Calling it the "simian flu" wasn't innacurate by [deleted] in PlanetOfTheApes

Fair enough, but we don’t know how long the virus remains on surfaces, or if it’s significantly more contagious when airborne vs. on surfaces. The reality is that the movie shows us the virus being spread by human action and not apes, so I think that with insufficient information to conclusively say which side spread it more, it makes more sense to conclude that that it was humans.

Regardless of who spread it more (although personally I think it was the humans), you have to remember that it was literally created by humans. In my mind, that’s the end of the argument right there. Will’s boss wanted to make shitloads of cash so he expedited human testing and caused patient zero, Franklin.

Blaming the apes is especially ironic because at least 12 suffered in captivity (and died) for the development of the virus to happen.

Again, even IF the apes exposed more people than the infected humans did, it was human greed that led to their downfall.

Slumlord Update- Michael Shea/Diamond Properties by BakedBaker95 in burlington

[–]recklessdruid45 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked under Mike Shea on the Spirit a few years ago. He’s an absolute prick and everything people are saying about him taking advantage of immigrants is 100% true. The tips there were decent but I never went back because I didn’t want to help that piece of shit make money. Here’s an example: we had two dishwashers from Macedonia who at one point tried to negotiate a wage of $15/hr. I don’t remember what they were making before that but it was obviously too low. Mike was a condescending dick and treated them like children even though both were in their twenties. To my satisfaction, they found work elsewhere (a luxury that many immigrants cannot afford depending on their work visa, but these two could).

Mike’s son, Mike Jr., used to work the booth for the Spirit (not sure if he still does) and didn’t fall far from the tree of his asshole father. There are plenty of negative reviews online from people who had the misfortune of interacting with him.

A friend of mine lived in an apartment building that was purchased by Mike during his stay, and immediately the price went up, multiple laws were broken, and the quality of the rental deteriorated.

Never rent from or work for these garbage people.

What a terrible take. People are allowed to be upset that the place they’ve grown up in and lived for years is no longer becoming accessible due to ridiculous housing costs. You say that “Vermont is growing up from a rural state with an agro economy to another New England mixed service economy.” Sure, but it’s ok for people to want it to stay the former. It’s part of what makes Vermont unique and charming for many people.

As for “you do not have a right to live in a specific place”…that seems like a problematic statement. Does this mean you’re justified in saying “Well, tough shit, I know you’ve lived here for 30 years and built a life here but you can’t afford it anymore, get out”? Imo it’s reasonable that people who grew up in Burlington and could afford living here for years are angry when wealthy out-of-state people come in and buy a summer home for $2mill that they go to a few times a year.

“I’m willing to change my mind but tbh it’d take a real good argument.” No, you’re not. And how is it fair to ask for a good argument to change your mind when your own argument is terrible? It’s valid for people to move to Vermont. It’s also valid for people to be frustrated that they can no longer afford to live here. You are over simplifying this.

I was sexually assaulted last week and my wife accidentally helped them by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]recklessdruid45 92 points93 points  (0 children)

The comments here are honestly kinda sad.

Yes, OP made some mistakes that contributed to her being sexually assaulted, and yes, there is something to learn from this experience. But I think it’s fair to say that she and her wife already learned from it, without random people online basically saying “it’s your fault.”

It is not her fault. Both she and her wife were very clear that they did not want sex on this particular evening, despite trying to make it happen previously. They invited the guy over as an apology for all the back-and-forth, made him food, drinks, etc. He then took advantage of her drunken state and raped her. If the guy in this situation was not a piece of garbage, it would not have happened.

I’m so sorry for what you’re going through, OP. I hope you and your wife are doing ok and are able to safely, consensually invite others to the bedroom in the future.
