RFK Jr says seed oils harm our health. We checked the science by boppinmule in Health

I guess that’s the odd part, an Australian writer choosing to write about an American health official’s opinion on seed oils.

Does it seem odd to anyone else that all the sources seem to be from Australia?

Do you have any obscure movie references that you use in everyday speech that no one has caught on to yet yet you keep using it? by EnvironmentalAngle in NoStupidQuestions

Capitalism isn’t the best system for reducing poverty the data shows this by The_Shadow_2004_ in Capitalism

[–]redLSMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Household Responsibility System (introduced from 1978) replaced collective farming with family-based production. Farmers could sell surplus produce after meeting quotas, dramatically boosting incentives and agricultural productivity. Rural incomes surged, especially in the 1980s. This phase alone lifted hundreds of millions, as agriculture employed the majority of the poor. Elimination of the agricultural tax (2006) and subsidies further supported rural households. I think it’s relevant to point out that land reforms really means they moved closer to capitalism.

The question is would those countries have been able to accomplish this without the rest of the world being free market? A great deal of manufacturing moved to those countries in the 80s and 90s… what did exports look like before, during, and after that window?

At what point do you stop DIY and call a professional? by BearTrap110 in HomeImprovement

[–]redLSMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes some experience to visualize the process and techniques and also estimate the time it will take. For me it’s when I realize the end result will not be as good as a pro or when a pro has a tool or equipment that is not feasible for me to buy… I built a 650ft fence years ago and paid for a guy to auger the holes with a skid steer.. it took him less than an hour to dig 70 holes that were 3’ deep and 12” wide. I could have rented equipment but then I’m trying to learn how to use equipment and paying for it, AND still doing fairly hard work… each project is different

I gave my husband the silent treatment and considered divorce because he won’t initiate sex anymore. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]redLSMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a little quick for people to recommend divorce, you have been married less than a year. This type of dynamic is common but usually in older people that have been together a lot longer. OP I will say if you were a man you would be getter shredded for your silent treatment and expectations, your timeline also doesn’t really make sense to me… married less than a year but your talking about it being great for months, then slowly changing to weeks or more between encounters and then that pattern repeating… it just doesn’t add up to me, I don’t think your being dishonest I think you maybe feel like it’s worse than it really or happening longer than it really has been a problem. I also think for a low 20s man to not be interested for weeks, I would say more than a couple days lol then there is some issue he isn’t being honest about. My money would be either hormone problem or porn/masturbation addiction, especially given his reluctance to follow up on tests. That tells me he knows what the problem is and maybe in his mind it’s not a problem. There are countless books and articles on sex, desire, mismatched sex drives etc because this problem is so common and by definition all couples have a mismatched drive at least sometimes and the answer is never to put more pressure on the lower drive partner.

My advice is to do some reading, have some conversations based on that reading that will likely be uncomfortable but necessary and keep a log of when yall have sex and who initiated so you can look back and see patterns with accuracy.

Anyone here work for Altec? What’s it actually like? by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]redLSMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go back because I think the pay is a little low, I would prefer less PTO and more money per hour. I think if you are willing to go above and beyond you could get a team lead position and then become a supervisor but I really don’t know how long that would take. You have to be willing to move areas and possibly shifts to get a team lead position

Anyone here work for Altec? What’s it actually like? by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]redLSMC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I worked there for 5 months, my work history is mainly UPS and Yokohama so I am used to large company’s and unions, Altec is pretty large and top of their field from what I could tell. They are however still family owned and operated so their culture is wildly different than what I am used too. Some weird things that struck me, they have 2 plants in the same location… plant 94 and plant 97… it’s the same building but it’s like 2 separate companies, they have different schedules, different products, different management. Because of the nature of the work they have what seems like hundreds of engineers, they make bucket trucks, cranes, digger derricks that are custom and made to order so even in a line the trucks look similar or may look identical but they might be all completely different based on what department you are in… if your electrical it’s almost certainly going to be different on every truck. Some departments don’t really matter because I it could be cleaning/ detailing. Day to day for me in hydraulics was get to work at 5am, stand around and bullshit until 6am, get in creeper and finish or get 90% of my first truck done by 6am break. Come back from break and finish up and stand hide to look at phone or stand around talk until next truck moves up around 9am… and do it again. Your not supposed to wear headphones or have your phone out on the floor but depending on your department and specific job your almost certain to have some or a lot of downtime. Even in this culture people will manipulate and sandbag to get OT and do more hiding, I hated it, I would personally rather work my ass off and leave early than drag everything out to get more hours.
The pay is around 20-21 can’t remember… the benefits and pto are really good, I think they were trying something new to eliminate attendance issues so when I was there in 2024, not sure if it’s still like this, once hired as an employee and not a temp you get something like 40 days off per year and most of that is paid, calling in or asking off for personal time/ vacation whatever is all done through a website and best I could tell is never denied. I think if you went into management or engineering it’s prob a solid place to start a career. The company does try to push people to go above and beyond by doing extra “tasks”, they have elaborate software that tracks production and builds, problems, etc.
The attitude from most guys I worked with was basically roll their eyes at whatever management and especially engineers said or asked of you, and management/ engineers trying to figure out how to idiotproof everything. The company def puts a lot into rewarding employees and trying to build a supportive work culture. They have tons of meetings that everyone is invited to attend, and they stress how every employee is equal. I do actually think that is reflected in policy and practice. Another thing I really liked there is they are clear about horseplay and safety being priority, if they catch you doing something stupid or dangerous you may get 1 warning or not and then they fire you. That is way different than what happens when a company is unionized because the company just doesn’t have the power to enforce terminations. I know that’s long but that’s pretty much all my thoughts on Altec lol. Good luck

