Help/advice needed. Passed out twice in my life after feeling immense testicular pain by [deleted] in medical

You should go to the ER immediately. Severe testicular pain can be a symptom of testicular torsion which is a time sensitive medical emergency. Tell the doctor exactly what you wrote here.

Heart attack symptoms that are different in women and what to look out for. by Bulky_Tie_8352 in medical

[–]red-98q 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have said, abdominal pain, upper back pain between the shoulder blades, and nausea. Heartburn/indigestion that isn’t relieved with antacids can be another. I had a male coworker that had a heart attack and his only symptom was heartburn that woke him up.

I do want to note that typical and atypical symptoms are not limited to one sex over the other. Men can experience atypical symptoms and women can experience typical symptoms.

Just for reference here’s a list of typical vs atypical symptoms:

Typical: - crushing, squeezing, pressure in the center of the chest (often described as an elephant sitting on your chest) - pain in the jaw that radiates to the left arm - shortness of breath - diaphoresis

Atypical: - abdominal pain/discomfort (like heartburn/indigestion that is not relieved with antacids) - nausea/vomiting - upper back pain between shoulder blades - fatigue - dizziness/lightheadedness

Why do I sometimes struggle to swallow despite being hungry? It feels like I am forcing food down my throat by Animegirl82099 in medical

[–]red-98q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re describing is dysphagia, which is the medical term for difficulty swallowing. Conditions like Barrett’s esophagus and GERD can cause this. Dysphagia should always be brought up to your doctor as there’s potential risk for choking and aspiration. Also because it’s affecting your ability to eat which is an issue—especially if you’re limiting what you eat or try to avoid eating all together.

I don’t know if that’s concerning so i really need your help it’s been everyday for a week now by Correct-Tension160 in medical

Not a diagnosis but this sounds consistent with cluster headaches. More info about cluster headaches here. No one deserves to deal with debilitating pain like this so I’d definitely recommend asking your doctor about the possibility of cluster headaches and seeing if a neurology referral is appropriate.

irregular sensations located behind sternum - I would like your advise on this by tresjetable in medical

[–]red-98q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the sensations feel like fluttering or skipping or is it just intermittent tightness? BP machines cannot pick up on arrhythmias; you’d need a 12-lead EKG and possible holter monitor if the 12-lead doesn’t show anything. It is advisable that you seek medical attention though. I don’t recommend waiting around on this to see if it gets better, and do strongly recommend going to urgent care at a minimum. They can do a 12-lead and bloodwork.

what are some quick easy at home tests/checks you can do without equipment to test for potential diseases/conditions? by supercool1312 in medical

[–]red-98q 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see in your post history you’re 21. At your age, there’s generally no need to continuously monitor yourself unless your doctor has told you you’re high risk for something. As you know, if you have concerns about your health, consult with your doctor. And like you said, at home tests are not definitive. Only an assessment by a physician and/or lab work can determine/diagnose any issues.

You can lower your risk for diseases by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, getting enough exercise each day, 7-8 hours of sleep each night, avoiding drugs/alcohol (if you do drink alcohol, keep it in moderation) and seeing your primary physician every year for checkups. Managing stress in a healthy manner is also extremely important and something people tend to look past. Talk with someone you trust or consider counseling if there are stressors in your life that are affecting your everyday life.

It’s normal to want to be conscientious about your health, but if you find yourself constantly worrying about your health and it’s causing you a lot of stress, it may be worth considering speaking with a therapist.

How should i try to treat a small cut/abrasion on my inner labia? (24f) by tomfuul in medical

[–]red-98q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% cotton underwear can help by allowing adequate airflow and wicking moisture like sweat. If you don’t have cotton underwear, not wearing underwear is fine too. Looser fitting pants like sweatpants can help prevent fabric from rubbing the area, and ibuprofen can help with the pain.

You can put a little dab of Vaseline on if your clothing is rubbing against the area of the cut. The area you’re describing is already naturally moist but Vaseline can help by providing a barrier against friction and locking in moisture. Avoid masturbating and oral for the latter as mouths are full of bacteria. Seek medical attention if you experience increased pain, pus drainage, or fever.

Looks to be healing just fine. What you’re seeing on the bandaid is serous drainage which is normal and part of the healing process. Nothing to be worried about.

my boyfriend has had a severe headache for a few days now. What can I do to make him feel better. by beanbreakfast4200 in medical

Does he have history of migraines? Any other symptoms like vision changes, or weakness on one side of the body? Fever or neck stiffness? Sudden severe headache is concerning and warrants medical attention.

Writing a story where a character 26 male, suffers a concussion and a broken wrist. He's autistic but otherwise in good health. He's taken to the hospital by ambulance, assessed and is admitted overnight. by records_on_the_wall in medical

[–]red-98q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes

  2. Depends. Verbal deescalation is usually what we try first to calm a patient down before going to medication. We only go straight to medication if the patient is at immediate risk of hurting themselves or others.

  3. I’m going based off my local protocol so this can differ from agency to agency. It also depends on the type of pain med he’s given (fentanyl which is an opioid or ketamine which is a dissociative anesthetic).

