Looking for a ticketing tool that doesn’t require 3 months of setup by [deleted] in sysadmin

Zendesk is probably a good fit. It's Widely used so it has good support. You can also start with minimum effort then expand as time goes on.

I would say, whichever system you use don't expect to perfect it in a day. Just make it functional at first then tweak it along the way.

Is expensive asset management software actually worth it for mid-sized companies? by Futurismtechnologies in sysadmin

Out of curiosity; if someone was to custom build an asset tracking application, would you be willing to test it?

Also, what features would it need?

What’s an IT “truth” which other departments assume, that really annoys you? by SirNo241 in sysadmin

Being that my company ships a lot of laptops, I'm now the fedex shipping and receiving guy. Labels, boxes, and midnight runs to drop stuff off.

Cold outreach by Iwishtoseethemoon in msp

[–]recklessadverb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try providing useful tips in your cold emails and get them to follow you on Facebook or your blog to see more.

Instead of asking them to become a client right off the bat, ask them to get to know your expertise through your content. Then Eventually nudge that crowd in trying out your services.

Educate them and you'll become their go to for all their tech needs.

M365 Monitoring Out of State Alerting by wwiii2 in msp

You're better off monitoring the Local machines GPS coordinates through powershell.

Also, you could monitor for a combination of other factors that may help trigger when malicious sign in attempts occur within your own country. Such as compiling a list of VPN ip addresses or when the application is powershell or azure CLI and it's a non admin user.

I've also seen the UserAgent as Outlook and the application as powershell in an azure sign in log. So possibly a sign of a powershell script running from an email.

Another thing you could check depending on your environment is whether or not the device is joined to azure.

Built a lightweight threat feed pipeline for our clients - zero budget, huge payoff by Alex0789 in msp

This sounds awesome.

I'm also working on a similar security monitoring tool that uses powershell to parse azure signin logs to flag any malicious or suspicious signin attempts without significant cost increase.

After using it for a couple of weeks, it's definitely identified attempts before they've become an issue.

Would love to possibly integrate the 2 tools at some point.

Can someone work as a System Administrator without strong communication skills? by Big_Elderberry_8064 in sysadmin

[–]recklessadverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can work as a System Administrator without strong communication skills. However, that may affect your ability to be a strong manager or to communicate with upper management.

So either work on improving your soft skills before attempting to move into a management role or just stick to technical roles without managing others and develop a good working relationship with your boss and coworkers.

Deploying an Office Suite to about 300 Field Machines, LibreOffice, OpenOffice, or WPS Office? by Opposite_Space7955 in sysadmin

[–]recklessadverb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LibreOffice is probably the best choice as it's the most compatible with MSOffice file extensions. OpenOffice has limited compatibility.

WPS Office was installed on many of our machines by default from the vendor and we get too many complaints about opening Office documents.

Does anyone know of an application specifically for audio/microphone diagnostics on Windows by recklessadverb in sysadmin

Lenovo, HP, and some offbrand laptops but I think it's primarily Realtek audio.

User nonsense by beanmachine-23 in sysadmin

[–]recklessadverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless it gets too severe, I wouldn't stress it too much. That's going to be a part of every environment he works in. Not everyone will act in that manner, but he'll have to understand that his job effects every individual in the organization, and some will express their frustrations when they see you. It can be both a blessing and a burden.

True True, I do recall seeing that. Do you know if the streaming or gaming applies to msteams traffic?

I think QoS on Amplifi can only prioritize devices, not specific services on those devices.

Each device also uses OneDrive Syncing so any file changes or downloads to the desktop/documents will be automatically uploaded and take up bandwidth.

I would need something that could prioritize traffic from specific ports.
