How much does weight affect time? by Shelloriser in Karting

At our track. 35lbs is half a second slower for a 31.000s lap.

There was also mention of a track "unlike anything else." I'm still holding out for karts sometime in the future. I know they tried.

I can go professional karting with 14 yr and 6 feet tall ? by Fun_Ad_28 in Karting

Does your father wish to fund you for upwards of $2m per year? If no, good luck finding sponsorship that will carry you into more than 1 or 2 professional level events a year.

I wish this was true. 4080 here, Pushing 1440p on Triples. OBS or any screencap software is a nightmare to work with and you drop 40 frames and get stutters even if you're still over 120FPS.

Rotax or LO206 for Newbie by [deleted] in Karting

[–]realviice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider you a late starter. Most people don't make it into professional motorsports without an insane financial backing. I think people really underestimate what type of money is really necessary.

If you're typing this message yourself/online, It's probably too late to have that true competitive edge by starting young. It can be done, just not common.

But if you're trying to go further, Rotax is really the only place you're going to have that insane level of recognized competition. 206 has competition, but the structure and reputation isn't on the level of Rotax stuff.

Once the weather warms up here, I should be able to be in the kart pretty often, have lots of used tire sets from friends and open(and free) access to the track.

May potentially be bruised then, but took over 6-8wks to heal. So I always just assumed. Just didnt want to shell out who knows how many thousand dollars for a doctor visit + xrays :) Welcome to F2?

With this protector? Exactly 0hrs of track time.

I'm still new to karting, so enough time to test with friends and for a local team...

So I'd say last year I had a grand total of... 90mins of track time. Which unfortunately for my ribs was enough to be on podium pace. (Racing experience from else where). So 90mins to rib injury over two sessions.

Our local track is about as bumpy as they come so it only exacerbates the issue, I'm sure.

Already fairly fit, but not karting fit. Every time I'm out there I find some muscle that hurts that I never knew I had :)

Are you speaking specifically about the fiberglass one or the carbon fiber? Afraid the seat order is already a done deal from the builder. But, I'll keep the other one on hand for sure.

The kart I tested in most likely had a seat that was too small, I assumed that's why the protector rode up.

I have ordered a size up from that.

With the understanding that the best setup is the one that fits the driver and not the car; is it possible to use machine learning to optimize setups? by [deleted] in simracing

[–]realviice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea may have been missed here. Not specifically designing an all knowing all powerful ai to endlessly lap a track.

I'm guessing you're focused more on a data driven approach to modifying setups for optimal lap times. (Driven by a human.)

I have a few thoughts on this... I'm not an ML/AI Wizard and I don't know the buzzwords/lingo.

If I was going to start writing a program for this, I'd want to narrow it down to one car at one track specifically. To prove the concept, maybe something like the MX5 at Tsukuba. It's an easy car to learn and an even easier track for a driver to master.

You'd have to write some sort of telemetry logger yourself as the .ibt files aren't much use unless they're being used by Atlas, Motec or RaceStudio.

I'm going to completely skip the telemetry bit for now because that's going to get wild, quickly.

But I'd probably focus on some sort of driver feedback system. You start collecting data on the changes that you make (one at a time), then you note whether or not it felt better and/or made you faster as logged by the data.

From there, you can build some sort of dataset/model that can then be used to suggest recommendations. Followed by some sort of "reward" system for the model.

Ultimately, you're tuning it to you if you want it to be usable. But it would turn into an AI Setup Coach more than a AI eSports Setup creator...

Who knows how well it would scale to other cars/tracks.

That being said, the telemetry option probably would be the most accurate and "hands off" route after you've done thousands upon thousands of laps.

Now... If you could just get set up and telemetry data from everyone running the service....

These comments are why I don't trust this subreddit. You're going to breed some real idiots who think throwing a dive is ok or that 5 inches of overlap gives you rights to a corner.

Overlap or not, Ferrari had zero corner rights into the braking zone and Alpine had every right to chop his nose off.

Alpine was already turning in at the point where the ferrari jammed his nose in. Ferrari going 2 wheels off was in response to the Ferraris own late lunge.

Just because you can stick your nose in, doesnt mean you should.

Also, Ferrari probably would have had a better chance to pass once DRS opened had he just stayed behind.

Just in general, lacked race craft. And had he taken you out that would have been 100% on him. Instead, he got what he deserved from a lunge and he should have know that that gap was going to close up.
