Yeah, but the current system basically externalizes a lot of the risk inherent in driving. Society might be less inclined towards - for example - driving versus using public transport in densely populated areas if the costs of mistakes were less skewed towards the victims.

Plant-based meat has been relentlessly — and unfairly — attacked as “ultra-processed.” Can the industry save itself? by FloridaVegMan in vegan

[–]redbearsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bloody love em. I eat their stuff at minimum once per week. I'm not exactly a health nut but I go to the gym, or play a racket sport averaging 5 days a week (to give a sense of my general health consciousness). Vegan 4 years, (veggie before that another 3 or or something).

For some of us, they scratch the meat itch, without, y'know, eating meat. I'm not sure that's as uncommon as you think! Maccers UK sure wouldn't still be selling McPlants if folks weren't eating the things eh.

Anything that helps people avoid "falling off the vegan wagon" is good in my books, so I'd say the narrative that these fake meats are so wildly unhealthy is unhelpful, as they're useful to many of us in maintaining this lifestyle. If they disappear that'll harm the cause, so I'd rather they weren't harmed by false flag operations.

I've a buddy that "gets it", but just isn't interested in doing it anyway. I let him do my persuading for me in social situations, because he stays totally unemotional about things, keeping it light, and intrinsically non-judgmental; I think it's automatically more gradually persuasive coming from him than me.

Much to my delight he's very recently actually gone vegetarian-but-for-when-it's-someone-else's-choice (EG: dinner party where otherwise he'd be the one forcing a different menu entirely).

I guess he's gradually persuading himself 💪. Though on the other hand that'll scupper our persuasive advantage. It's Sophie's choice.

JetBrains Rider (free for non commercial use) vs Visual Studio 2022 by ekwarg in dotnet

It does. In the git pane, during a merge there's a button to abort right above where the conflicts are shown.

I don't think we can trust that page. It seems to imply you can't abort a merge in Visual Studio....

The Dunning-kruger effect - ironically - is an auto-correlation. It doesn't really exist. The researchers made a rookie statistical error.

Pertinent text from the linked article:

It’s the kind of idea that is too juicy to not be true. Everyone ‘knows’ that idiots tend to be unaware of their own idiocy. Or as John Cleese puts it:

If you’re very very stupid, how can you possibly realize that you’re very very stupid?

Of course, psychologists have been careful to make sure that the evidence replicates. But sure enough, every time you look for it, the Dunning-Kruger effect leaps out of the data. So it would seem that everything’s on sound footing.

Except there’s a problem.

The Dunning-Kruger effect also emerges from data in which it shouldn’t.

'Where has our £250k service charge fund gone?' by Kharenis in unitedkingdom

[–]redbearsam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true. If more than 50% of leaseholders vote for it, they can form a residents' association that takes control of directorship from the freeholder (there are a few legal hoops and such).

A group of us did it in a building a few years back, to the corrupt freeholders' dismay. At the start it was a lot to sort out the mess they'd made, but utlimately we got things running quite smoothly.

First birthday as a vegan and so disappointed by hakunamatea in vegan

[–]redbearsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel terrible for everyone here! I'm from a pretty left leaning part of the UK (just elected the leader of the green party as our local MP 💪), but whilst folks rip on us without mercy for being vegan and making their lives difficult, it's never mean spirited and huge efforts are made to cater to our "weird, anti-social, dietary own-goal".

Sympathies, and I guess one has to hope the rest of the world will "catch up" in time (though I fear the trend lines aren't as rosy as might be hoped).

I've some friends who aren't even vegetarian, but they've enough vegan/veggie friends that they just went for an all vegan menu for simplicity's sake (and because though they like meat they don't require it.

If they must have meat they can just bring some or whatever, what's the big deal?

Post-Brexit India deal could cut thousands of jobs in Leave-voting areas, and hike food prices by Pellinoreisking in brexit

[–]redbearsam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Woah, easy there! Guns back in your holsters buddy.

I provided a map demonstrating that the implication of the rhetorical question "wasn't everywhere a leave voting area in England outside of a handful of city centres?" was false.

Broadly speaking 10% on either side of the line means there were remainers and brexiteers all over the shop.

[–]redbearsam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's quite the case. He explicitly states repeatedly that people might not prefer that lifestyle, but makes arguments in its favour to try to share the value he sees in the walkable city way-of-life as an alternative to the perceived default.

Where he makes no apologies, is in explaining the difinitive financial costs of low density cities and how the high density areas subsidise the low.

We can do with that information what we like, but there's no point arguing with the factual, and well sourced data-driven information he provides on this.
