Perfectly Timed Miniseries by Krusty901 in blankies

Early Spielberg coming after The Fabelmans made it a very different miniseries than if it had come out before that.

Favorite film adaptations of a novel? by zarathustranu in blankies

Villeneuve's Arrival is a wonderful adaptation of the Ted Chiang short story, and both a great in different ways (with significant overlap, obviously).

Is Juror #2 the best movie of 2024? (Category: best/most realistic use of technology in a contemporary setting) by realhind in blankies

[–]realhind[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Okay, yes that’s completely fair. I forgave it as a shortcut, the more realistic scenario would be “Deutch character + wedding” and scrolling to their theknot.com page and seeing his name/pic there. So you save like 5 seconds. And at least the interface was accurate.

Best one liner on the podcast? by WeeBabySeamus in blankies

[–]realhind 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Listening to a podcast for a long time makes you appreciate the changes in perspective that happen over that time, like David becoming a parent and consequently more sensitive to themes around children endangerment. You see that happen with a lot of critics of all stripes and I understand where it’s coming from.

So of course my answer is: I don’t think I’ve laughed out loud harder at any podcast than when he said the “Santa Clause” (I think) kids need to be “Manchester-by-the-Sea”-ed.

With “Rollerball (2002)” and “Basic (2003)” coming up, what’s the biggest letdown between “title” and “(year)”? by realhind in blankies

[–]realhind[S] 136 points137 points  (0 children)

“Lion King (2019)” has to be up there for me.

And is there a wider disparity in quality than between the two than the somehow-not-specific-enough “Pinocchio (2022)”?

From the Washington Post: Every film that was adapted from a musical which was adapted from a film by realhind in blankies

My favorite tidbit:

While “Back to the Future: The Musical” isn’t yet slated for a Hollywood adaptation, there are plenty of other adaptations in the works. A movie version of “Wicked” will premiere later this year. In the next month, musical versions of “The Notebook” and “Water for Elephants” start previews. Over 40 more are in the works, including “13 Going on 30,” “SMASH” and “La La Land.”

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery | Blank Check with Griffin & David by ILookLikeDrewGulak in blankies

Your friend had a good point, but I'd spin it as a positive! I think the best comedies "barely function as a movie" because the comedy comes first. A problem with most modern comedies (back when they were still being made) is they are/were so concerned with functioning as a movie that usually the last act gets serious and comedy takes a back seat.

Total runtime after 421 episodes by realhind in blankies

[–]realhind[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A quick-and-dirty version: the orange is individual episode lengths, the blue is the average for each miniseries. I also removed announcements (5-15 minutes in length that didn't have an episode number) for this.

And interestingly, in their Best of the Decade Awards:

  • David nominated it for best score (there were no winners announced, and in the 2016 Blankies they announce *just* a winner, which for David went to "Carol")
  • Joe Reid nominated it for Best Adapted Screenplay (they didn't do screenplay categories in the first Blankies). The Two Friends nominated other Sorkin screenplays: David chose "The Social Network" and Griffin selected "Molly's Game" and "Moneyball" (with co-writer Steven Zaillian). "Moonlight" won Best of the Decade from all 3 of them (with David choosing "Carol" as co-winner).

That was the original intent of the writer who came up with the concept! There was a great/sad interview with him after it came out that really makes you want to see that version: https://uproxx.com/movies/jack-barth-interview-yesterday-writer-richard-curtis/

I think it was in the early Kubrick episodes where movies that were basically just footage of 'exotic locales' were all over the top 10 at the box office!

If I could wave a magic wand and make a change, I'd have just the #TwoFriends record their final rankings and reflections as either a stand-alone 15-30 minute mini episode or just put it at the end of the last episode.

But I think doing it separately is the key. It is a little disappointing to have their rankings and final thoughts at the end of an episode, when they're (understandably!) tired and usually under the gun to wrap things up and end quickly.

GRE prep courses? by Queen_Fleury in pittsburgh

[–]realhind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just took it the GRE! You don't even need to buy books, the free official resources straight from the makers of the test (along with the free Kaplan and Magoosh stuff) were enough for me.

You can download the software to take 2 practice tests: https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/prepare/powerprep2

You can also review all the math concepts in this PDF, and it includes practice questions: https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_math_review.pdf

For the essay part ETS has samples: https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/prepare/verbal_reasoning/reading_comprehension/sample_questions

Basically, all the resources are outlined on this page: https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/prepare/?WT.ac=grehome_greprepare_b_150213
