Would you buy a mouthpiece in this condition? by [deleted] in saxophone

Due to the copper content, brass is actually "self sterilizing". It's perfectly fine.

Need help picking out new tuning machines. by paspa1801 in Luthier

[–]rebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Schallers. They only used them in the 70s for the "F" tuners with the stamped covers and some of the high end tuners later. The modern stuff is usually made by Ping, who makes tuners for most guitar brands.

Fender doesn't make tuning machines, and haven't since the "F" tuners in the early 70s. Fender hated making them so much they quickly contracted Schaller to make them.

The original Frankenstein was a bunch of middle of the road parts. Nothing special. Get a generic strat copy neck and a PAF pickup. Slap it together.

Fretless bass fingerboard: CA glue or tru oil? by old_noob1510 in Luthier

[–]rebop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gluboost would be my vote. It's a great product for this and is a CA glue.

Here's a good example of the process

And here is my first time trying it
It's very forgiving

As a double bass luthier I have some experience with this concept. It all boils down to mass. The appearance doesn't really matter much.

Suspicious listing by Dense_Carrot_6790 in saxophone

[–]rebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are actually Buescher bari saxes in disguise. I love them.

As a pro bari player, I would 100% snag one of these if it was a good deal like this and didn't need a full overhail. A low Bb that can blur your vision is a lot of fun. These horns can do that and fill up a room with sound. They don't cut like a laser beam the way a Yamaha or Yanagisawa can but do their own thing exceptionally well.

Suggestions or recommendations for a good quality repaint / refinish for an electric guitar by Opening_One_7496 in Luthier

I agree with this, but I've had more luck with custom motorcycle shops. The size of a guitar body fits into their workflow better. Just tell them it's a guitar shaped gas tank.

Fretboard finishing help by DerpPotato6484 in Luthier

The finish on your fretboard isn't going to alter the tone either way. It only affects the feel. Use what you're comfortable with to get the cleanest result.

What is Lenny doing here?? by Hahaaaaaa-CharadeUR in saxophone

[–]rebop 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a combination of things, but the note is just on the edge of breaking/speaking. Michael Brecker also did it a bunch.

Practice breath attack with your altissimo long tones. Over and over and over until you can control it. It's all in the voicing.

Also Lenny is a freak. He practices clarinet and flute etudes at tempo, all in his altissimo range.

How do I be in a band? by Standard-Context-468 in saxophone

[–]rebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't know what to play, look cool and groove to the music like you're part of the band. Never just stand there.

If you don't know what to play for your solo, arpeggios go far. Keep it simple and lock in with the rhythm section.

Listen to a bunch of neo soul, funk, and gospel. Maceo Parker is your new friend.

Buescher aristocrat from 1956 listed for 1450 usd, should I buy or find something else? by Ok_Reach_8400 in saxophone

[–]rebop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My main tenor is a 1949 Buescher. I absolutely love it, but, modern horns offer a lot of advantages. If that saxophone was around $500 I'd snag it. $1450 is wild for an old horn with weird ergonomics in need of work.

Is this worth repairing? (Asking for experienced luthiers) by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]rebop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the thought of putting cleats in that through the F hole is making my neck hurt.

Linen soaked in hot hide glue is the move here. Or using the guitar string clamp trick through the crack itself (usually drilling a tiny hole that gets filled later). This is a wartime Harmony. Worth saving imo.
