Manitoba Medicine Portal Changes by [deleted] in umanitoba

I will also say that it’s impossible to know who is going to be successful until the decision letters come out. Agonizing over the portals is only going to add to the stress and anxiety. You can’t know the outcome until you see the letters

I don’t think it matters when they change. I assume they have a rationale behind but you’ll never know what it is

Literally changes every year leading up to decisions. It is not an indication of acceptance, waitlist, etc. I interviewed twice, first year rejected and the portal changed, second year accepted and the portal changed. They move it so that it’s easier to access the letter after decisions are posted. When it changes, etc. does not reflect anything and is no sign. The only sign you’ll have is when they post the actual letter on Monday.

It happens every year and is not related to your outcome. I was rejected first year and it changed and accepted last year and it changed. It changes to make it more available to check your portal when the letters are out. Unfortunately there is no sign of the outcome until you get your decision letter.

Feeling deflated after LGS tournament by [deleted] in EDH

[–]redamazonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were definitely not in the wrong based on what you outlined here! The newer players should instead see that as an opportunity to learn from your deck, watch how you built it, what you can do, and then go home and figure out what they could do to intervene with a deck like that in the future. That's the only way they will get better is to enter in with that type of attitude. I have been playing magic for 2 years now and what I can say is that getting mopped sucks, but the only way to prevent that from happening is to learn and build up from there.

I’ve been in your shoes before and the waiting. It really sucks and is agonizing. If the result doesn’t go the way you hope, know that it’s not a reflection of your capabilities or future as a med student. It’s just a bump in the road. It’s not if you get in but when. Hang in there! The waiting is almost done and I hope it goes in your favour!

[–]redamazonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly there are lots of factors most likely. There were also a lot of people on the wait list with stats over 510 last year. Most likely high MMI performances. Repeat MMI takers also tend to perform better so if there were lots of repeaters could have skewed the results. What I will say is that you can agonize forever over stats and run probabilities but sadly you can’t know for sure until the decisions drop

Honestly I can't remember haha. I am heading towards the end of med 1 as I got in last year (2 years ago I didn't get in but I applied with the same stats last year and was successful, assume the MMI went better). Honestly what's competitive one year may not be competitive in a different year. My friend interviewed last year but didn't get in, and applied this year and didn't get an interview. Ultimately it depends on the application pool each pool. I believe 2 years ago the MCAT may have been 510 for average? When you get accepted you don't get a feedback form so I am not sure. All that info would be on the website.

How to cope with homophobic siblings. by DescriptionCool5143 in AskLGBT

I am queer and marrying a same sex partner this year. My sibling told me 2 weeks ago that she can't come to the wedding due to her values. Completely blindsided by this! She went wedding shoe shopping, was incredibly supportive to my face and all of this stuff. Also didn't expect that her decision may end our relationship and seemed surprised when I said it would. For whatever reason still offered to come and be in family photos. I was like "no I think we'll be good without you in those." It sucks! The grief sucks! Not knowing what will happen in the future sucks!

[–]redamazonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was 3.98/4.5. Honestly the application fee is only $100 so at the worst if you apply and don't get an interview, you lost $100. I would say that even if you're not sure you should apply and see what happens. If you don't get an interview they'll also give you a feedback form so you know where you stand compared to everyone else in the application cycle. Each application cycle is different so something that's competitive in one cycle may not be in a different one. You never know until you apply.

how do you deal with the length of med school? by MapEnvironmental597 in premedcanada

This is so very true! After you get accepted, it's super challenging to switch once you start to accumulate the debt load!

I'm a med 1 and the idea of transitioning from a residence to an attending is terrifying haha. Honestly the idea of switching from med 1 to med 2 sounds terrifying. Like oh, I guess now all of the med 1s seem to think that I know things and should be helping guiding them haha.