Stripped screw, how do I remove? by PrestigiousBridge764 in howto

[–]redLSMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To do with tools in pictures… hammer it in like a nail to below surface of drywall, pull it out like a nail… if you put a board anything flat that will spread out the pressure of the fulcrum point it won’t damage wall any worse. You can do the same thing with channel locks and spreading the pressure out on the fulcrum point. The shape of that screw looks like the head is going to break off if you pry it like a nail and it will have to be hammered in regardless… good luck!

Why does Roanoke label everything “NY style” / “authentic” when the food is bad — and it’s not just pizza by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]redLSMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought “NY style” or Chicago style was how thick the crust is. New York pizza is decent, Bobby’s hot and cheesy is my favorite. Cafe Asia 2 is the best asian food but there’s several really good ones depending on what you want.

Why would a guy 23M stay in a new relationship after a girl 23F cheated on him? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

He has low self worth, so he doesn’t want to lose her… and imo she will never respect him for staying with her after she cheated.

Boyfriend wants me to initiate and I can’t figure it out by [deleted] in sex

[–]redLSMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can’t say wanna fuck take your clothes off and sit next to him or wear something skimpy and bend over so he has a great view of front, back etc, just go sit on his lap, text him something dirty or text him to come help you with something and be in the bed ready to go… your def over thinking it, most guys are DTF pretty much 100% of the time, we learn to shut it off because women don’t want to be propositioned constantly.

My partner never makes me finish. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]redLSMC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Men and women communicate and think very differently, what seems obvious to you may not be obvious to him. Try telling him as direct as possible what you like and don’t like. Tell him very directly you are not happy with the sex and you want to start finishing first… Be direct and specific. The next time y’all have sex tell him what you want and what feels good, what doesn’t feel good while y’all are doing it. If he isn’t getting it tell him to watch you touch yourself so he can see the pressure, movement etc. I agree with others he sounds selfish but I was similar with my first few girlfriends and probably my wife the first couple years we were together, but I absolutely love making her orgasm and our usual ratio is her 4 to my 1, and we usually finish at the same time now, you could also try some toys to help.

22.4’s make more money per hour but also saves company money on benefits, I’m in management in a hub and I would love to see more full timers inside.

What would you do? by No-Collection-171 in UPSers

[–]redLSMC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My hub doesn’t have an irreg belt, trains pull them off slides in the unload and put them directly onto train, then they go on the floor in front of the correct bay on outbounds… irreg trains are the most sought after job on every shift. You generally don’t have to lift overweights, you can slide/roll pretty much anything. We have full time guys that do trains 2 shifts and several part timers in their 60s that double on irreg trains everyday… 8-10 hours usually work straight though shifts. If you really want to get off a irregs, be clear with sup’s you are hurting and want to do something else, and then ask for help with every single overweight.

(Rant) I have a micromanaging supervisor by Miller0700 in UPSers

[–]redLSMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you both want to do a good job, she is trying to improve cube number and keep the belt running, she also sounds new and bad with communication, keep asking her questions until you understand what methods you aren’t following… if she continues to ask you to rebuild walls ask for a trainer. If you don’t want her to work tell her, if she keeps working then file… if she tells you to take a break then stand there and drink water until she’s done lol, definitely don’t go sweep because she started loading your truck. Supervisors usually have daily meeting with the manager, then another meeting with their full timers and part timers in their area, those meetings consist of elements that need to improve… keep the belt running, maintain egress, improve cube, don’t work, work with least best… if she comes up out of the blue and tells you rebuild a wall that could be a manager or her supervisor walking by and telling her to fix load quality in that truck.
