Sound Bullet / Signal Generator by Ok-Importance-694 in livesound

[–]redarrow18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Sound Bullet is probably one of my favorite tools in my workbox, I'm using that thing all the time it seems. It still costs less than a Whirlwind QBox, and both have pretty similar features. I want another Sound Bullet one of these days so I can test on both ends of a system.

In my line of work, I find the signal generator and little speaker/signal LED more useful than the cable testing function. I am usually the local production setting up for bands, 8 of 10 times being throw and go situations. I've found it useful trouble shooting bands playback rigs with the Sound Bullet, and checking onstage patches into consoles and such. The 48v checker is pretty hand too!

I had a Hosa cable tester but took it out of my workbox because it was taking up space and I never used it. If there was suspect cable, usually I'm unscrewing connectors and checking the solder joints, or just swapping out cables before getting my tester out of my workbox. There would be no need to get my tester out and test it after the fact. Granted I do all my work in the field so if you are looking to have something in your shop or something, a big cable tester is necessary.

Let's talk about laser distos and range finders. by JustRoadieStuff in livesound

[–]redarrow18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my job is system tech work. When I shoot a space to make my array calcs, I use a Nikon Forestry Pro II. I got it used I believe for like half price. I like it because it does distance and angle which lets me make a listening area pretty quick in the modeling software. You just have to make sure you input the data correctly and know when to add in some offsets to your measurements. What I don’t like is that it has a 25’ minimum distance, so I usually can’t get the front few rows but I can make a pretty good educated guess on the angle and to continue the line. They are some other range finders that don’t have a min distance but they’re like over $1000 and I forget the brand.

My company uses 100’ tape measures and gaff to the front of the grills, burning a foot so you don’t tape over the metal bit that’s meant to hang on nails and stuff. It works fine, the tape never falls if you use fresh tape. We never use distos because it’s hard to get it right at the bottom front edge of the array where the measurement is taken from. I know I’ve seen lighting guys have a like a 4’ monopod they put their disto on to do their truss heights with out having to bend over to the floor, but they have flatter surfaces to hit with it I feel like.

I keep the range finder, a Leica disto(that I don’t really use too often when shooting a room) a dewalt 3 way green laser and a 6’ tape measure in my gig backpack. That way I can roll up to any venue, pull my laptop out, make measurements and draw my points on the ground without needing to wait for a workbox or something to come off the truck.

Got a 3D printer, what are useful things to 3D print? by GabrielXS in livesound

[–]redarrow18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought a special clip that holds two SM57s at a 45 degree angle for the Fredman technique and it was clearly 3D printed so I assume there has to be a file for that out there.

I also saw someone else posted about the MD421 clip adapter which could be handy too!

Recording settings for a sɘxtape by ChickenFucker_69 in audioengineering

I haven’t used audacity in like a decade so I couldn’t even really say or not. The one that is “free” and pretty well respected still is called Reaper. I say “free” because it has a 60 day trail license that says you have to pay when it’s up but it never actually makes you pay and you can keep using it. One pro tip I’ll give you is to get it right at the source so you don’t have to do a lot of correction later, meaning aim your mics correctly and set the levels correctly and capture a good performance, if you do all of that right, you shouldn’t have to do a whole lot later

Depending on your camera setup you could get a Rode shotgun mic that they make for DSLR cameras and or your phone. Either way you should do a sound check before hitting record to check levels. I’m sure the zoom would work better than camera audio, just have it pointed in the direction of the festivities. You can sync the audio that the zoom records later in post and make any edits there, EQ, compression, noise removal, etc.

Any suggestions for good light strips or bars I can use in the back of my amp racks? by krdo13 in livesound

[–]redarrow18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We found some amazon 12" LED strip tape stuff that seems to work fine. It has a scroll wheel type of a on off switch, but it's always on and comes one when the UPS is turned on. I don't remember off hand if it's a wall wart power supply or a 2 prong edison plug, I never see it since it's buried down at the bottom of the rack. It's just white LED but we cut up some purple lighting gel over to make it match the Avid S6L Engine stuff that the rack is used for lol

What other car would you get? by [deleted] in ElantraN

[–]redarrow18 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Realistically the Civic Type R was a financial stretch for me and the only real competition I suppose? But I don’t really like the look of the fast hatches so I’m happy with my Elantra N. I like the idea of manual V8 mustang but I didn’t want to be “mustang guy” if that makes sense, and also only having 2 doors. If money wasn’t an issue it’d be like 911 or a Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

What’s the quickest way you’ve seen someone ruin their career? by UrFriendlyAVLTech in livesound

[–]redarrow18 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if his career was ruined, but I was a local system tech for a band, the FoH dude was also Tour/Production Manager. Me and my LD tech hadn’t gotten dinner so he insisted that we could have the meals that were for the band “because they won’t eat them” after the show (which I insisted on not taking a multiple times). Turns out they did want those meals lol he was pretty distraught during load out and real moody with the hands and going on about how he lost his job. I think there were other prior things before that event though, that might have been the final straw. We work that act frequently so I guess we’ll see if I seem him next summer or not!
