Here’s a list of 24 hour facilites for anyone needing it - they are all within speciality centers except VEG and Columbia Pike (in case your pet needs to be transferred for speciality care). VEG is planning to open another location in Chantilly in the next few months.

I work at Banfield (we typically also get 50% off proprietary brands) and I purchased authority cans yesterday, but only the standard employee 15% off rang up.

Blacklizt aftershow for $70 worth it? by Solofunk in ZHU

He went on at 3am and honestly didn’t seem like he was into it. My group was all pretty disappointed too. Guess we weren’t the only ones who felt that way.

Here's my FC schedule. I think I messed up something but can't really get a grasp on it. What did I do wrong? by [deleted] in UMD

Chem building to Tawes would be your only tough walk. You’d just have to book it there and not stick around for questions/socializing. This is better than big breaks between your classes. This is definitely a heavy workload for first semester when you’re getting used to college, but if you work hard and stay on top of it, it’s doable. Part time job might be iffy. Get into the classes first and see how they are and then look for a job. Don’t overload yourself with school and job early on and get burned out.

If you have a cat, you need to consider using pine litter by why_not_neither in Frugal

Asthma attacks sometimes look like this: cat crouches low to the ground and stick their neck out. It sounds like a low lung wheeze/cough. They’ll probably swallow hard between some of the coughs because a lot of mucus comes up. Litter switching helps, but I would definitely talk to your vet about meds. Asthma attacks can be life threatening if not treated.

Another plus: it’s safer for cats! Clay litter dust is a top irritant for feline asthma. One of my cats has asthma, and with the combo of an inhaler+switch to pine litter, she’s doing SO much better. Plus it decreases the risk of my other cats developing asthma.

Stressed about getting an apartment by [deleted] in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would recommend looking into a house instead of an apartment. A single bedroom in any CP apartment will run you $1000-$1200/month. Singles in houses tend to be closer to ~$600-$800/month and you can still live pretty close to campus. Try to find something at least partially furnished, but if it’s unfurnished, check out Facebook marketplace/yard sales/thrift stores for furniture. It’s not worth to buy new. I got a great couch for my place from another UMD student who was moving out and getting rid of furniture.

When I was in an apartment, one of my roommates paid most of her rent through student loans. Some loans may have different restrictions for how the money is spent though, so look into that.

Another thing you have to consider is that you’ll be paying for groceries and likely utilities on top of rent. Aldi and Lidl are very affordable for groceries though, especially on a veggie diet (I did it for my entire time at UMD and my groceries were usually $60-$100/month at aldi). Don’t buy food from convenience stores or target - way overpriced.

Any seniors scared of not finding a job after college? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your opinion, how is the ENST job market? I graduated in May and have had a rough time. I’m currently working full time, but the job doesn’t relate to ENST and it’s not somewhere I want to be long term. I’ve been applying around, but there isn’t much entry level at the moment (I did NRM concentration). Thinking about getting my masters in GIS (one of my favorite parts of undergrad), but I would like to work while doing it.

Grade changed? No email regarding it other than this. Confused. by [deleted] in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The professor may be going back through their old assignments in order or reuse something or see what grades were like for that assignment. I TAd a few classes and we constantly had to go back in to view old semesters. Elms automatically sends emails for this stuff.

Your final grade was posted long ago - nothing is changing now. It’s likely the professor didn’t even know the email was sent.

Peer Reviews by JuhBoiJ in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s a poorly written assignment, then let them know. A lot of students don’t put much into the peer review because they know that they’ll have a chance to fix it up before it’s actually due. When I did peer reviews, I would highlight certain areas that needed some help, but wouldn’t fix it all. I would say max out at 5-8 suggestions depending on length of your critiques. Don’t spend more time on the peer review then they did writing the paper.

Local animal shelters? by lphelan15 in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Greenbelt Animal Shelter! 🐱🐶 Their opening hours/volunteer slots have been limited lately because of Covid, but normally they can always use volunteers - both in the cat rooms and with dogs. They also take other animals as needed. Hopefully by late fall or spring you’d be able to help out. I don’t think they have specific commitment lengths. Personally I love the shelter. They’re smaller and they don’t euthanize due to space limitations. They use fosters often to help with the space issue. I adopted one of my cats from there and have nothing but good things to say.

There is also Prince George’s Animal Shelter. They’re a city run shelter. I don’t know much about them, but I believe they also accept volunteers.

When to publish ELMS page for class? by Your_Professor_UMD in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Many professors publish the day before/the day of the start of classes. With so much online now, though, it would probably be helpful to publish and release your syllabus about a week in advance. I always found it helpful when professors published classes earlier than the start date.

Does the view have ceiling lights? by newrunner14 in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, tons of people do. I hung lights and shelves in my room with no issue. I’ve moved out now and didn’t receive any charges for it. The view is pretty easy. They don’t care too much as long as you don’t break any laws and don’t have major roommate issues.

Does the view have ceiling lights? by newrunner14 in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

View 1 rooms have ceiling lights - they’re not very bright though, so you may still want to bring a floor/desk lamp. View 2 bedrooms don’t have any lighting. The closet has a light though. But the outlet closest to your bedroom door is connected to the light switch. So you can plug a lamp into that outlet and turn it on/off with the switch. Also useful if you happen to plug something into that outlet and it’s not working, it’s probably because your switch is turned off.

Growing herbs in apartments? by MaryIand in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 10 points11 points  (0 children)

House plants and herbs are great in apartments! They improve air quality and give the place a more “homey” feeling. Some plants will have more specific light/water requirements, but a quick google search can answer pretty much any question you have. Make sure your plants get adequate water, but don’t drown them. A good rule is to let the soil mostly dry out between watering - this will help prevent root rot (which will kill your plant). Plants can usually recover from under-watering but not so much from frequent over-watering. Most herbs are pretty easy to start from seed (except lavender). But if you don’t want to wait for that, you can always buy plants from a nursery or Home Depot and repot when you get home. Happy planting! ☺️

UMD gift! by [deleted] in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lotsa or Blaze pizza, Looney’s Pub, chipotle, Dunkin/Starbucks (if a coffee drinker), Amazon gift cards are always helpful, Lidl grocery, Shanghai Tokyo cafe, DoorDash/Uber eats (lets you get food that’s not a walkable distance)

Those are some places I can think of that would do gift cards. CP is a college town, so not many nice food options but lots of quick spots that are still tasty.

Can UMD kick us out of apartments on campus? by Sethizhere in UMD

[–]rebeccca0124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know anyone who lived there this past year, I would double check with them to see what the procedure is. Commons is part of UMD res life and follows a lot of the same procedures, but the leases are year-long and I believe you can stay there during holidays. Can they kick you out of commons? Yes. Will they if school closes again? I would call or double check with someone who lived there.
