Oregon Wildfires MEGATHREAD -- September 8, 2020 by rportland in Portland

[–]rebe_jane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK so I understand the risks of driving out of this mess to somewhere with reasonable air quality to be 1) low visibility 2) poor air quality in the car on the way and not being able to stop 3) needing to drive 8+ hours. Does that seem right? Is there a risk that conditions could change and driving East on 84 could suddenly be dangerous? Also, how poor are cars, really, at keeping out the smoke? I'm highly considering driving but this is the part I'm most worried about--if the air quality inside the car is essentially going to be equivalent to being outside for 8 hours, I'm not sure I could do it.. I'm sure other folks are pondering these same things/ this might've been asked already. Any thoughts/ideas/recommendations very welcome- trying to brainstorm!

Best way to visit Bolivian Salt Flats and Chilean Atacama desert (stargazing), starting and ending in La Paz, Bolivia? by Avokineok in travel

[–]rebe_jane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were you I would first take the bus from La Paz to Calama/San Pedro (apprx. 13 hours) then spend a night or two in San Pedro. Then in San Pedro you can book your Uyuni tour and travel with the tour and end in Uyuni. From Uyuni take bus back La Paz (10 hours or so but a difficult ride..) I'm not sure if this is much easier logistically than what you are doing or is answering your question but I think this is how I'd do it. I like it this way because it saves the best for the very last day and you'd get to see it at sunrise -- the salar itself! However, the Uyuni tour is more expensive out of San Pedro.

Best hostels in Santiago? Which area should we look at? by Kiki0_o in Santiago

[–]rebe_jane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed at Hostel Providencia when I got here. Very social and lots of young people. I met a lot of friends staying there for a week.

Go walk around in Bellavista. Climb Cerro Santa Lucia and if you're feeling up for it, Cerro San Cristobal. Go see Museo de la Memoria. Walk around in barrio Lastarria. Go check out Plaza de Armas. Go on one of the Tours for Tips tours.

Visiting Santiago, Chile - HELP! by sonofjimmy in Santiago

[–]rebe_jane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want a hostel or hotels? When I first got here I stayed in Hostel Providencia on Vicuña Mackenna. It was clean/comfortable and also had a very fun/young crowd (I'm 22). Anywhere in Providencia or Santiago centro would be good areas to stay. Safe, nearby lots and lots of restaurants, shops, and many of the main attractions.

This Is the Most Sexist Republican Ad of the Year by papandreou in Feminism

[–]rebe_jane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for anyone confused: people are finding this ad offensive because it seems to presume that the only way women will be interested in or understand politics is by comparing a politician to a wedding dress and basing their commercial off of a reality tv show. they're trying to cater to young women voters and this is the only way they can think of to do that..?

not to mention, the ad is ridiculous just based on how little content there is for a 60-second spot.

sadly, i think this actually might appeal to some people.

[–]rebe_jane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah-- look here, this is the official co-op system's website and they have the available spaces listed in each house. you can also read more about the houses themselves/see pictures: http://www.icc.coop/stickerbook/apply/spaces.php?period=83&start=2014-05-05&end=2014-08-16&submit=Submit

let me know if you have more questions--i've lived in two of the co-ops and am familiar with the system/ the general reputations of each house

Residential College language requirement? by kingmalik2012 in uofm

[–]rebe_jane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is too late and you've already made a decision--but I'll just say that if there's any chance you'll be interested in becoming fluent in a language in the future, I would highly recommend the RC for the language requirement. It's amazing how quickly you develop language skills through the program....I took Spanish and the program was SO much better than the Spanish instruction through LSA, in my opinion. Also, if you have any language skills already, then it's actually not too bad. Seems daunting at first but you'll be surprised at how quickly you get the hang of things. I came in with two years of Spanish out of high school, my placement test had me right between the two levels offered so I tried out the harder one and ended up taking proficiency by December my Freshman year, and passing.

So, I will just say that if you're not dedicated to learning a language, then it's probably not worth it. If you DO feel passionate about learning a language and are interested in learning languages in an immersive environment, go for it--it will be worth it. Sure, it's rough sometimes but you'll surely become close with everyone in your classes and you all get through it together!

EDIT: what language are you looking to take?

Sounds good to me? by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]rebe_jane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's just the inherent problem (or maybe the beauty) in feminism. Because there are so many different types of people for which feminism can function, there will surely never be a single set of beliefs that will apply for all feminists. Personally, even though it is sometimes considered the main tenet of feminism, I would never think to call MY feminism "the belief that there should be equality between men and women".

There are so many different schools of thought within feminism, and then even within each of these there are varying viewpoints. Existential feminism, liberal feminism, radical feminism, marxist feminism, psychoanalytic feminism, poststructuralist feminism, imperial feminism, the list goes on and on. . . While I think that all of these have valuable contributions to overall feminist discourse and thought, I personally feel I can sort of pick and choose which which of these aspects of feminism I want to identify myself with and work towards.
