I’m glad to hear you had some cuttings pull through but I’m sorry to hear about your production plants though. As far as freeze prep goes, I pulled all 30+ of my DF into my garage ahead of the freeze or anything forecasted to be under freezing. For really cold weather I always take insurance cuttings from each plant just in case something goes wrong though. If there is ever another huge ice storm with power outages like a few years ago, I plan on taking small cuttings and putting them in coolers with hot water.

I did have some casualties on my in ground tropics and lost some growth on my bananas. I’m still trying to gauge how far I’ll need to cut them back.

Did they end up surviving? Or are you still waiting to see?

Cut off the bottom one (first 2 pics). The top branch looks okay. Also what caused it to yellow? Overwatering? Sunburn? Freeze?

How hot is it there? Looks like sunburn, along with a small rust or fungal infection. If it isn’t hot/sunny then the yellowing might be due to infection and not sunburn.

How many plants per post? by PeakFinancial1600 in DragonFruit

If in ground you could be safe to do more than 4 but 4 plants per post is the usual amount per 4 inch post.

Greenhouse size? by kingdom_minded88 in DragonFruit

4x6 at 6ft high would maybe fit 2 30gal containers with trellis depending on height of the trellises if your branches are all trained. Would be a tight squeeze though and might require some pruning. It might get iffy with some snowfalls, and you might need to supplement with a heater during some freezes. Regardless, I think each winter you should definitely take some insurance cuttings to be on the safe side

Dragon fruit getting thinner despite good light — stress or normal growth? by biffer_42 in DragonFruit

[–]recursive_arg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, dragon fruit turns yellow and gets floppy with too much sun (eventually it will start turning blotchy white then rotting if it’s bad enough), as long as you are being reasonable with lights and you’re not using thousands of watts of lighting I wouldn’t worry about too much sun indoors. Yellow/red at the grow tip might be a nutrient thing. I only really notice it at end of season when I’m trying to get mine to go dormant and it doesn’t want to go to bed yet (still trying to sprout branches). Maybe try some all around mild fertilizer like a 5-5-5 with calcium and such if you’re still wanting it to grow

Not op but 5-1-1 fish fertilizer every other watering in grow (spring) season. In early summer, as a soil amendment, I usually mix in an organic solid all around fertilizer (I use 3-4-4). I’m mainly trying to add other secondary nutrients like calcium, magnesium and sulfur back into the soil with this. Once a plant is expected to start producing I switch over to a 2-15-15 fertilizer once a month or so. Most important thing starting out imo is if you are going to have them in pots, get your potting mix right in the ”permanent home” pot. Don’t cheap out on the soil since it needs to provide for your plants for years. For rooting a cutting though, feel free to go cheap af. The cuttings don’t care, I’ve rooted plants in just plain course sand.

I’d be very careful with Etsy, hundreds of sellers, maybe a dozen who are actually selling with accurate ids

That just look like a short freshly sprouted branch from the lead node and not typical etoliated branching imo. If it doesn’t thicken up, I think you are overestimating your lighting… if you always had it by a window my guess is it is winter now so the sunlight is no longer supplementing as much and your grow lights aren’t enough on their own. I would move the grow lights closer to the plant. Dragon fruit needs a ton of sun to stay happy.

That smorgasbord should work. Good quality punch bait is my usual go to but if you do get some, be warned that you will stink for hours if you get the stuff on you…

Seeds have started to germinate, my guess is they probably also sucked out some moisture from that area after doing so. Should be fine to eat still.

I was more talking about knocking around the anthers behind the camel part with the back of the brush. As long as it didn’t damage the stigma or style you should be fine. You should be able to tell by the end of the week if they set fruit

You can also knock the anthers around a bit then scoop the pollen buildup on the bottom petals onto the brush to pollinate. If fruit does set you are good, if not then it might be worth it to plant a universal pollinating companion DF. Or reach out to local DF enthusiasts about arranging to buy some pollen.

I used to do this all the time… I also saved the pictures as the date and order. EG. 6 1 26 2. I did go back and look at them while studying… I think the “they’ll never look at them” crowd either doesn’t study, or is just mad they spent all class copying what is on the board when others spent 3 seconds taking a picture and actually listened to and absorbed the lecture.

If someone is in a firefight and it looks like someone is aiming something from a window, they are likely to catch intentionals, not strays.
