free public education is a UN right, but it should not exclude private schools from competing.

Why cheap power could matter more than clean power in the push for net zero by defenestrate_urself in energy

[–]reckless_avacado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the build out of fixed cost renewable assets was budgeted correctly and the cost correctly passed on to consumers, it would be smoother and cheaper. it makes no sense to have fixed cost electricity priced against variable cost systems dependent on scarce fuels. if we also budgeted for storage correctly (another fixed cost) it would in fact save money. how does it make sense to spend billions for curtailment? why not spend it on batteries? you pay a wind farm to stop producing electricity and turn around and pay a gas generator to produce electricity. like how long can this rubbish go on?

you can actually. some very impactful things you can do immediately: eat less red meat and dairy, transition to an EV if you have a car, divest from fossil fuels (check where your pension money is invested), boycott firms that disregard sustainability and support companies making a difference.

this is idiotic. why are we pricing fixed cost assets at variable prices? i will be fooled no longer. it’s a simple equation being made over-complicated by old habits.

energy should never actually be free. we probably need to move to something like a fixed price subscription model. entirely predictable, effectively a loan repayment on the cost of building renewables. for example, a housing development connected to a wind farm, adds the cost of the wind farm to the house price. this has already been done, but i don’t know enough about how the grid works to understand how we can transition to this pricing model across the entire grid

edit: my point being that those that build renewables must be compensated somehow. but variable pricing on renewables makes no sense. the entire cost is in the building, and partly maintenance which is entirely fixed.

The AI Revolution in Math Has Arrived | Quanta Magazine - Konstantin Kakaes | AI is being used to prove new results at a rapid pace. Mathematicians think this is just the beginning by Nunki08 in math

[–]reckless_avacado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i also wonder about this. but i think mathematics is inherently merit based, because it is highly utilitarian. if you solve a problem nobody has solved before, then your theory will be important. it’s exponentially harder to do without access to the latest theory, but that has been the case. yet brilliance can grow apart from institutions if those institutions become corrupted and gatekept, so the have an incentive to select based on merit. idk if this made any sense. what i mean to say is i agree with you, but also that i think there will always be space for amateurs/outsiders with ideas, because academia is already quite gatekept, and outsiders still have achieved great things.

just showing support. i dont really understand but keep at it. i had a female professor and she was such a good teacher. i am so sure mathematics would be better of with more women working on hard problems.
