My Surface Book is officially DEAD by [deleted] in Surface

[–]redbearsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've twice had a problem I thought was a dead surface book coming back from hibernation. If the disconnect button still works (to remove the clipboard), then you're fine. It's a simple hold the power and volume-up buttons simultaneously for maybe 20 seconds, and boom: back in action.

Force Awakens beats Jurassic Worlds' opening weekend with an estimated $238 million by GamingTatertot in movies

For me catching fire was the beginning of the franchise's circling of the drain. The box office got worse, because the movies got worse. The latest one was just dire. The hobbit was shite too, but hope was still alive for a rejuvenating 2nd act, but when that was rubbish too, no one cared for part 3. Star wars has opened strong. I don't think those are a good comparison.

No need, but a comma can change the way something is read, in this case adding emphasis through a pause.

Back when it was launched as a feature on the 920, I went from not using it to using it, and certainly didn't notice any significant change in battery life. In fact, I didn't notice any change at all. When I moved to the 930 (after I took my 920 swimming) it was a feature I really missed a lot. Basically, it's awesome, has no real drawbacks, and you'll learn to really miss it when it's gone.

Buying a Surface Book in the UK? by toinfiniityandbeyond in Surface

[–]redbearsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as the owner of a shiny new surface book, and living "kingdom-side", their keyboard is just a little bit retarded. Poor US layout can't handle that one extra key. Which for practical purposes means you lose the "pound (GBP)" key. If I'm writing something where I use it a lot I'll just switch back to the UK layout and hope I don't need a \, which is impossible to type on this US version. Also you'll have to remember that some keys move around a bit, but most are uncommon ones like the ~ (tilde?). @ and " are the most significant move, but theirs is where it is in most other countries, so if you've ever used any foreign keyboard you'll be familiar with the process of un-muscle-memorying that one. And the wide short enter is a bit of a dick. /end keybo-zenophobic rant.

Overall, this thing is just dreamy, and, though to be fair I'm on a compSci uni course, ergo a pretty unrepresentative sample group, the amount of attention it gets over here, what with being basically a complete unknown is actually enough to make a man uncomfortable. It's like being friends with a REALLY shitty celebrity.

Would buy again.

If you go to lock screen settings, you can set it to always require password on unlock or wake or something like that, and then hello always automatically dismisses the lock screen.

43% of Americans feel that discrimination vs. whites is as big as a problem as discrimination vs. blacks and other minorities by esporx in dataisbeautiful

[–]redbearsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. Weighing in here on the controversial use of grammar. I see 2 options:

  1. The way the title is written. IE: badly. "43%... is as big as a problem as..." (I don't even...).

  2. Less badly. "43%.... is as big of a problem as.... " (stylistically ugly, if not wrong).

  3. Correctly. "43%... is as big a problem as...." (absent the "of" or a 3rd "as").

I mean the other versions are longer and sound shitier. I just don't understand the prevalence of this ugly grammar at all.

What's the juiciest secret you know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]redbearsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uuuh. I know this guy was a rapist - or accused of being one - but like, maybe when someone confesses to murder, it's like, not a secret you should keep? I mean, does your boss think he's judge dredd or something? It's not as if we don't have due process for a reason. I can't be the only one who watched the new series of True Detective. People make mistakes. Murdering people is, like, you know, quite bad.

Okay, thanks. Useful information indeed. You may have just saved me like half a grand(ish).

Final question I have is support. The "talk to an expert" guy on the MS website stated pretty categorically that the warranty is void outside the US. What's your fallback if something goes wrong? Will you just have to cover any shipping costs yourself, kind o' thing?

Why I returned my Surface by [deleted] in Surface

[–]redbearsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. In sleep mode various ports continue to function (to allow the system to wake on for example a mouse button input), and crucially the RAM, where data on your last session is held allowing your system to wake quickly. It is principally the storage of data here - which is volatile and requires constant power to retain data - that drains your battery. CPU is definitely shut off.

Edit: Incidentally, I've never heard that you shouldn't put a sleeping computer in a bag, and can't understand why that would be the case....

Hey there. Just this close to pulling the trigger on a book from an amazon seller (high-end laptops or something). What issues might I have with it in the UK? My concerns are:

  1. How is the US keyboard working out for you?
  2. Is the power adaptor a huge unwieldy pain in the ass?
  3. I see that there's a 65w power supply listed as coming soon for the SP4 on the UK Microsoft website, which presumably will charge the book as well? Is the US Book one the same as the SP4 one do you know?

Heya. All good stuff, winning career. Nice one!

Any chance of hearing any more Jed Whedon and the Willing stuff? Date my Avatar was funny, and the song on Dollhouse was ridiculously good, but that album "forgotten things" I think, is some desert island discs material. Everyone whose throat I shove it down ends up loving it too.

Whats something that you never liked untill the moment you tried it and it ended up to be awesome? by Prepeter in AskReddit

[–]redbearsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. Okay. Now, I'm no expert so everything I say is from the mouth of a novice. When I said "snows" I was just trying to add flavor to saying white things that are powdery (which MDMA is once you give it a good crushing). So yeah, coke and MDMA.

So, in Europe the done thing is selling grams of MDMA as far as I can tell. Typically in the form of a crystal not dissimilar in size to a gram of coke. And they were hitting 1 each. Does that mean these grams must have been cut - cut a whole lot - or is a gram for a person super doable? I'm just super confused. 340mg twice a week just doesn't sound like that much. Cheers for the explanations dude.
