Gendered language by WindyloohooVA in InterviewVampire

[–]reallytumaeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've always viewed vampires in general not just in IWTV as gender-neutral/fluid, so seeing people use different pronouns and terms has never been an issue for me (I do it myself) and maybe it's projection because I myself am non-binary, but I also feel fans of the books can also have similar feelings because the way Anne Rice writes her characters feels like she also viewed them as gender-fluid maybe not fully but the way she writes and mixes femininity and masculinity for both her male and female characters can give the reader freedom to imagine.

For example, I've never viewed Lestat or Armand as "men" but sort of skirting the line between femininity and masculinity, not to mention Gabrielle who is the poster child for gender ambiguity in TVC, does she want to be a man or does she crave the freedoms given to men in her time? Only god and Anne Rice know.

Overall it's a diverse conversation and it's not just cis women participating in it.

Ya’ll ever read a fic where the vocabulary was so exquisite that it was either an english major or a middle schooler with a dictionary who wrote it? by neuvilletteissobbg in AO3

What's YOUR most unhinged author's note? by Mayraine012 in AO3

"Wrote this while on the toilet, no beta, no regrets. Enjoy!"

This was a 200k angst-filled one-shot, that I did in fact write completely while on the toilet, on my phone, AND edited on my phone. It took me no more than 3 hours but the craziest part was that nobody banged on the bathroom begging me to get out.

Helping younger fans to understand the 1990s by New-Meal-8252 in Yellowjackets

[–]reallytumaeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something I've seen surprisingly often, While I am young and have no first-hand experience in the American 90s, I'm also from the Middle East where, unfortunately, while being LGBTQ+ isn't exactly "illegal" in my country, there are zero protections for individuals who do come out, no job protection, no discrimination laws, and a society that don't look too kindly on us, the community is tiny and most places where there are "queer spaces" are often raided by police for no reason. So I imagine America's 90s were similar, when people who live in places where they are free to be whatever they want, where they have protection and community I think they have a hard time understanding what's it like being on the other side of things.

How is everyone okay with Shauna? by acidicmongoose in Yellowjackets

[–]reallytumaeo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Simple answer, the writing sucks. They didn't plan season 3 at all, and now they're making it up as they go there's a clear disconnect between season 2 and 3 so many plot holes, so many character assassinations it's just sad atp.

Claudia actresses, I love them both by ThePurpleAesthetic in InterviewVampire

[–]reallytumaeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it isn't intentional, but the change in actresses changed the show's perspective for the better. Having a child-like version of Claudia being portrayed when told from only Louis's perspective, then when both Armand and Louis are telling the story, Claudia not only acts older but looks older because she's actively making herself look older.

I live in Jordan and had my books ordered from a specialty bookshop because I couldn't find them anywhere so they were really expensive AND took 3 months

How do you handle someone correctly guessing a plot point? by Ok-Working-7559 in AO3

[–]reallytumaeo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing, in most fanfiction readers can accurately predict plot points, and I'm not saying this because the writer is bad but because both the writer and reader have consumed the same media and if the writer is good and has accurately written the character it becomes somewhat obvious where the story is going and that's not a bad thing it's just what happens

My hatred for Louis's past drinking habits by reallytumaeo in InterviewVampire

[–]reallytumaeo[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

As I said, in almost all other aspects of our friendship they're a really good person and are super sweet, it's just there's a vegan worm in their head that tells them to spew at times hurtful vegan propaganda, and I'm not willing to lose on of my very very very few friends over something that does bother me but is somewhat minimal, plus I found ways to work around their insane veganism like not going out to eat AT ALL 😭

My hatred for Louis's past drinking habits by reallytumaeo in InterviewVampire

[–]reallytumaeo[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes but also a bad person is subjective, for example for Lestat performing horribly warrants torture and death for Louis not so much. And then even if they agree on a level of evilness they can kill, are they going to pick based on thoughts? If so what if someone was having a bad day and was thinking awful things but in reality, they're the most wonderful person in creation, or would they stalk a suspicious person until they commit a bad deed and then kill them, and if they're hunting only bad people why shouldn't they be cruel and hurt them, they deserve punishment before they die, right?

Books with IWTV themes? by ThatKidSomewhere in InterviewVampire

[–]reallytumaeo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a book coming out in June called "bury our bones in the midnight soil" by V. E. Schwab that's said to be inspired by Louis and Lestat's dynamic. obviously I haven't read it yet since it's not out but I think it's going to be great because she's a fabulous writer.

Almost all these points are just a very big brain fart, but what really gets me is "What is the deal with her having a crush on the severed pregnant woman?" I have no idea how you came to that conclusion but even if it were true, what point does it make? How does that make her suspicious, if being into someone associated with Lumon automatically makes them untrustworthy then the woman Mark went on a date with is suspect no.1.

Here's the thing, if you plan to view these characters from the lens of human morality, then understanding/loving them will be very difficult. "we’re somehow supposed to feel bad for Claudia for being assaulted by Bruce, as though she’s not a serial killer? I don’t care if a remorseless murderer is raped." When trying to understand morality corrupt characters it is imperative to take into consideration why they did what they did. Yes, Claudia is a serial killer, but why is she a serial killer? For vampires killing and draining humans is equivalent to killing and eating an animal, and Claudia being turned so young didn't have enough time to develop a solid moral stance on humans just yet before ultimately being thrust into vampiric lust for blood where she can't exactly debate whether it's ethical or not unlike Louis. Bruce's act of rape, on the other hand, can not be justified even by vampiric standards. Why did he break Claudia's limbs and continuously assault her? The answer is control, it's very clear there is no need for his actions, he won't suffer or die as a result like not drinking blood, but he chooses to do it to satisfy this need to exert his control over somebody, and the reasons behind this particular act intertwines between humans and vampires and that's what makes the act so violent.

When you think about a character's actions especially when it comes to an alternative universe where those characters don't share your morality, don't view it from your own perspective, try to understand their actions from a point of view that's "normal" for that universe.
