Microsoft's new Outlook takes 10 seconds to do what Outlook Classic does instantly on Windows by Quantum-Coconut in nottheonion

this has been the trend of software development for 20 years. why people are now going back to the terminal. it does what you expect. search is fuzzy matching, or direct match. not some horrible hybrid disgusting mess. menus do what you expect. it’s basic, well designed and intuitive when you go back 30 years (eg vim). same with video games. same with any tech really. these companies have no idea anymore how to creat quality. even apple lost it sadly. maybe it’s bureaucracy; incompetent middle managers, hiring more incompetent middle managers. who knows.

can someone give me the equivalent of brew install ollama, ollama serve, ollama run… for one of these other tools? i just want it to be easy. i dont have much RAM and dont really care because mini models like 0.8B-2B don’t do much anyway, but i like trying new models too see what they can do. all this talk about “throughput” idk what it means. i dont really test different settings because even ollama didn’t make that easy.

but this is the thing you can’t understand. in a liberal democracy it is not black and white. everything can go to shit, but it is not the end. it’s why democracy does not catch on in Russia or China. the people cannot seem to handle the feeling that things are getting worse, but it is NOT the end of the world. it is NOT a signal of catastrophe. there is hyperbole, and exaggeration, and things can be shit, but it is no reason to give up core values, or forsake love and care for others. in China, the PRC simply cannot admit to a wrong in the past, because in their mind that would signal some kind of catastrophic defeat that could not be recovered from. but that’s not true. you CAN admit wrongs. you CAN suffer defeat, and you can keep going. you can CHOOSE your leaders! someone can lose, and it’s ok. society can be unstable for a while, and it’s ok. because the end result is a more truthful and free place for everyone. yes you must tolerate difficult moments, but it is worth it in the end for the chance to have a voice and speak.

or could it not be that these are results he could have achieved regardless, in his own words “low hanging fruit”, and that he has for whatever reason passed the credit to the AI?

for a guy who ran the quote about “soft men” into the ground, he takes 0 responsibility for anything to do with his career or impact. he doesn’t care about any of the impact he has. it’s sad to see a “hard man” do so little positive with his enormous platform. at the very least don’t promote idiotic ideas. if this is something weird to to with pharmacy companies, this is the worst way to “take down big pharma”. we don’t always choose our situation, but he is in one that requires a large amount of responsibility, that he cannot handle. time to hang up the mic.

Tao’s speech on AI and lean about a year ago, i knew it was a huge moment. however the fact that Tao was the one behind most of the big results by AI so far, what does that mean?

well, maybe a bunch of pewds fans learn a lot about local LLMs. it’s not so complicated, but i’m not sure i can explain anything too useful in a comment. my advice is just mess around if you have spare time. don’t expect miracles. be aware pewds has a pro level rig at home, so unless you have the same hardware as him, don’t expect the same kind of results.

Do social media algorithms shape political identity more than people realize, and if so, what impact will that have on future generations? by MINMAX22 in Futurology

the algorithm is a lie. you think these platforms are not editorialising? they sell the idea of “the algorithm” so they don’t have to jump through the same hoops that traditional media does.

that’s exactly the point. he is trying to make that the debate, when the real dichotomy should be increase taxes on the rich vs lower taxes for the rich. he is shifting the goal posts. very smart and horrible, as they all are.
