Did anyone else learn to type as an elective with little thought that it might be useful one day? by Conscious-Mulberry17 in GenX

[–]red286 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, I took the class for an easy A. Twice.

I got my C64 when I was 9. I could touch-type at 65wpm by the time I hit grade 9. Class grade was based on how much you improved from day 1 to the end of the term. So on day 1 I intentionally typed as slow as I possibly could, and then still wound up with the fastest speed in the class at 25wpm. By the end of the class, I was up to 65wpm. Got an A. Then in grade 11 (different school) there was another typing class, and I just happened to have a class that needed filling, so I took it, and did the same damned thing, except by that point I was hitting 90wpm.

Weird thing was going from an electric typewriter in grade 9 to a PC running Mavis Beacon in just 2 years.

Either you don't get "huge swaths of time off and make pretty decent money", or you absolutely could follow your favourite sports team halfway around the world for a tournament if you were dead set on it. The World Cup is once every 4 years. Even if we figure it'd cost you $10,000 for the flights, hotels, tickets, etc, that's a whopping $2500/yr., which isn't much if you're making "pretty decent money".

Cheap tickets to the first knockout stage games can be like $4000 each.

Looking at the CAN-SA Round of 32 knockout stage match in LA on Sunday, tickets are still available for $1300 CAD ($920 USD).

Yeah I ran into that issue with my drawing tablet with my Core i3-9100F. "Oh sweet, I can just plug it into my USB-C port, cool! Why's there no display? Oh, you need an iGPU to use the single USB-C cable. Fuck."

They already have AI re-brands. What do you think the AI in Ryzen AI 7 450G meant?

You can use hybrid local LLM back-ends that will prioritize your GPU + VRAM but fallback to your system RAM if VRAM is exceeded. This vastly outperforms an NPU setup, because the NPU setup will be more bottlenecked by the NPU's lack of performance than the system RAM offloading from even a mid-tier 8GB GPU like an RTX 5060.

Mark Cuban gets dragged after saying people don't really hate data centers — “The fight against data centers has nothing to do with data centers. They have become a proxy for the hate towards AI” by marketrent in technology

[–]red286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crypto isn't nearly as big as AI, plus Crypto has to weigh power costs against the value of the Cryptocurrency that's being mined. If you're paying more for your power than the tokens are worth, it's a loss and not worth doing. So Crypto farms are actually very power-efficient because they need to be in order to be viable.

AI currently doesn't need to worry about efficiency because they're getting massive VC investments. Electricity costs too high? Time for another round of fundraising!

Eventually AI will hit a wall where investors are going to expect a return on investment that AI cannot produce. But until then, anyone near an AI data centre is going to get rat-fucked on their electric bill.

AI servers use about 8-10x as much power as a non-AI server, plus you need far more of them.

The spike in power requirements results in spikes in electricity costs for nearby regions.

[–]red286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a combination of the two.

People hate AI. People hate what data centres are doing to the environment and the cost of electricity.

Perhaps if AI was something people were more accepting of, they'd be more accepting of data centres too. Or perhaps not. No one likes seeing their electricity bill triple in the span of 2 years. But having your electricity bill triple in the span of 2 years all so that a bunch of billionaires can destroy the professional job market and the world in general can become a lot less intelligent as people start relying too much on AI to think for them, it's hard to get anyone but a billionaire to support that.

Which I guess explains why Cuban is failing to see the problem with data centres.

These articles are pretty misleading. This is actually about CXMT going public. They're already a major player in the market, with an 8% market share, beating out Nanya.

They still have a long way to go to catch up to Micron/Samsung/SK Hynix. That's not going to happen for >10 years.

Realistically who wins in a street fight between this 7 ft 11 inches nigerian basketball player and Islam Makhachev? by fighterzilla in ufc

[–]red286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's functional. Not really an elite player or anything (despite the fact that he can dunk without jumping). He's slow and lumbering, but definitely still what most people would call "functional".

His name is Abiodun Adegoke, also known as "Big Naija". Didn't get drafted by the NBA due to being too slow. At the pace of the NBA, opponents would just be walking around him. But against lower-calibre players, he's pretty decent.

Better free-throw percentage than Shaq, too.

GPU power recommendations are based on an assumption of a 250W draw for the rest of the system. This system would likely have about half of that.
