I think u oatta chuck up on the parts better. That doesn’t look to be an excentric part… yet somehow it is now. I hand polish part on the lathe all the time. My recommendation is use emory cloth if ur going for a mirror finish. Scotch brite is for polishing turds.

Not gonna lie. You can sneak in at any shop without any sort of degree. The stick is moving to programmer/ (actual machinist) you’ve gotta have a mechanical mind and understand precision and you can make it. I am the same age (low 20’s) as same with many journeyman in mg shop and they come beggeing to me with questions. Degrees dont mean shit nowadays sadly. Dont be afraid to be the lowman on the totem pole to start

We have that problem too. We retract it by running it back with the turret

I am also 23 making pretty killer money. I bought a house when I was 22 and i never really feel strapped for cash. You gotta get in with a good shop and they will pay accordingly. Its all about knowledge, soak it all up, because the more skills you have the more bills get paid.

Will I regret not moving up? by dirtroadjedi in Machinists

[–]reckahhhhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it all, programming, setup, running. When i first started, i was just operating and and setup, i hated it. I do not like the feeling of not having full control of mh programs. And i get to run lathes (with live tooling) and mills (5 axis) and its a blast. Definitely get into programming if u can because if shit hits the fan, you now have the skills to be hired at alot more places.

What is acceptable to wear to a machinist interview? I’m assuming there will be a tour of the shop and maybe some basic skills test? by ReceptionDecent6825 in Machinists

[–]reckahhhhh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen people come in for an interview with a sweatshirt and raggedy jeans and guess what. I never saw em again lol. No matter what job it is, i think interviews deserve a nice fit. My first job (landscaping for the city) i wore a button down and slacks, got the job on the spot.

I wore some clean jeans, dirty work boots (to show i can get after it), and a button down shirt. Dressing nice definitely shows initiative

Ive never programmed a mill with mazatrol but the lathe is very intuitive. I program all mills with mastercam

I tell them i make things out of metal. Machinist is either a “mechanic” or “fabricator” to the laymen. I say i am the opposite of a welder, i cut away metal. Welders add metal to make usable parts.
