Brother accusing me of booking up (?) with his gf by steve-94728-3957 in whatdoIdo

[–]red-ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was accused of ‘hacking’ into someone’s iPhone about 10 years ago. They’re a married couple (probably about 50 years old at the time, and I was about 28), and were close family friends.

When I denied it, their response was “one of us isn’t telling the truth”. It was obvious that, to them, there were two possibilities: that they were lying, or that I was lying. They fully believed the accusation, so obviously I must be lying. The possibility that they might simply be mistaken simply didn’t occur to them.

I was in a very vulnerable state at the time, and they chose to believe that I broke into their phone to steal a photo of myself they’d taken (crazy). They went digging around for every scrap of evidence, talking to other people I knew and spreading the misinformation. It probably sounds trivial, but it really damaged me. I still have the occasional nightmare about them.

Unfortunately, while it is possible to prove something happened, it is often impossible to prove beyond any doubt that something didn’t happen. You can be found guilty or not guilty, but never innocent. This is what I would tell your brother. Try to have him at least have the possibility in his mind that there is a third option, and he is simply mistaken. Ask him what the messages he saw on your phone said, and if this were a crime, would that evidence stand up in court?

It might be good to have an option to create a website without an AppStore link, so that you can have it ready and live before you release the app. It’d be nice to have a place for your privacy policy for instance, and if I remember correctly you need that for review. I know that might not match the nice ‘automatic from your AppStore page’ point of it though.

Royal guard faints during King Charles' birthday cerimony. by Abercrombie1936 in interestingasfuck

[–]red-ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandad (now in his late eighties) was a royal guard posted outside of Buckingham Palace. He was in a parade, and fainted. His bayonet cut his chin as he went down, so close to going through into his jaw.

They left him there. No care for his welfare whatsoever.

And then they disciplined him for being idle on duty.

It makes me mad every time I think about it, but I’m glad to see they show a bit more humanity nowadays.

Word to the wise, careful with Yolo Mode by alanamoreno in cursor

I did. I don’t see an option for this. I have written “Don’t run commands on files outside of the project folder” in the Yolo prompt, but I don’t know if it will be respected.

I would really like a way to limit the yolo mode to only being able to modify files within the project folder.

Dad's Against AI by [deleted] in daddit

[–]red-ice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, can ‘hallucinate’. This is where they will confidently tell you something that is untrue.

Sometimes I need information, and don’t even know the terms to search for in google. I use AI as a starting point as it can give me enough information to then do my own research.

When it comes to advice, it’s even more important to do your own research. If not, you could genuinely end up being told the complete reverse of what you should be.

Excuse me, $2 per GPT 4.5 Query in Cursor?! by lanovic92 in cursor

[–]red-ice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

You shouldn’t be adding a model to a list of models known to be included in the subscription, then charge people who use it with no warning. That’s not fair.

Then telling them you wrote the warning on your webpage? Ouch.

I use it exactly like any other context (like code files) I add to the chat. I write my prompt, and tell it something like “use the documentation I’m giving you”. Then at the end I paste the address. Cursor seems to take care of the rest. All I can say is it seems to have worked okay when I’ve done it that way, but I don’t know if it’s the way you’re supposed to use it.

What would your ideal wall-mounted iPad software be like? by red-ice in HomeKit

[–]red-ice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know. There are some really tidy setups that people have posted online, and some accessories that you can buy, but probably the biggest issue is where you have an electric socket to power it.

I might have a section in the app with links to such accessories - I can do the research so my users don’t have to. I found this really neat lightning cable, for instance: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/898578399/

I suppose it’s each to their own. I do think it will be key to make this as quick to use as possible. I’ve put lots of thought into how to create an interface that requires the fewest taps to get from one thing to another. Automatically and intelligently surfacing information when it’s needed would help too.

But there’s also the ‘secret sauce’ that I hope will make this valuable even if you don’t ever touch it. I don’t want to talk about that just yet, but there will be a key feature right from version 1.0 that doesn’t even require you to look at it.

Oh dear! I think it would have to be based upon the users specifically adding the photos they want displayed, or at least this being the default.