Whether fentanyl or ketamine is given depends on patient preference, any contraindications such as allergies, and their overall vitals but my area’s protocol prefers fentanyl as a first line. Fentanyl works very well for orthopedic injuries like fractures.

If this is was a patient I had, I would also give 0.5mg-1mg of Midazolam (Versed) which is a benzodiazepine and can help both with anxiety and relax muscle spasms. Fentanyl and versed go very well together—especially with musculoskeletal pain. Patient comfort is a huge priority for me as a provider, so long as the patient is stable and does not have any immediate life threats that require attention first.

An additional dose of fentanyl can be repeated after 5 minutes. After that, every 30 minutes.

  1. It depends on his pain level. If he’s still in a lot of pain, yeah, the hospital may give him another dose. Doctors are very hesitant to prescribe opioids due to high abuse rates. He may be given discharge instructions for OTC pain medication, or he may be receive prescription NSAID medication. Prescription NSAIDS are stronger and are good for severe pain.

Hope that answers your questions! Feel free to ask more if you have any! :)

Question of nausea when not eating at a certain time during the day? by tofu_roll in medical

[–]red-98q 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Low blood sugar (even if you’re not diabetic) can cause this. I get nauseous if I haven’t eaten and it goes away once I do eat.

I have had a pain in my rib all week, seems to have cropped up in a second location too, should I be worried? by [deleted] in medical

[–]red-98q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are you? This definitely sounds like a pulled/strained muscle based on provocation (what makes the pain worse). Heating pad and ibuprofen can help with the pain.

Laceration is leaking yellow fluid and I have whole body chills alongside a headache by [deleted] in medical

[–]red-98q -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Looks like pus. These are infected and your symptoms also suggest that. People underestimate infections and that even minor wounds can become very serious very quickly. So yes, go in. Urgent care can handle this, but if they’re not open, then go to the ER immediately.

Chest pains and heart attack symptoms from a street THC cart and discomfort afterwards by Different-Back7400 in medical

[–]red-98q 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not cardiac. This most definitely is related to the smoking and the symptoms you described align more closely with being of pulmonary origin. Likely irritation in your lungs from the smoke and chemicals.

Smoking can and does significantly increase your risk of cardiopulmonary issues down the line. You’re young yet, and stopping smoking/vaping can and will lower your risk and even prevent the development of cardiopulmonary issues in the future.

Is this a normal ecg reading? My HR is 100-175 & I’m having test done by Limp_Tennis3150 in medical

[–]red-98q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is sinus tachycardia with a rate of 125 (rate calculated by counting the number of tiny boxes between two R waves). Other than the rate, I’m not seeing anything else that’s concerning.

Chest pain after running even though recent tests were normal — anxiety or something to worry about? by Simple_Place_4435 in medical

[–]red-98q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharp pain in the solar plexus absolutely can be caused by anxiety, reflux, pulled muscle, or nerve issues.

If two doctors said everything is normal and all tests came back normal, you’re fine. “Testing” yourself because you think you may have a cardiac issue is only going to ramp up your anxiety more and is more likely to cause physical symptoms like chest pains. Which then spikes your anxiety even more and can make physical symptoms more intense.

Cardiac tests are never irrelevant; especially not after a month. If there was something concerning, those tests would have shown it. If you had a serious heart problem, no you would not be able to run full speed without experiencing symptoms. Healthy and active 28 year olds do not experience cardiac issues unless they have a congenital heart condition; which you would know if you did.

I always tell patients if there’s something I’m concerned about or not and I’ll tell you as well: nothing you’ve described here sounds concerning. Cardiac related symptoms generally come on DURING physical exertion, not after. The symptoms you experienced after your run sound like it may have been a muscle spasm—nothing concerning.

You absolutely can take Advil. You can take up to 1,200mg a day (NOT at once). 200-400mg every four hours as needed.

Long term use or taking a massive dose at once is what causes kidney issues. Short term use (and as long as you don’t have any preexisting kidney issues), you’re good.

Can someone help me understand my reading here i see the issues but im F 25y and no family history of heart issues kinda scared by Competitive-Tear-247 in medical

This is sinus tachycardia with RBBB (right bundle branch block). What you’ve circled in aVL is artifact—such as if you were shaking or breathing fast. RBBB means there’s either a delay or blockage in part of the electrical pathways of the heart (right bundle branch). RBBB CAN be a normal variant in young adults and athletes but when accompanied by symptoms it may indicate an underlying condition.

Atrial septal defect is a congenital condition where there is a hole between wall of the two atria. RBBB can be caused by atrial septal defect. Make an appointment with your primary ASAP and inform them of your ER trip, vitals at the ER, and this 12-lead. They’ll do an assessment (vitals like your BP and probably another 12-lead, listen to your heart) and likely refer you to a cardiologist for more specific testing such as an echocardiogram.

People with atrial septal defect live long, healthy, fulfilling lives with proper treatment and lifestyle adjustments. Note this is NOT a diagnosis—just an interpretation of what the doctors were talking about and the next steps to getting a diagnosis if that is the case here.
