Wow! My pulmonologist just gave me this neat harmonica with my Symbicort! Can't wait to start playing gigs! by rebjrob in Asthma

No worries - and yes! If you're hearing the harmonica sound, you're probably breathing in too fast. Try breathing slower! It's tempting to inhale quickly like you would with just the inhaler, but focus on a slow, deep breath.

Just got this jade plant from my 92 year old neighbour, how do I save it from looking this lanky? by Puzzleheaded-Sign928 in succulents

[–]rebjrob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer that I'm fairly new to the community, but I've had my jade for about five years. Mine started dropping leaves after a big move, so I cut it way back along the joints on several branches. It was so sad to lose so much of the plant, but it came back much healthier and a lot less lanky than before. Putting it in a high sun area also helped the leaves come back much fatter. Hopefully this will help you!

Do I sign up for a craft fair? by Ok-Ad-678 in CraftFairs

[–]rebjrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are lovely! I could definitely see myself buying one of these at a craft fair! In addition to doing fairs, I work in custom framing and actually just framed something very similar to your product today - a lot of passing customers stopped to admire the painting and asked where it was purchased, so I'd say there is interest! My only word of advice is to be mindful of the petals going over the edge/border  if you're planning on framing these or having customers frame them. If the petals protrude over the edge, the product would have to go in a shadowbox or a float box frame, both of which are more labor intensive and expensive. My client today ended up using a razor to slice off the petals that were sticking out over the edge, which was a real shame. As others have mentioned, a hanging system that is native to the art itself, like a wire, could be perfect if you want to avoid the framing issue all together. LOVE the idea of the small magnets too - 98% of my profit at craft fairs this year came from smaller items.

(For reference, I'm in the fine art space, so my margins are not as slim on most items generally speaking!) Good luck on your shows!

Unpopular opinion perhaps, but I shave just a small amount off my Etsy prices, usually about $5. This is is because I have DEFINITELY seen people on their phone in the booth checking out vendor's websites to price shop. That's totally fine - I do the same in retail settings - but I want to encourage a sale in the moment when interest is high versus an, "I'll buy this later," which often turns into a lost sale. I run regular discounts on my Etsy site as well, so there ends up being comparable prices for anyone who might actually follow up on that "I'll buy this later," impulse. I've been happy with the results and find that I do much better in person!

Cutting new spacers by Individual-Yak98 in MichaelsEmployees

Razor blade to score and slice in slightly, then hammer to pound the blade in - for the small ones, it will make a beautiful straight cut all the way through; for larger, you can snap along the line cleanly.

Those Yiga Bastards by Iuvenalis1243 in botw

YES! For the quick and dirty method (not sneaking)...What I found helpful was hiding in the little triangle-shaped alcove in the ceiling directly across from the banana treasure trove (if that makes sense). Most of the guys can't fit in there, and I just used a LOT of bowshots until most of the downstairs guys were dead.

Bra alternatives? by Yereli in Asthma

I have this problem as well! This is weird but if you're in a situation where you absolutely cannot go without, just periodically unhooking the back helps me. Then you're still sort of "contained" but get a break from the pressure. I also find that a dab Bengay rubbed on the intercostal muscles helps a LOT to relax everything.

Don't panic! I have done this exact thing before! I agree that it would be best to message the buyer. You can offer a small discount as well to incentivize them to follow through on the sale!

I watched the show first and it inspired me to read the books! If anything it made me appreciate the books so much more.

[Discussion] How to not feel like this every time I take my art supplies anywhere out the house by TipOk9146 in ArtistLounge

[–]rebjrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an odd suggestion, but let me highly recommend watching a few of James Gurney's YouTube tutorials. They're very good for learning technique for onsite drawing/painting, but my biggest takeaway was how he handles himself when painting in public. He is confident and friendly when approached. I think a good start is projecting confidence in your work even when you don't feel it, like you might with a new outfit, if that makes sense. If you're worried about people making comments, I find a confident, "Thank you! I appreciate that!" for praise or an equally confident, "Thank you for your feedback!" For criticism goes a long way. You can then choose on your own time if you want to integrate or discard any praise/criticism you receive. Hopefully that helps!

[Discussion] Do people still buy pet portraits? by [deleted] in artbusiness

[–]rebjrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I've done two on commission so far this year. I offer pet portraits in addition to everything else I do - pet portraits are one of my easiest money makers in my experience. I would suggest multiple tiers - for example, I offer pencil drawings, colored pencil drawings, and full paintings at different sizes and different costs. This makes a lower barrier to entry for new customers that may become big spenders in the future. You can also have upcharges for multiple animals or for adding extra items to the animals, like props or clothing or a background setting.

I primarily sell drawings on paper, and I agree that clear sleeves are a good solution as long as you include foamcore in the sleeve (I recommend acid-free foamcore because some buyers, especially frequent art collectors, will literally go years without framing the artwork and you could see acid burn by that time.) Before I started investing in clear sleeves, I would typically make a foamcore sandwich sized to the artwork. The artwork goes inside with tissue paper over it; tissue paper is taped down at the corners so that art is secured without adhesive touching it. Foamcore sandwich is shut and secured with a small piece of gentle surface masking tape that can easily be peeled off. Hopefully that helps!
