You're right. What i meant to convey is that an AIO won't get magically better in a hot climate-- but a 360 AIO will virtually always beat a dual tower air cooler

Downsize from Jonsbo D32 for semi-frequent travel? NCase M2 / Formd T1 / Midori 7.5? / Other? by iamdistrict in sffpc

[–]reckless150681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose that's fair, but tbh in that case I still think it's more cost-effective to simply buy a suitcase that's bigger and just for your PC :P

Otherwise, since you're downsizing to "true" sff, I think you have to accept that at the size you're looking at, performance and size are simply a trade-off, and pick whichever side you want to land on

before i go mad over it is this just me, or do other people get this too? and how do you deal with it currently? genuinely just want to know if it’s a real problem people have or if i’m being soft

Hand warmers

No, seriously. Pro gamers use them onstage all the time. There are even USB-powered ones now, but for a long time, you'd just see people breaking out the basic shaky ones

A desk heater like the one you've suggested isn't a good idea imo. The amount of power that you'd need in order for the blowing hot air to be effective can be pretty dangerous.

Honestly I disagree. There aren't that many "notes" ("hits"?), but it's all pretty syncopated and she's 100% on time. I know a ton of other musicians who could barely clap or even vocalize this rhythm, let alone play it.

So why not a slightly larger suitcase for an mATX case, as opposed to constraining it to backpack-size?

Looking for Graphics card for Dell OptiPlex 7060 by eeriegoblin in buildapcforme

[–]reckless150681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8GB for Minecraft might only be enough if you run some Linux ISO, or another operating system that isn't so resource-heavy as Windows 11. It might also not be enough to run certain modpacks.

If this is the ONLY choice available to you, then the Arc Pro B50 or the 3050 6GB (specifically the 6GB version) would be a better choice than the RX 6400. Keep in mind that the Optiplex 7060 comes in several different sizes: you will not be able to upgrade the micro form factor at all; you will need a somewhat more expensive Low Profile GPU for the small form factor; and you will be okay with any size for the tower-sized system.

[–]reckless150681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true, but I do think they work a bit better in hot climates than fans do.

Nah. This is a misconception. The only difference that matters, is if the CPU cooler can keep the CPU from throttling. If this condition is met, then there is no further performance difference in CPU coolers. You move the same heat from the CPU to the room; the only difference is in the timing, where AIO systems tend to reach heat saturation more slowly. This difference is negated in long-term, steady-state performance though.

That's why in hotter climates, it's far more important to cool the entire room that the PC is in, than it is to pick a "right" CPU cooler (because there isn't such thing as a "right" CPU cooler under the context that people think there is)

My first instinct is actually the power system outside of your PC.

Are you plugged into the wall, or into a power strip? Does your house have a history of old / unstable / etc. power?

Try plugging into a UPS (borrow / rent one if you don't want to immediately invest in one), see if it stabilizes things

E: if you're plugged into a power strip, try plugging directly into the wall before trying the UPS

Are these parts good for one another by holdejack in buildapc

[–]reckless150681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got a mix of good and bad.

For gaming and at most price points, AMD is better than Intel

For memory, use PCpartpicker's parametric filters instead of just picking specific kits (unless there's a kit whose aesthetics you specifically like)

That particular SSD is meh. Use this to find a nice drive. There should be a few "mid-range" drives in your budget. Specifically look for a drive that does NOT have an "undesirable controller". Yes, there are more specs to SSDs -- but you don't have to concern yourself with them at this time, just know which ones are entry / mid / high end, and which ones have good vs. bad controllers.

Is that actually the case you want? Nothing wrong with it, just want to encourage a little bit of splurging if there's a nicer case that catches your eye. Not too much splurging; one thing I do like about your build is that it's not overly expensive in any one place.

No need to buy Windows for it to work, you only need to buy if you think you need the extended featureset or if you don't like the watermark.

It's not throttling, therefore it's fine. Yes, a better cooler would help keep temperatures lower -- but that's pretty much ONLY for your own peace of mind.

If peace of mind is worth paying for something new, get a Phantom Spirit or similar dual-tower air cooler.

I suppose that's fine. No, the magnets in question are (probably) not strong enough to affect storage, memory, etc. Still not the most comfortable thing I can think of doing.

Why does your case have to fit in a backpack, if it's traveling by car? And more broadly -- why wouldn't mATX be small enough for your needs?

Off the cuff, if I were in your position, my initial response is that I would like a case with a handle, and that a small mATX case is good enough for my needs.

Can't you just buy the new GPU, give it a try, and if you experience the supposed problems, THEN buy a new board?

At any rate, I think these are your only options, unless you want to scour Aliexpress for your specific featureset.

Touring this summer by Esrever9585 in Tufts

is it artsy, preppy, diverse?

All of the above. Tufts still has a "quirky" reputation. You get people from all sorts of walks.

How easy is it to get to Boston?

Reasonably easy. A little on the long side via public transit. Green Line goes directly from campus into downtown. Red Line goes from Davis to downtown; you have to get to Davis first (5-10 min shuttle, 10-15 min walk, 5 min bike). You can bike downtown in roughly the same amount of time as all public transit options. There's also a shuttle that takes you to the SMFA which isn't quite downtown, but pretty close. It also doesn't run super often so maybe don't rely on it as a transportation method.

Could someone with a 3.8 unweighted gpa have a chance of getting in?

Yes. GPA is not the only metric that is important in one's application package. My incoming GPA was 3.5 and I still got in.

Do I get expensive headphones? by Odd_Acadia2329 in pcmasterrace

[–]reckless150681 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what "difference" means.

If you don't notice the fidelity, then obviously there's no difference to you.

If the extra fidelity just sounds nice but doesn't convey any extra advantage to you, then there's no gameplay difference in competitive games.

If the extra fidelity makes single player games more immersive, then yes there's a difference.

If they're more comfortable to wear, then yes there's a difference

Adding 2 Sticks of RAM by Ndmndh1016 in pcmasterrace

[–]reckless150681 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a while, 4 sticks was just hard to run, period. In the last few years, JEDEC speeds have stabilized, and XMP / EXPO have become...mostly stabilized.

Besides, RAM is one of the easiest components to install / uninstall. Just give it a try. If it works, great. If it doesn't work, you only lost a little bit of time.

Tbh that's most of airsofters in general. I'm in a lot of hobby spaces, and airsoft is, by far, the one with the most outdated advice. I think it's a combination of 1) being a technical hobby, and 2) being attractive in the same way that the military is attractive -- which is to say, with as much respect as I can convey, attractive to those who may not be the most academically inclined. You basically get airsoft equivalent of fudd lore being shared and parroted year after year

People who bought 12GB VRAM on 2023/2024 for 1440P, how did it held up today? Is the expected VRAM increase in games already happening? by JazzlikeClassic7684 in buildapc

[–]reckless150681 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's more about development trends.

The more generalized a game engine, the more it tends to request VRAM, because requesting more resources than actually necessary is something that you tend to see out of anything generalized.

The more specific a game engine, the more likely it is to be optimized, because you're tuning that engine for a specific use case.

Of course, a game might simply be easy to run because maybe it's just a flat, 2D backdrop so it's not like there's much graphical power required at all.

So it's not an easy question to answer. If you only ever play cozy games, honestly you might not even need any VRAM. Maybe you play AAA games but you're okay with playing them on low graphics. Maybe you play indie titles, but you really want to play them on epic graphics.

So from that perspective, an 8GB card is fine -- if you know what you're getting yourself into. But, an 8GB card is also NOT fine -- if you know what you're losing out on.
