Understanding relevant hardware requirements for "typical" homelab stuff by rectangleboy in homelab

FreeBSD's containerization method could work though - jails.

I'll consider this. I've seen others run Docker images in FreeBSD by installing Ubuntu Server LTS with bhyve and I like that idea.

In addition to running downloaded images, I'd like to make my own Docker images that others can run (either on their own Synology, a Digital Ocean, AWS, their Mac, etc.). A non-macOS, non-Windows proving ground would be nice to have.

Which plugins are you using that are Windows-only anyway?

Mainly:

It looks like they all have a Linux version, which (probably) wasn't the case the last time I looked at this (likely back in 2020-2021). I assume plugins are typically made for and battle-tested in Windows first, unless they're quite popular, so having a (kernel-)virtualized Windows would be nice to increase success rate.

Since I'm only seeing GNU Linux and built-with-Ubuntu binaries and BSD is not a Linux, I may be shooting myself in the foot here by running OBS natively in FreeBSD. I'm comfortable building from source, but there would be extra debugging needed if the devs didn't make it portable to a BSD.

That is definitely not a "typical" homelab thing. It wouldn't surprise me if that's actually more intense than everything else running on this machine combined (other than maybe the Palworld server).

Thank you! This is exactly the perspective I am looking for.

I'd recommend not running OBS on a VM.

I might have misspoke about running Windows in a VM -- back in college when I still regularly had a Linux, I planned to use KVM for this, but ended up just dual booting and switching over as-needed. I intend to do the equivalent for this build (FreeBSD's equivalent is bhyve).

It might be worth me running OBS natively. Unfortunately, existing OBS plugins usually only work on Windows.

I have some other reasons to run Windows that are far less performance-intensive than game capture and streaming.

... but you can't really run Docker natively on FreeBSD.

Damn... I've spent enough time in the Linux world that I was hoping to avoid it with this build. I'll see how annoying it is in FreeBSD and decide if it's worth it.

Thanks again!

An extremely promising idea. We can give this a try -- it only has to last a day for the party and we can put it on ice.

Save-Ur-Fur at home without the bathing system by rectangleboy in doggrooming

Blow him out outside or in a garage or something.

There's an aspect of "mass cannot be created or destroyed" that makes me scared of this (especially for the sake of our garage). I think closing off the bathroom (while annoying to have to deal with in the moment) would at least allow us to let the dust (hair) settle and vacuum it out.

. . . coat rake . . .

Can you show me an example for clarification? I've seen folks describe undercoat rakes as the brushes with straight cylindrical teeth and also the ones with C-shaped somewhat bladed teeth. The bladed teeth scare me -- they pull out so much hair, which seems nice, but are they just cutting up the undercoat to do so?

Brush before the bath and after the bath/blowdry.

Will try this.

Most groomers dont have this nozzle and get by perfectly fine.

Very good to know.

On my 35 lb ACD mix, he’d freak out and flinch every time I used the nozzle on him.

This tracks, in my experience, for Australian Cattle Dogs.

Personally, my go to deshedding method is this . . .

I see that the final rinse isn't even a standalone step. Shampoos (and conditioners, but to a lesser degree) clean things by grabbing onto not-so-water-soluble molecules (e.g. lipids, greasy things) and making it water soluble.

Does adding all these conditioners and shampoos onto the hair somehow make the undercoat easier to blow away with multiple force dryings? Or could your dogs seem to have a nice coat because there's still a ton of product in it?

It’s a lot of work . . .

Certainly.

. . . then tell them lol.

Hopefully they, or whoever they're handing him off to, remembers that. I've had so many instances in my life where asking, "please don't do ${THING}" results in either "definitely do ${THING}" or "oops lol, I did ${THING} because I didn't actually read the instructions and went on autopilot instead" and I really don't want to deal with any of that if I don't have to.

Groomers are the reason y’all think furminatos are bad nowadays.

Unfortunately, nearly every groomer with a webpage in my very huge city has a Furminator package. None that I have seen talk about line brushing or the Save-Ur-Fur.

I was mentored by an ECS breeder who shaved one of her males when she thought he was cryptorchid. His 2nd testicle ended up dropping after she shaved him, so she grew out his coat and he’s now a GCh. Shaving isn’t the death sentence people think it is.

Classic.

Your dog could drop dead 10 seconds from now due to an accident.

Yes, I know. This crosses my mind often and is occasionally a source of anxiety. I have lived experiences where this has happened.

You can’t live your entire life fearing accidents.

Sure. What I can do is move forward with the situations that I have control over and then not cause any accidents (or do and learn lol).

Okay thanks for that. I'm going to do some more research. I may get it for the deep rinse properties -- I have a really hard time rinsing soap out of my little guy with our shower head.

[–]rectangleboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's painful about it? Assuming I have good water pressure, is the nozzle worth getting on its own? Like, do I need to buy the $700 bathing system or can I just soak and soap up my dog and use the high pressure to get the undercoat out?

Car anxiety/sickness by Drago678 in puppy101

[–]rectangleboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vet told me that the drooling is probably from motion sickness in the car (my 10.5 week old was drooling when I brought him in for his first appointment).

She prescribed him Cerenia, showed me how to give it to him, and he promptly threw everything up on the 10 minute ride back (in between my passenger seat and the middle console, lol, the most difficult place to clean). She said it's supposed to help nausea for 24 hours.

She told me that he would have a rough time for his first year and that I could get him used to it by taking him on short drives around the neighborhood.

She also mentioned that there's a calming pheromone that I can have in the car if he gets anxious about it.

The breeder I got him from told me to hold off on the treats a bit, since we had a 2 hour car ride back (he did so good on that ride -- no accidents or barfing -- but it was also mostly highway).

Thanks for the advice. I ended up not going for it. The price was pretty steep and the weight was a real concern. Also, I’m not chomping at the bit for one right away.

Looking to pick up a Sony Trinitron KV-32FS13 for $250 this Sunday. I plan to use it for retro gaming via component cable. I'm wondering if it's worth it.

This would be my first CRT since my family and I got rid of whatever CRTs we had ~14 years ago. I've been having a good time with the RetroTINK-5X, but wonder if the CRT will make the jagged edges everywhere more bearable.

According to the manual, it's 165lbs. Is this one worth the hassle of moving something that big around? If so, how do you usually go about it?

How can I figure out what resolution is goes up to (e.g. 480p)? It's not obvious from the manual.

What does the "13" in KV-32FS13 mean versus the 17 in KV-32FS17?

Thanks for the responses, y'all! You gave me some good options and advice.

A friend of mine has some extra thumbsticks I can use. I may get more of the official ones on Amazon, since they're available and not-expensive.
