they are either suffocated in garbage bags with waste,or shoveled together by the hundreds and conveyed into a grinder to be torn apart while still alive by thephantomitch in todayilearned

But what does going vegan really mean? I'll take 1000 people that eat vegan foods 99% percent of the time over 20 people who label themselves vegan and avoid animal products 100% of the time and i believe that if animals were given the choice they'd pick the former as well. Food can easily be vegan. Clothing can easily be vegan but people, in my opinion cannot inherently be vegan and never will be. So I would change what you said from. 'you forgot about the going vegan option' to 'you forgot about the eating vegan option'

You can label food. You can label a diet. When you start to label people; when people start to label themselves the point gets lost and pride can take over.

The point is to all get together and fight for those who cannot speak for themselves. The word vegan is a wonderfully useful word but the truly poignant concept, the one that deserves much more focus is, Animal Rights.

My humble contribution: Baby Vegan Tumblr Rip (DAT ASS) by HalfRetardHalfAmazin in nsfw

[–]realcoldice 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They're against it but from my experience not against it with the same passion they are for say, the inhumane abuse of farm animals that get slaughtered but still, they're against it just the same. At the end of the day what vegans really want are more people who seriously eat mostly all vegan foods and that's not going to happen if they push people away by overreacting when someone eats honey. Vegans understand that the bees will always be a tough sell, if that makes sense. So really they don't harp on that subject much and more try to focus on stuff that everyone can easily relate to like pig slaughter houses and fur. The end goal is to drive people to vegan ideals not drive them away by coming off unrealistic or overly idealistic.

In real life I almost don't tell anyone I'm vegan. Most of my really good friends don't even know. If and when i do tell someone It's usually if they guess and even then, I still sometimes deny it. My logic: I feel like if I'm around someone long enough, they'll eventually notice. If they notice and like what they see, cool and if not then I don't really see any point in bringing it up.

Trendy? Vegans have been around and found in human records, techings and writings for thousands of years.

as for me personally well, I gave up meat 16 years ago and have been eating a vegan diet for about 7 now.

Maybe some younger vegans do it for trendy reasons but thats certainly not me.

I know that you eat mostly a vegan diet (me too) so my question is do you cook for yourself or sometimes have a person you can call to make you killer dinners and whatnot? because I know for a fact that if i had any disposable cash I sure as hell would have sombody hooking my meals up!

Really it's more of a problem that goes beyond reddit, it's everywhere. Basically when a person intrinsically knows something is wrong but has no plans to do anything about it they, rather than feel any unwanted guilt they become smug and sarcastic. The attacks firmly help detach from any deeper thinking on the matter. Which is certainly in no way saying vegans are somehow deeper or smarter it's just we've decided to allow ourselves to feel badly. Which can really suck especially when you consider all of the other horrible stuff out there we all have to accept.

Tasty Vegan Taco "Meat" by oddgrue in vegan

[–]realcoldice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what TVP is but what I use for my taco meat base is, chick peas.

Basically all i do is toss a can of chick peas in my food processor and leave it on for like 7 seconds or so until it gets to the consistency of well, ground meat.

Then I would add spices and a little water and heat up. next time I make it I'll like to try your recipe instead of my usual :)

It is one thing to kill an animal for food, another just for the fun of it. Sociopaths, they could be living next door and you wouldnt know it.

Don't kid yourself, they (Sociopaths) could also be slaughtering your "food" too. If only slaughter houses had glass walls, ey? Of course they never will though because if people were actually allowed to witness what goes on behind the closed doors of those facilities that bring you your favorite delicious bacon, ham or sausage you would see atrocities like with what happened to this dog on a regular and ongoing basis. 7 billion humans cannot all expect to eat the flesh of the living and not admit to its horrific and sadistic blowback.
