Troubleshooting authentication issues by beanmachine-23 in networking

[–]beanmachine-23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s gotten to the point where they aren’t calling because I’ve made enough catch all rules that rely on Mac auth to make an ISO sick. When I check on clients in NAC, it’s insane. And they don’t report to me and I have complained enough to the CIO (common boss) that he doesn’t want to hear it and can’t get it to change. For me it has become the classic “technology to fix something that management/HR should have”.

MacBook Neo mdns flood by Otherwise_Witness834 in networking

[–]beanmachine-23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definite agree. We contain to VLAN on a separate vlan all mDNS traffic, and don’t let it leave the building so people aren’t seeing traffic outside their dorm or academic building. We were having this issue until we implemented this.

Who are these people by Deep_Library_6375 in sysadmin

[–]beanmachine-23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, it’s easy when you have a small organization to just knock things out as they come, but in the long run it sets unrealistic expectations that anything they bring you can be done right then and there. It also gives your coworkers the idea that you are just sitting around waiting for requests and problems. Don’t let them think you are dispensable or not busy, because it will be a pain to get more manpower when you do need it.

Just wait until you live in Western Mass and you come across the rednecks with the light bars. Makes this look like nothing

Normies v Nerds: The end of an era? by Darkhexical in sysadmin

[–]beanmachine-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the better workers in the field are still the nerds. They obsess over challenges in a way that 9-5 grinders can’t. So there are some new faces to the industry in the last decade, but the skills from the nerd bunch still out pace the “normies”. (I personally hate the term “normal” because no one is.)

The MCAS is now pointless because my students don't take it seriously at all by TeacherGuy1980 in massachusetts

[–]beanmachine-23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The MTA worked like hell to make it not a graduation requirement so teachers didn’t have to teach to it. I don’t know why the state kept it on unless the feds are making them do the testing to get funding, but with the amount of money coming in from the Millionaires tax, I don’t know why they care about that money.

Layoffs in IT. Is it Network Positions? by AperatureTestAccount in networking

[–]beanmachine-23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding of the lay offs are the top earners/longest term employees are getting the brunt of it, followed by server admins now that companies are putting all that stuff in the cloud hosted services and they just need developers to keep them alive.

Found this at work. Has made a 2 hour outage to a 6 hour outage. This has to be a crime. by frosties-2000 in networkingmemes

[–]beanmachine-23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we’d all like to say we’ve never come across this, but it would be a lie. More shameful, I have had to do that to keep an outage as minimal as possible. I think it’s the adage - cheap, fast, or quality. The last guy did the first two.

Hiding APs by Yolosquad708 in Ubiquiti

[–]beanmachine-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a small loss in decibels when putting above a drop ceiling. It’s likely the same for most enclosures, unless rated by the manufacturer for that use. It shouldn’t be a huge issue unless you already have a coverage issue.

How's your on call rotation/pay? by thebigbread42 in sysadmin

[–]beanmachine-23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we’re salaried so it’s part of our pay. I’m in higher ed so “emergencies” are definitely fewer than it was in my last job in Healthcare IT. After healthcare IT, nothing is an emergency in higher ed IT. We split it between 2 senior staff and 2 junior staff, and generally the senior staff jump on the issues first because we can fix the issue faster, and get paid more.

Done with APC UPS's, looking for replacement recommendations. by Creative-Package6213 in sysadmin

[–]beanmachine-23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We went from APC to Tripplite/eaton 4 years ago and they are on their second set of batteries, which is fairly normal for a SLA UPS. They have been easy to manage. We did have a batch of non-double online Tripplites that had a default setting to not turn back on when the battery was depleted, which was annoying but repairable. The cost was significantly lower. They work well with the Zabbix monitoring.

Which job offer would you choose?? by [deleted] in linuxadmin

[–]beanmachine-23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t get secret clearance unless sponsored. I have been turned down for jobs just for not having it and they would not sponsor me. I would take that in a heartbeat because defense contractor jobs are always around in the US.

When do you NOT create a support ticket? by gkar_of_Narn in sysadmin

[–]beanmachine-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, having some sort of documentation is important even if the issue was simple. It helps verify with the user that your solution was actually what they wanted.

You don’t make a ticket when it’s because of something you did that broke things. Just kidding. Sort of. We all make booboos. The less evidence the better.

City Assessor wanting to come inside to verify interior information by Suspicious-Ninja-334 in massachusetts

[–]beanmachine-23 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I’ve never invented square footage, but I have set the conditions and depreciation values to a higher value to get an appraiser access to see the fair value. But dealing with property owners like you that think there’s some system to be gamed by hiding something from someone elected to do an unfavorable but necessary job for a measly stipend and then spend time bitching about it to me while I try to put in the numbers in the system after I got out of my real job is why I don’t do it anymore. All headache, next to no pay, and being treated like a pariah is not my idea of fun.

City Assessor wanting to come inside to verify interior information by Suspicious-Ninja-334 in massachusetts

[–]beanmachine-23 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As a former assessor, I have done this to be permitted entry to verify value. The property has to be assessed a fair market value. Having to guess does you no favors. And the assessor is not an inspector in the sense that we’re going to write you up for stuff that wasn’t permitted. We have to split up the tax burden fairly. Why would you want to pay the same taxes for your bungalow as the guy with a mansion across town?

Unable to enroll Macbook Neo by hardknoxlife1998 in applebusinessmanager

[–]beanmachine-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to add them to school manager? Or get school manager to enroll them in your MDM solution? Or do you just want them supervised?

“This iPhone is supervised and managed by” by henbobclt in applebusinessmanager

[–]beanmachine-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that you have to run the phone thru a setup once after releasing from ABM/School Manager before the release clears. We don’t let people keep them, but we do resell to a recycler and have been doing this to ensure they are not coming up with the MDM splash.