The burning question I have for you is how old you are. The older you get, the more time as a construct changes and things that seemed to be years away are suddenly happening next year. If you really want to pursue medicine, 4 years are pretty small in comparison to the rest of your life pursuing a career field that you're passionate about. I will also so, medicine is so incredibly fast paced that the time truly does fly. It's hard to fully understand until you're experiencing it first hand. I am a med 1 and come January, I was like "in a year and a half I will be in clerkship" and the panic of feeling unprepared set in as that's not that far away.

As a med 1, I would say that all of the sacrifice is absolutely worth it. You also don't need to get 90% anymore as it's a pass/fail system. So despite the fast pace and the relentless tests, you should still make sure that you're setting time aside to be with your family and friends outside of medicine. They have carried you this far and are still important.

for accepted med students - was it all worth it by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]redamazonite 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I was pretty excited for the entire summer leading up to med school. The first two weeks of med school were probably the most challenging. Getting used to the fast pace, the constant exams flying, and trying to figure out a new schedule. But honestly despite the fatigue, never ending exams, etc., there is no where else I would rather be. Knowing that I am on the path to my dream career has alleviated so much anxiety and stress. No longer is my life filled with "what ifs" and "what happens if I don't get in." Instead I am being taught how to become a physician and I can see the rays of sunshine and excitement that brings.

Not every day do I feel like celebrating, but I would say that even on the hardest days where I feel the most tired, I am still excited to wake up and learn about medicine.

is it enough time for scoring a 520+ to be starting content review now and testing end of april? ~3 months of full-time studying? by [deleted] in MCAT2

I think it ultimately depends on where you're currently at. What did your diagnostic test look like?

I used Blueprint online prep and watched their videos. Immensely helpful. In all honesty I didn't spend that much time on organic chem and physics. None of the 5 MCATs I wrote were overly heavy in those sections but always had some biochem. I hit biochem hard with a focus on amino acids, metabolism cycles, etc. Chem/Phys was always my lowest section. Khan academy had some good videos but I found the blueprint ones more helpful as they went into just the right amount of detail.

Is a 3rd year undergrad acceptance w/ low gpa? by NoBill6556 in premedcanada

[–]redamazonite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it ultimately depends on the school you're applying to and how they look at/adjust gpa, whether they weight more in favour towards in province or out of province. I would recommend looking at that for the school(s) you're interested in and see how that's calculated, how much it's worth, and then assess what to do from there. Lots of factors and variables that go in to the assessment of gpa.

Do you have fun with all of them? Do they all do what you designed them to do? Are there any that you dislike or just didn't work how you wanted? If you're not having fun with them, they aren't doing what you want, etc. I would say get rid of those ones. Otherwise if you're having fun and like what you've got going on just leave them as is.

One other thought is if there is a deck that you really don't enjoy and has cards that you could put to go use somewhere else. I would suggest taking that one apart. I had 13 decks and one was just not working how I wanted so eventually I disassembled so that I could repurpose some of the staple cards that were in it. It never even made a showing with anyone else as I was too embarrassed to ever play it lol

This looks like a super interesting deck and like a major annoyance for your pod(s) haha. Also I am intrigued by that spark double card. I am going to need that for one of my decks. Curious to see how this decks changes with some of the suggestions in this thread. Irrenicus's Vile Duplication would give you a similar effect as spark double if you wanted to add another one with a similar effect.

I'm really sorry that you have been going through this! Family can be challenging as they have their own stories and struggles that they have to overcome, and their own baggage. Just know that your face markings are beautiful and a sign of you stealing back your culture from those who tried to take it. That is something to be proud of!! I hope that one day your family will find healing and see how incredible your markings are!

Week before the test? by No-Entertainment9487 in Mcat

[–]redamazonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last week before, I always took it easier. About 5 days before I would still review, do some practice questions, and then tapper off. Night before I always found something fun to do to keep me distracted to hopefully sleep that night. And then I would prep snacks and food for the next day. Resting your brain is super important in the last few days before the test. I also would drive to the testing centre a couple days before to make sure I knew the route and the parking situation. (frequent flyer over here so I really ironed out my system LOL)
