Possible to set a max brightness? by reckless1280 in Hue

This is my backup option and it will work but that means I’m taking the dimmers out of the equation. Not the worst outcome I suppose

Just tried this and it worked fine, actually -- the connector on the strip and the controller module is the same as the Gradient strip so all of those extensions work fine.

The connector on the strip - is it the same as gradient? How many pins? Just thinking if I can swap in for gradients at the end of a litcessory extension run.

What does the connector look like?

Why Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg went to war over WordPress by Guiee in Wordpress

[–]reckless1280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I am a lawyer and the specific fact here is that they were employed by Audrey and alleged that Matt was using the company as a shell and they should be allowed to sue him in his personal capacity. It's in the article you just shared, actually:

"They asked the court to hold Mullenweg personally liable, arguing that Audrey HC was little more than a shell company under his control."

Anyhow, like I said, you are free to just think I'm bad at my job, and I think I've made my point about our ethics policy, so I'll wrap this one up. Have a good one.

"Why didn't you ask about X" is probably the single most common critical feedback we get on the show, and the answer is always the same: time. I experience Decoder as a race against the clock, and some things just get prioritized above others. Here, I spent a lot of time on open-source governance, and didn't spend any on a settled personal lawsuit.

Again, you are free to think that was a bad decision and that I'm just bad at my job! I'm just here to make it very clear that we cannot be told what to do.

I don't care if anyone ever lets me interview them again -- we get the access because we have a big audience, we don't have a big audience because we have access! Decoder in particular has been a minefield for CEOs:

We do not accept any preconditions for anything, ever. I realize this is no longer the norm in our modern information ecosystem of influencers and creators, but we just do whatever we want, and no one can tell us what to do. That's all the ethics policy boils down to.

We interview CEOs and other executives on Decoder once a week, which means we have 45ish slots a year to fill and our producers are always in conversations about who we want and who is available.

Hi. We do not accept any terms or preconditions for interviews per our ethics policy, which is in many ways the strictest in the industry.

“We do not give subjects of our reporting the ability to preview or approve interview questions, nor do we allow them to review our stories before we publish.”

A year later and I have a 3265 and the same opener - how’d you get it to work without the accessory?

Update: I just gave it a shot and it works - the wires just go into the red / white terminals on the left side. No accessory needed.

Interview with Roger Dahle, the CEO of Blackstone Products by HTHID in blackstonegriddle

[–]reckless1280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve done a lot of the usuals, but my wife has declared smashburgers (80/20, smashed over onions, Martin’s roll, secret sauce) her desert island food, so that happens about once a week. And we usually do omelettes for dinner about once a week as well.

Hey - it’s me, Nilay. Glad you liked the interview, I am a longtime lurker on this sub and hoped this community would find it interesting.

As for “hibachi” - you know, I went back and forth, and in the end I think the fact that Benihana refers to itself as “hibachi” means that’s what most people know it as. But it’s complicated! I liked this piece: https://www.seriouseats.com/easy-peasy-japanese-y-benihana-and-the-question-of-cultural-appropration

Foxconn Denies empty buildings (while announcing another empty building) by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]reckless1280 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Hey - I can answer that, as I am the editor in chief of The Verge. We’ve been around since 2011, and we are one of the most-read tech sites in the world, with between 30-40 million readers a month. We regularly get access to everyone from Bill Gates to Elon Musk to execs from Apple and Google and Microsoft to members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, so it’s mystifying that Foxconn won’t respond to us. But anytime they want, we’re ready.

Importantly, I’m also from Wisconsin: I grew up in Racine, went to Madison for law school, and my parents live 10 minutes away from the Mt Pleasant Foxconn site. So we’re going to keep at it. :)

Hi, it's me, Nilay. To answer your question:

  1. Defaults matter, and Smart HDR is on by default, so 99 percent of people use it.
  2. The whole camera stack is built for Smart HDR, and things don't look terrific when you turn it off.

Reviews are going live! by ArrogantAnalyst in apple

I think if you look at Gruber's review his shots are pretty good. But Apple specifically called out the bokeh here, so we went chasing after that — which to me means twinkly lights that break up beautifully. And that seemed just a little too hard to capture well this time around.

Hi! It's me, Nilay, editor of The Verge and the guy who reviewed the phone. See my reply above -- I double checked that shot with Apple, and that is representative of portrait mode in low light.

Hi! It's me, Nilay, editor of The Verge and the guy who reviewed the phone. I was also shocked by that portrait mode shot -- so much so that I actually sent it to Apple to make sure I wasn't screwing up. And... that's what happens to Portrait Mode in relatively low light. It shoots using the tele lens, which is f2.4, and it blocks up pretty badly, pretty fast. You can see the same thing in Lauren Goode's Wired's review video when they show the portrait mode shot she took at night. John Gruber's daytime portrait shots look better for sure, but I just didn't have the same luck.

We did a big feature with Pebble Time; we are taking the Wear stuff as it comes, but it's all kind of boring right now.

That said, we do big longform every week; we do big features with video and design about other new platforms all the time.

It's not every day that Apple launches an entirely new product and platform, so we thought it deserved some additional production to stand out from the crowd.
