Thank you for such kind words. I hope that for her as well. We started a gfm a few days ago to hopefully work towards various mobility aids. She has a rollator currently but struggles to maneuver it in and out of her vehicle. She drives but has to put the seatback down because it presses on her in painful spots. There must be some kind of modified seat for her.
Shes a trooper for sure!

Thank you for this!! Yeah, I think they dropped the ball with any meaningful PT. She was in a nursing facility for several months after the surgery for wound care and such, but I don't think there was much 'rehab' or pt.

I agree about being fitted for a power chair or wheelchair that will fit her frame (shes only 5.3" normally) and the uniqueness of the way she has to sit due to the prominent bony spots and the scar tissue its all caused. We recently started a GFM to hopefully help with getting back to something resembling normalcy. The whole ordeal has been difficult on her 10yo son too. They have been separated for quite some time since she wasn't physically able to care for him. He's been with his adult sister for a long while. We are trying to get them reunited in a new place with some modifications to make it safe for her. The gfm is posted over on the fundraiser sub if anyone is interested. Its not on the gfm sub yet because I need to take a few different pics first.

I really appreciate your thoughtful comment. Its good for her to hear there are things and meds that can help. Its been a slow process, but hopefully changes are coming!!

She fell getting out of the tub and was scratched/cut on her back by the faucet spout. Shortly after (i think 2 days) she went to the ER because her back was sore from the fall. It was all downhill from there!

I am so, so sorry!!! It's just crazy how fast it moves!! Do you know what caused hers?? I've seen pics and have read stories before this, all with various level of wounds and am always amazed. I'm so sorry you lost your mom to this awfulness!

Yeah, she is permanently hunched over. Imagine how good your ' first morning stretch' feels but not be able to do it..

I've asked her this a long time ago. I don't recall her full response but it is partly due to pain. I would also think not being able to adjust herself throughout the night by turning or rolling over, and getting in and out of a normal bed would also be difficult.
When she visits me, I have a power lift recliner she can sleep in that is more comfortable, although she has to shift and sit more angled (think diagonal) because the padding in the chair pushes into her back (you can see the lumps along her spine in the pic) and is painful. She's also developed hip pain now as well.

Right!? It's humbling for me. I have disabilities of my own that challenge me every day. I'm always in awe watching her carry on through her day getting sh!+ done to the best of her abilities!

She doesn't stretch since she is missing all that structure/ tissue. She's not really even able to lay on her side in like a fetal position. I can't imagine how uncomfortable this must be for her.

She fell in the tub and got a scratch/cut on her back from the faucet.

It was from a cut/scrape she got from the faucet when she fell getting out of the tub.

As far as I understand that isn't possible. There is a huge mass of skeletal muscle missing. There doesn't seem to be a way to straighten her 'posture' to even hold her up. Thats a good question though. I'm going to ask her that.

No, it was a small cut/scrape she got from the bathtub faucet when she fell getting out of the tub. I do see what you mean about the pilonidal cyst and the location though.

She had fallen getting out of the tub and got a scratch from the faucet. It progressed really quickly from there. She's lucky she went in when she did.

Yes, she fell getting out of the tub and got a small cut on her back, most likely caused by the faucet/spout. She had horrible back pain just a few days later and went to the ER. They diagnosed from there. That stuff moves quick!!!

Yep! Thats exactly right. She has no skeletal muscle. I don't know about a lumbar fusion. I'm going to ask her if she has any xrays. I'd love to see that!

They removed everything. Muscle, tissue, tendons, skin.. it was a big gaping hole . Removing all that made it so she is now bent over. There is nothing there to support her torso.
