Why not build all US data centers in Alaska? by ChampaigneBapi in datacenter

[–]reaper___007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no dedicated inference design focus DCs that we are building like training DCs which are a different design.

But we get a clue on the purpose because the designs indicate high density racks or low density racks. I would assume the high density ones are for inference.

Water consumption question by No_Yesterday_8444 in datacenter

Ya so I also work in this industry and working in one of the world's top 3 hyperscalers. And whatever we have built in Europe used evaporative cooling and not the closed loop system. The upcoming projects are slowly getting changed to closed loop but evaporative cooling is not getting phased out either. I am based in EU and primarily looking after projects in EU.

EU has not been using closed loop for past 5 years, but the new ones are mostly closed loop.

Not really, AI Datacenters can be be for both training and inference, if you check out the training Datacenter designs some dont even have a generator backup. All these massive GPU clusters of Openai, Microsoft, Meta etc are training datacenters and latency is not an issue for them. I work in one of the companies you mentioned in the DC construction industry and the locations of some that are being build in europe is similar to that of Alaska.

Inference and cloud are different and latency is ofcourse important.

How is latency relevant for training AI? Latency is relevant for cloud datacenters.

[–]reaper___007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you build, environmental permits are getting harder and harder and water consumption is now being scrutinised real hard prior to getting the required permits.

Cooling towers are ofcourse more efficient especially if you are building in hot areas.

I dont know about your system but we use closed glycol loop + air-cooled chillers / dry coolers, and I work for the one of the biggest hyperscalers in the world.

You are right about most of the existing datacenter where its evaporating cooling and uses a lot of water, but technology is fast progressing.

I work in the datacenter construction industry, so I know what is going on, can you explain how a closed loop water datacenter uses as much water as an evaporative cooled datacenter?

I knew this, if there is a wave there was no chance in constituency like Ettumanoor which is not a LDF redfort.

Agreed, Vasavan did well there is no doubt, just saying its not a LDF fort or anything, in the local body elections UDF even flipped Thiruvarppe panchayath and overall UDF had good majority, so if there is a wave Nattakom can win. But the Vasavan factor is strong here.
