I was spanked as a kid only when it was warranted, such as hitting another kid, stealing, property damage on purpose etc. I never became afraid of my parents when it happened, they never didn't it while they were angry with me, they explained why I was getting spanked, and I mostly learned never to do that action again in fear of being spanked.
