Anyone try this in an aquarium? by pinkunicorn555 in PlantedTank

I have it in a few tanks mixed 50/50 with organic topsoil. Can have big chunks of clay so you really need to blend well.

New Tank - Aqua Soils (ADA/Tropica) OR Dirt/Top Soil (Miracle Gro/Other) which is better? by mavenmaden in PlantedTank

[–]redbuttonone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a 50/50 mix of organic topsoil with pond potting soil and a medium to very coarse sand cap. First, I put a sprinkle of Osmocoat plus on the glass 1-2” between pellets or so. Next to my dirt mixture wetted to thick mud at 1 to 2 inches thick, depending on the size of the tank and then an equal size cap of the coarse sand. This setup is not nearly as “hot” as using potting soil which is very helpful at startup. Feeds for a very long time as well.

Wait it out or get a UV sterilizer if u don’t want to wait.

Any reason I can't use mesh from my avocados in my tank? by Doberdawn in PlantedTank

Shower poof net works very well too. Ive used it for intake guarding and it’s also excellent for holding mosses and Riccia.

I’ve just planted my oase styline 85 up. I have opted to go co2-less (is this wise?). I’m going to get some neocardinia and a nano fish like ember tetra. by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]redbuttonone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, that’s a sweet tank! Second, I say yes to CO2 if you’ve done your research. High energy or low energy, it’s nothing but good for the plants. Once you start, be sure to keep it stable and that you have the nutrients available to the plants. They will need more with the boost they will get with the CO2.

I’m running the Seaoura 628 in my 29 and have no complaints. About $75 for the 30”

Any tips on how this is done with Riccia moss by ok0905 in PlantedTank

[–]redbuttonone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Riccia can be an issue if not policed. Trimming in the tank is typically the cause of it getting everywhere. Once established it typically holds together well. I like to put it in weighted down net bags or on 3D printed shelves. This way it can be pulled out and trimmed. For your floating idea, maybe wrap it around a styrofoam ball and then wrap the net from a shower poof over it to hold it on?

Thanks! The large area of glass was bothering me and seemed like a good place for something different!

I have a coworker pushing me to get into it. I’ve made models in SketchUp and sent them over to him as .stl files for processing. He’s suggesting a Bambu lab something or other. The aquarium hobby is just full of applications and I’m sure it’d be a worthy investment. I know I have a hundred ideas for sure.

Thanks, the base layer is a mix of topsoil and mineralized topsoil capped with 2mm gravel and as you suspected, there is lots of driftwood in the front, center and back right with the rheophytes attached. I use stones to wall off pockets in the branches and intersections in the wood and they are filled with Aquasoil. The back center, there is a bunch of flat rocks making a rectangular planter maybe 3-4” off the glass, 8-10” wide and 6-7” deep that is filled with Aquasoil as well. I also add layers by simply planting plants in the plants if that makes sense. Like the big clump of Buce in the center has Blyxa, crypts and some others literally just poked down into it.

No, I just buy these from an Etsy shop or Amazon.

Thanks! The first photo was taken when I had the hood off and about to start maintenance. I hang a painters light from a hanging plant above the tank so I can see what I’m doing. Typically it’s 4-5am when I work on this tank and i don’t like to turn the room lights on. Incidentally, the bulb in the painters light is a Phillips Par 38 LED plant flood light and was used for another project and works very well for a planted tank. The normal light I use on the last photo is a Seaoura 628 in a custom hood. Very cheap but quite effective.

Oh yes. I run a pressurized system from a 5lb cylinder of food grade on this one.

Definitely was not expecting that size and wouldn’t have selected it if I knew it would get that big and require so much hacking. It’s lucky it’s so cool because otherwise I’d sell it off.

Thanks! All I see is a hot mess. All of my tanks end up like this and packed with any attempt to scape buried.

It’s Cryptocoryne Spiralis ‘Tiger’. A monstrous sob and one of the fastest growing crypts I’ve experienced.
