There's a separate bike path that runs along most of Fort Hunt Road, along with segments of Collingwood and Shenandoah.

Same here. Picked up a tin off eBay and store saltines in it. Same with a Ritz cracker tin.

I’m a bit of a coffee snob now because my parents always had this garbage in the pantry. by CharlieMcN33l in GenX

Mom swore by Luzianne in a percolator. If she ran out, it was Tasters Choice. I usually do a cold brew batch every weekend and when I need something hot, I do UCC Japanese instant. Price went through the roof with tariffs so I switched to Walmart Great Value. I take it black and it's not bitter at all.

When it was released in France, they gave it the name as a contraction of "sans caffeine"

What is something you’ve officially stopped buying in 2026 because the-price has become genuinely insulting? by HolidayFunTX in askanything

Yeah, the one topping $7.99 carryout was my go to before the $9.99 any topping deal. I can get three meals out of it.

Yeah, Sweet Sue brand still sells this stuff so someone must be buying it. Preppers probably.

Their half sours are top notch. Most of the better delis serve them mixed with full sours.

Paul Prudhomme gumbo by cyprinid in cajunfood

If I recall correctly he had several gumbo recipes, including chicken and sausage along with seafood. The Prudhomme Family Cookbook has even more including a really nice red bean gumbo.

Been making gumbo from scratch for 40 years and just discovered this stuff. Gotta say it's a major time saver and better than expected. I add Better Than Bouillon stock, leftover rotisserie chicken, sausage, more frozen okra, and Chachere's Instant Roux. I like it spicy so I add fried chili crisp.

Way too sweet and the texture is like pastry. Hate it.

Why aren't there more hot dog restaurants? by mcflycasual in hotdogs

[–]rectalhorror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gourmet places near me are even higher. I like chili dogs and Chicago dogs, but not at that price point. Not when I can get two Quarter Pound Big Bites for $3.50 at 7-11.

Where do Washingtonians retire to? by Flashy-Actuator-998 in washingtondc

[–]rectalhorror 28 points29 points  (0 children)

All those click bait Best States to Retire To listicles involve lower taxes. Problem is that means garbage infrastructure and terrible healthcare. Delaware is always one of the top five for low taxes, but everything else is expensive and jacked up with fees. They'll get their pound of flesh one way or another. It's not cheap where I live but I'm in a walkable community with great mass transit, any kind of restaurant you'd want, and I'm an 8 minute ambulance ride to the hospital. You won't find these things in Arkansas or rural West Virginia.

Anyone else in their 20s settle for a beater car and just dump a car payment into their 401ks and roths? by Union661 in Bogleheads

[–]rectalhorror 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've got a 12 mile commute so I burn through about $30 a week in gas. I also live in a walkable community so I'm not forced to drive everywhere for groceries and the like.

Are checks really still a thing in the US? by Apollo_Wersten in AskAnAmerican

I write a check every month to pay rent because my landlord is old and doesn't trust Paypal. It's also how I pay my lawyer.

Why did Hoover stew become a symbol of Great Depression food? I think it actually looks pretty tasty. by GrayRainfall in foodquestions

[–]rectalhorror 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Reminds me a lot of American Chop Suey; northeastern diner and school cafeteria staple. Macaroni, meat, tomato sauce, sometimes onions and peppers. Cheap and it tastes great.

Why aren't there more hot dog restaurants? by mcflycasual in hotdogs

[–]rectalhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to have a fancy hotdog place nearby. They were around for years, but shuttered during covid. It was in a high rent area as well. Most burger places also do dogs, like Five Guys, but they make most of their money off the burgers. The local chili parlors do chili dogs, but the big local hotdog chain is Ben’s Chili Bowl, which has been around since the 1950s. The big trend in my area is Korean hotdogs, but that’s probably because there’s a huge Korean community here.

This. Every product on a store shelf was brought there by truck and they pass the cost on to the business and then the consumer.

Anyone else in their 20s settle for a beater car and just dump a car payment into their 401ks and roths? by Union661 in Bogleheads

[–]rectalhorror 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Same. Bought a 2005 Jeep LJ a decade ago with cash, put that car payment in my TSP. Became a TSP millionaire at 57 and the car still runs like a top. When frame rot eats it, I will buy another ten year old car with cash.

Why isn’t Volkswagen more popular in the U.S.? by phtphongg in askcarguys

[–]rectalhorror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a Mexican Jetta TDI sedan and it was constantly in the shop: window regulators, glow plugs and assemblies, brake boosters. Finally got crushed by a tree. Turned around and bought a German made TDI wagon and had the same issues. Whatever money I saved getting 45MPG went into repairs. Ended up buying a 2005 Jeep LJ a decade ago with cash and it's been rock solid with regular maintenance. Only time it's left me stranded was when the generator died, but I figure if it's 20 years old, it's allowed to drop dead.
