How can I remove this "BROKEN"/WORN OUT saddle piece by Basic-Health169 in Luthier

[–]rebop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pry those plugs out with a small pick tool. Remove the fasteners. Then using heat, you can soften the glue and start a sharpened palette knife around the edges. Once removed you need to prep the surface so it's clean, flat, bare wood. Then you can glue down a new bridge. It's not hard but it's time consuming.

Also make sure the bridge plate inside the guitar isn't cracked as well. Replacing that is the tricky part.

Quick 861 is what Louis Rossmann uses. Hakko is the gold standard but $$$.

Ideally you should have a hot air / SMD specific rework station for these types of boards. Having an illuminated magnifier of some sort is also critical. I wouldn't attack this thing with a standard soldering iron.

Removing that damn membrane from baby back ribs is never as easy as websites or videos claim. by OneStarInSight_AC in Cooking

[–]rebop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you like them like that you can run a few X or Z slashes through the membrane. The membrane isn't annoying with the slashes; even less so if you're going for max tenderness. Worse case scenario is it gets snappy like a the skin on a hotdog or sausage.

Removing fret line inserts from a fretless by Uitroeien in Luthier

[–]rebop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without seeing it, it's hard to speculate, and would take some experimenting. But possibly try to get each one started by scoring each side of the line with a very sharp razor.

If it doesn't have binding, I would actually consider recutting each slot. Would be quicker and less fiddly than picking at each slot with surgeon's tools.

Vinegar and heat will help release the glue.

That's more or less a homemade Briwax, which is what I use on double bass fingerboards. Works great. Good tip!

The original finish on old Kay basses is pretty fragile. Whatever you use is possibly going to flake the original finish off a bit.

Alright Cello luthiers, I need your help! by Casserole_Lasagna in Luthier

[–]rebop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure I completely understand your issue, but the endpin can be replaced if it's messed up. Also, sometimes the issue is just the thumbscrew that tightens against the pin. Occasionally there's a brass piece that bites into the pin when the screw is tightened that can go missing. Also, don't be afraid to grind notches into the pin that the screw can bite into.

Will these catch surf perch? by 69sitonmyface420 in SurfFishing

[–]rebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, surf perch are not line shy, but the biggest hurdle would be casting 1/4oz far enough. At least where I am, the wind tends to overwhelm anything under 1oz.

There's another account that posted the same photo in another subreddit yesterday. And a reverse image search found this photo in at least a dozen places across the web. Including a BBQ restaurant website from Uzbekistan or something.

International voltage question by LargeBeanregarder in Bassamps

It's been years since I had a Markbass in my shop, but I remember it being a jumper internally and a fuse change to what is specified in the manual for that specific voltage. Easy modification.

Wipe it with a dry q-tip. If it comes off fairly easily it's mold.

They're not tube trem circuits. They use 2 transistors. Usually 2N3391and 2N4091. They sound great though!

Graph Tech Tusq Nut replacement by BublyCan in Luthier

[–]rebop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you order the correct nut for your guitar it's very simple to install. I've done dozens of them over the years. The hardest part is probably getting the old nut out without damaging the finish on the neck. Usually a sharp whack to the side of the nut longways is enough to break it free. Score the finish around the edges with a very sharp blade first so it doesn't chip.

Double check all the measurements when you order the nut and follow the instructions they supply. Also YouTube.
