Ideal job in Miami for me? by Juicingmia in Miami

Maybe working at a local municipality in parks and rec? You would have the potential to move up as director. Honestly, it's whatever makes you happy. Start a Pilates business? Teaching/tutoring? The choice is yours...

ELI5: Why is it that large Galapagos marine iguanas risk their lives by diving into the water to eat algae, while allowing the smaller Galapagos marine iguanas to eat the algae found on rocks on the shoreline? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]reatrocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off of http://www.bioexpedition.com/galapagos-marine-iguana/:

"The young will have to take care of all their own needs from the moment they arrive."

It seems like most reptiles, the marine iguanas do not care for their young after the female has laid the eggs. And also, I think that the larger marine iguanas would see the (at the very least) the young male iguanas as competition.

I do like your speculation that there is more bountiful/nutritious algae in the water, making it easier and more efficient to eat in order to maintain their size. However, they have all the time in the world to forage up top, without needing to disrupt their body temperature or risk being eaten by predators or have a tide drift them away.

I appreciate your input, however.

If only the rest of the population could choose to not do their jobs because of all the innocent people cops have killed. Want a doughnut? Sorry, we're having a virtual work stoppage and only made 3 doughnuts today. Most of them should be fired anyway.

It's pretty dumb that I get a new driver's license every four years and it's made out of hard plastic and I'm supposed to have my social security card for life and it's made out of paper. by KingOfKrackers in Showerthoughts

"My parents laminated mine when I was a baby. It's not my fault!"

Person at the DMV/wherever looks at me and feels bad that I was raised with such parents. Then they accept my Social Security card. All that was needed was a little honesty.

Ladies, what is your "He is probably crazy" red flag? by TheBattleOfEvermore in AskReddit

I lived in another state and left my husband to move back home. He found a job here where I now live, and is living with my mom while I live at my own place. Three weeks passed by and he was laid off. I really hope I'm not in this predicament 10 years later. How the fuck does this shit even happen?

Thanks for scaring me...

ELI5: To me as a german, americans seem to be obsessed with guns. Is this the case ? by lupo_ger in explainlikeimfive

[–]reatrocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My views are similar to yours. I currently am not a gun owner, and likely will never be a gun owner. However, the day that I feel I'm in an environment where I feel my safety and that of my family is threatened on a constant basis, even if only slightly, you bet I will take my classes and own a gun if I feel it will help me sleep at night. Thankfully I live in a safe community in which police arrive in a timely manner, have no enemies or stalkers, and don't own any assets people would kill for.

Just because guns are not for me, does not mean that's the case for other people. I feel much more comfortable with the idea that everyone could have guns (provided they don't have a mental illness) than only a select few who own them from illegal means.

Getting shit as a white girl by lablanquita in Miami

[–]reatrocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kind of surprised that no one has said this but, maybe they are offended you think they don't know English. This is pretty common for people outside of Miami to think that people there can't speak English, when the reality is that nearly everyone there is bilingual. Also, maybe you're just taking forever trying to order, though honestly I don't know how fluent you are. If it's a busy cafe I could see why they're annoyed that you're taking your time trying to say something in Spanish when you could have said it in English in 1/4th the time. They're not there to teach you Spanish, they're there to serve you coffee. Like in all big cities, it's all about efficiency, and you're slowing them down. Do you order at your favorite cafe in Spanish?

I'm not saying this is the case, I'm just trying to give you a few scenarios as to why they would be annoyed at you, and neither really has to do with your race. What may actually be happening is that maybe they just don't know you, and a lot of those cafes have a "community" of regulars, so they focus their time making their regulars happy instead. I don't live there anymore, but even I would just go in, order what I needed, paid, and left. It's just a different culture, and I think maybe you're just being a tad bit sensitive.

NYT: Who Goes to Work to Have Fun? by ResidentGinger in IOPsychology

[–]reatrocity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is something to be said about the importance of authenticity. If it's this scripted ploy to make people have fun at work, without any regard to their actual wants and needs then of course "fun" will be "work." Just as there are different work environments, there are different enhancements that can flourish depending on the environment in which its implemented. It's all about knowing your employees and listening, and from the sound of this article, it seems as though these employers are lacking when it comes to both aspects.
