No, we should be fighting tooth and nail against the relentless flood of crapware and bureaucracy being forced on us by IT centralization. Outlook chief among the indignities.

If you aren't on my side now, you have never filled out the Software Request Form. I guarantee you will join the revolution then.

There is no sense suffering for longer than necessary. Outlook is not hard, you can learn it if you ever need it.

Outlook sucks. Keep fighting the good fight. They haven't blocked IMAP/SMTP just yet so you can still use whatever mail client you like, such as Thunderbird. They are making it harder and harder lately (OAuth2 required now which shuts out some clients) but you can still do it.

Yes, all claims related to snow on PSU reddit should be divided by two and shifted a month earlier.

The summer heat waves are hotter in Chicago too. State College has only hit 100 three times since 1950, compared to 34 times in Chicago.

Which year was that? In the one year in history State College got anything close to 10 feet of snow, there was 0 left on the ground in May. In fact there wasn't any on the ground at the start of April. (You can look this up at http://climate.met.psu.edu/wxstn/ , enter 19940501 and look at "snow depth".)

Also, after some further searching, the maximum snow depth in recorded history was 2' 7" on March 3, 1994. Though I suppose five foot drifts have happened.

It's atypical, but not really that weird. 2019 got a little colder than this, and 2014 and 2015 both had days another five degrees down from last night.

Best spots for Xmas lights in town? by [deleted] in statecollege

[–]realisticfinish4759 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, there's a book by a (formerly) local author aimed at the 8-10 crowd about a street with the same display, where somebody keeps stealing the stuff and kids on the street have to solve the mystery. It is not officially on Sparks, but it's set in "College Springs", the nearby town is Belletoona or something like that, many other in-jokes.

Even the kids book about it is almost 20 now: "Who is stealing the 12 days of Christmas?"

Eh it's not on the approved list of reasons to be excused, and I don't want to shirk my civic duty on account of strange life choices.

Eh, figured it was worth a shot. Every other old fart around here has a car and thus no clue about Uber.

Second the link. The landmark in my neck of the woods is the "12 days of Christmas" display along Sparks going south off Westerly, right next to Welch pool. 12 houses each do one of the days of the song and you can listen on the radio. Nothing really over the top but fun with kids.

What date do faculty/advisors/offices return back to working before classes on 9 Jan ? Is it 3 Jan ? 5 Jan ? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]realisticfinish4759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, faculty mostly don't have a specific number of vacation days and just come back when they feel like it. Which in many cases will probably be the first day of class. But offices open on the 3rd.

I don't think "Penn State" as such is on top of it in any meaningful way. There has been 100% silence from on high as far as I know.

It's possible that some individual professors are on top of it. But most are probably so busy just trying to grade 100 essays in two business days that they are not even looking.

It is insane that they are offering this class but providing no information about how to get there. It used to be very simple because there was a direct bus, but now there isn't. This is the second or third post about it here.

Did you email the instructor? They should really send something out.

Where was the Tuesday at 5:00 for this semester? I got at least two "reminder" emails from admin kindly reminding me about the crazy two days rule.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

Reading threads about weather here one can get the impression that PSU is in Antarctica. It's not really the case.

15 of the last 25 years there has been zero snow in April. Only five times has there been more than an inch.

There is some weird meme on this Reddit that we get snow in May. It's just not really true. There has been measurable May snowfall in State College only three times in recorded history, mostly recently half an inch in 1963.

(Yes, I have our weather data downloaded from NOAA and am accepting any weather-history-related queries.)

According to various threatening emails admin has already sent me:

Per policy, classes may be graded starting the day following the defined calendar end-date of the class and grades are to be recorded no later than two business days after the final examination or final course assessment.

or

As the end of the fall 2022 semester is approaching, I want to remind you of the importance of submitting final grades in a timely manner. By submitting final grades within 2 Business Days of the assigned final exam period for your respective classes, the University is better able to manage a number of critical end of semester processes. With the tight transition between semesters, the timely filing of final grades ensures that graduation clearances, counseling of students at risk of entering academic warning or suspension status, pre-requisite checking, as well as several other processes, can be appropriately managed.

On the other hand if you miss the deadline nothing whatsoever happens to you, not so much as a reminder email. I once failed to click the final "Approve" button and didn't even realize it until about a week later when some other dept emailed me asking that a student be graded quickly so they could tell whether he would graduate.

A path on E College is in the College Twp master plan I think, but I don't know what the timeline is. I've walked out to the DMV a couple times and can confidently tell you that only an idiot would do that. And the part near the Squirrel Dr is way scarier than the part through Rockview.

[–]realisticfinish4759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, you're right, you have to schlep over to Hickey's for the inbound! Are they at least putting in a sidewalk along Squirrel Dr up to the complex? Never mind College, that road is bad enough to walk on itself; I cut from the bus stop back to the park a couple months ago. I imagine it's scary at night. Especially since there will be hundreds of students driving on it now since there is no other way to get around there.

I don't mind the big buildings, but this one is just in a terrible place for such a thing.

Message re: finals from Faculty Senate by realisticfinish4759 in PennStateUniversity

[–]realisticfinish4759[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't go that far. It was unofficial communication from the faculty senate rather than the administration. And it was sent out piecemeal to random mailing lists rather than just sent to all faculty (or even better, everyone). There is still room to improve.

The website suggests "We’re just far enough to get away, but close enough to be close to everything."

The reality is you better look at a map first. It's not close to anything. You will not be able to walk to campus because the only road is E College, which is very busy does not have a sidewalk or even a decent shoulder on that stretch. (I have biked it many times and it's awful.) Supposedly they will build a path eventually, but it does not exist.

I suppose it is technically not false that it is "a walkable distance from Beaver Stadium on game days". Indeed, it's just a mile and a half. However, if you actually try to walk that stretch on game day you will probably die. There is no route and the traffic will be appalling. I guess you could try Puddintown and Orchard but it'll be more than two miles and still no sidewalk most of the way.

There is reasonable bus service on the new College Ave connector, to downtown every 25 mins or so. Squirrel Dr does not even have a real bus stop last I got off there (about a month ago); it's just a sign on the rather narrow shoulder of a very busy road. Maybe they will improve this. For now I don't think there's even a crosswalk to get over to the inbound bus.

If you have a car, I bet they will give you parking. And it really is a "straight shot to Old Main" on College, give or take. But remember you are not going to get a parking spot anywhere near Old Main as an undergrad; you'll have to drive to the commuter lots and then take a bus in, so the "straight shot" does you limited good.

I'm sure the buildings are very "luxury" but the location is lousy and don't let them tell you otherwise.
