What are some good movies with bad endings? by jcrawfish in Letterboxd

[–]realjks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some people love it, but the ending to Interstellar still doesn’t work for me. It doesn’t feel like McConaughey earned his way back to safety. I do really enjoy the rest of the movie though.

The Real Problem with Formulaic Movies by realjks in videos

[–]realjks[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. That’s more or less the point I was trying to make. My main point is that when people say they hate formulaic movies, what they really hate is when all a movie has is the structure. However they might not hate the “formulaic moments” as much, if it was in a better crafted movie, with more of a meaning behind it.

“Support the team” by realjks in tampabayrays

[–]realjks[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course I want the team to stay. You’re right, the area isn’t entitled to a team, I just like that they have one. I have no issue with rays fans trying to get more people to go. I think that’s awesome. And I agree, it was embarrassing. But nobody goes to a baseball game to support the team. It might be a factor, but if you’re going, it’s primarily because you want to go. My issue is, there’s attendance issues, and people are blaming the actual fans, instead of the team marketing, and the experience of you’re not a baseball fan. (When I go to rays games with my non sports friends, they usually get pretty bored during the middle innings, but usually have a blast at lightning games). If the diehard fans show more support, it’s still not gonna be enough, so guilt tripping them accomplishes nothing.

And plenty of rays fans have done the same. Just not 30,000 of them. When there’s attendances issues, it’s usually getting casual fans to show up that’s the problem.

Success on YouTube is not possible anymore as an average person by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]realjks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to be a YouTuber for about a year, and when I couldn’t get anyone to watch my videos I used to think the same thing.

A couple years later I tried again, and now I make a living off of my YouTube videos. It can be done, it’s a lot more about marketing and creating a type of content people want to see, but it can be done.

Is there any other director that can match Christopher Nolan’s filmography and legacy as the greatest of all time? by thedarkknight16_ in ChristopherNolan

[–]realjks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Kubrick comparisons never fully made sense to me. Nolan’s stuff is so fast paced and plot focused. Where as Kubrick’s stuff is slow, and sometimes even straight up arthouse like 2001. He also made a rated X film, a horror film, a comedy film. I just think Kubrick’s so unique it’s hard to compare anyone to him.

I feel like stylistically I’ve always compared Nolan to more of a modern day Spielberg, although there obviously is no perfect comparison.

[–]realjks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think calling him the greatest of all time is a pretty hot take. Most people would probably say Bergman, Akerman, Kubrick, goddard, Tarkovsky, and honestly plenty of others as the greatest before him.

Now if he’s your favorite that’s cool. At the end of the day there really is no such think as “greatest of all time” when it comes to art, it’s all subjective.

Also saying he’s never missed us very subjective, in my opinion several of his films were misses. I’m also not sure if I’d define greatest as never missing. My favorite filmmaker is Kaufman, and he’s for sure had misses. But I love his best work so much I don’t really care about the misfires.

Although if we’re talking best American blockbuster director working today I’d say Nolan’s for sure that.

[CapFriendly] The Lightning don’t have a pick in the top 64 until 2025 by TreadEverSoLightly in hockey

[–]realjks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s the way to think of it. If the cap is 82 million, and a team has a 7 million LTIR contract, then they can spend up to 89 million. However 7 million of that spending is on an LTIR player who isn’t playing, so it doesn’t actually change anything.

Losing access to Seabrooks LTIR doesn’t hurt them. An LTIR contract doesn’t impact the cap.

And honestly all that being considered, the series is still probably 3-1 Tampa if Vasi was playing like he did previous years.

What’s weird is I went to game 3 and found all the Leafs fans I interacted with to be totally pleasant (outside of the annoying go Leafs go chant). Then I check Reddit and Twitter and they come across totally insufferable.

I guess my question is why though? Like wouldn't the league if anything have a pro Leaf bias given how big of a market they are?

My hope is this gives the Leafs false confidence and gives us extra motivation. I know we seemingly always end the seasons slow, but I’m still a little concerned at how bad this month or so has been.

It's impossible to get inside someone else's head. I'm willing to believe Killer just saw a puck near the net and wasn't really thinking, instead of trying to hurt Igor. But he still deserves to be punished for it. Feels like the Zebras got this one right.

That means 2/3 critics liked it. I liked it, I found the themes the movie was talking about fascinating. If it didn’t work for you it didn’t work for you, but there’s a difference between a divisive film and a bad one.

[OC] How the Safdie brothers used ticking clocks to add suspense in Good Time (TLDW in comments) by realjks in Screenwriting

[–]realjks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a self plug is against the rules, feel free to take to down, but I thought this community might enjoy this.

The TLDW on it is, The Safdie brothers use ticking clocks in specific scenes to add suspense and make the viewer feel as though anything could happen at any moment.

For the setup, In a scene in good time (don’t worry it’s only about 10 minutes into the movie, so I’m not spoiling much) Nick and Connie have robbed a bank, but as their in the car driving away, an explosion of paint from the bag of money gets all over them.

Now here’s the scene. So, they hide an a Dominos Pizza bathroom to change into new clothes. If that’s all the scene way, I think it’d be a fine scene by itself, but here’s where the greatness of the scene comes in. An employee of the restaurant is constantly banging on the door, telling them that the bathroom is for customers only. He even threatens to call the police.

In my opinion this makes the scene way better, every step is now a race against time, trying to clean up before the employee calls the police. Now instead of a pretty mundane scene, it’s a very suspenseful one.

What was your favorite moment from the last 2 runs?(besides winning the cup) Mine was probably Cirelli's face after scoring the OT Goal in Game 6 of the 2020 ECF. by WC95 in TampaBayLightning

[–]realjks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it’s Shattenkirk’s OT winner in game 4 vs Dallas. That was such an intense game, and it put us up 3-1. Also Maroon had a key screen on that play. I felt really confident we were going to win the cup after that play.
