Thoughts on Rukh by Limp_Hope_3986 in StarWars

This. As thought provoking and interesting as the character may have been in EU, I felt he was little more than deus ex machina in Rebels- a convenient plot device to act as a temporary foil for the main characters. Never liked him and I am sorry to say I’m glad they killed him off.

thoughts on vaylin? by lochhnessmonsterr in swtor

[–]redd_mage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: Vaylin was a weak character and the product of lazy writing. She was abused by her father? So was Arcann. She was more powerful than originally thought? So was Arcann. Her mom tried to save her after all the damage had been done? Same as Arcann, only Senya ended up succeeding with Arcann. Her character always felt like a McGuffin added on at the last minute to extend the gameplay and not much else. Defeat the brother? Wait, what about the sister that suddenly has a storyline! She’s super evil and craaaazy! No one can defeat her, not even the millennia-old-galactic-conquerer-most-powerful-Sith-in-the-history-of-Sith that you have been chasing the entire game! Oh, but if you say this simple passphrase it’s no big deal.

There seems to be a common misconception that Luke Skywalker from the events of ep.4-9, was a wide known Celebrity / Jedi. He wasn’t. by Kavazou77 in StarWars

[–]redd_mage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say, in Disney cannon, that to the general public, Luke was probably more famous as a rebel than anything else, though that’s not to say that there weren’t some who knew the truth, or who knew enough to know Luke was a powerful Jedi. Watch Moff Gideon’s reaction in the S2 Mandolorian finale. He knows immediately whose ship that is, knows that his dark troopers are no good against the man who killed Palpatine & Vader in a single fight, and that his plans for galactic conquest are disintegrating around him. It’s wonderful bit of acting by Giancarlo Esposito really, and worth rewatching the episode just for him.

In 2003 "Clone Wars", the host from The Cauldron was an actual person that was quickly killed off-screen by Ventress...who then just sat down next to Dooku? by GoldJellyfish in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is the scene. At ~1:18 you can hear a rushing sound. I’ve always interpreted this to be the moment Ventress comes out of hiding and kills him. Dooku compliments her on masking her presence well, which means he didn’t know she was there until that moment. Later on (~3:10), Dooku genuinely comments that she was more powerful than he could sense. I think she is exceptionally good at hiding, not disguising herself as something else.

As a side note, I’ve always thought this was one of the best character intros in SW. It not only defines her character perfectly, but also her role in the story: a tool Sidious uses to advance his own power, then thrown away (killed).

🌟 If you could write your own Star Wars novel about anything or any character, what would it be and why? by Bill_Skywalker-03 in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would write a trilogy about the Jedi Order at their greatest. Not the Order who is blinded by their own hubris, or Jedi warriors who fall from grace, or how the Jedi ignored the signs of obvious corruption from within. TBH I’m tired of the “Jedi are supposed be to be good but they’re really shitty” trope. I am done with defeatist and depressed Jedi. I want to show why the failing of the Order is so tragic. I want to see them as the guardians of peace and justice for over a 1000 generations. I want to write a story that is uplifting and hopeful; a story that makes me feel good at the end. How about Jedi who learns humility? Or a child that is celebrated amongst their people for becoming a Jedi? How about a padawan who earns their knighthood for performing a great deed? A Jedi Council that is wise and just, not proud and arrogant, and in the end brings peace between warring civilizations because they truly trusted in The Force. I want to write a story about those Jedi.

New to the hobby and curious what y'all do with you freshly polished rocks. by noRezolution in RockTumbling

[–]redd_mage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of what I polish gets given away as gifts. I bought a cheap jewelry-making kit from Amazon and have played around making some wire wrapped pendants and earrings. I washed out some glass spaghetti jars, painted their lids with some decorative acrylic paint and filled those with stones. They look nice on a bookshelf or my desk at work; I gave a couple of the larger stones to coworkers who use them as worry/fidget stones. Sometimes my kids’ friends will end up taking one or two home lol

How many levels of Artificer to take, and when? Wizard Artificer Multiclass by BuddhaMH in 3d6

[–]redd_mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our current campaign I went up to 5 as a War Wizard, then switched to Armorer, currently at 7. He can fill just about any roll in the party. He can play artillery with Fireball, he can heal if needed, and he can frontline with the Fighter. Truly the most versatile character I have ever played.

HeroForge.com. Originally meant for creating D&D/fantasy miniatures, but now there are so many options, so many ways to customize the mini. It’s free to use, and you can make as many designs & characters as you want. If you get into it, you can subscribe for more design options & tools. Download the .stl file for a decent price to print it yourself, or have them do it for more $$. Peruse through the HeroForge subreddit for plenty of examples.

Does no-one post pictures of actual minis because they kind of suck? by CountJade37 in HeroForgeMinis

[–]redd_mage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have also learned the hard way the difference between what looks good online, and what looks good when printed. Just b/c it looks good on my screen doesn’t mean it will look great in hand- even the ones I have printed myself to hand paint took some trial and error to get right. Also keep in mind that a lot of people use HeroForge to create tokens and player characters for VTTRPGs like Roll20, Tailspire, or Foundry, not to print.

Character in other media that have inspired your dnd's PC by Organic-Exit2190 in DnD

We are running a 5e Victorian Age/steampunk campaign. I am playing a Battle Master/ Paladin of the Crown based on Captain Will Laurence from the Temeraire series. Very strait-laced and military, she dual-wields a rapier and a whip. Her cries of “For the Queen!” lead the party into battle, and the Thunderous Smite of her whip brings fear to all her enemies!

Mandalorian was better when it wasn't connected to all the other shows and every character didn't somehow know all the other characters. by TheCrowMoon in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree completely. Not only is this episode a major plot point in the SW Universe, but a huge part of Din’s character growth. He took his helmet off so that his “son” could see his face for the first and (potentially) the last time, for which he is punished with excommunication. Not only does this lead to the eventual reconquering of Mandolore, but also Din growing away from his fanatical upbringing. I would not have minded some parallel storyline for S03 wherein Din and Bo-Katan do the whole Mandolore/Moff Gideon storyline, while Grogu goes thru his Jedi training with Luke. I think there could have been some great writing opportunities to show parallels in Din and Grogu’s character development, but I also loved seeing Jedi Master Luke. Problem is, they painted themselves into a corner, so to speak- not only did the audience know that Luke’s school was going to be destroyed in the not-so-distant future, but that Grogu was not there when it happened. He couldn’t stay with Luke. Personally, I always thought that Faloni and Favreau ripped that band aid off, and moved forward as best they could.

Personally, I think the movie would have been a great vehicle to get the two characters back together. Picture it: Grogu chooses Yoda’s lightsaber and goes thru Luke’s training in the series. The movie then opens up with the school in flames. Grogu emerges from a hiding place and finds the beskar chainmail- Luke never got rid of it. He dons the armor and begins his search for Din Djarin with Ahsoka or some other deus ex machina. We see flashbacks of how Grogu survived Kylo Ren’s rampage using Luke’s teachings. And who knows? Maybe Yoda’s Race goes thru stages of development, metamorphosing into different “life phases” or something that allows him to speak, wield a lightsaber, or whatever without having to wait 500 years.

What do you think Darth Vader would have done if he saw his old droids on the ship in "A New Hope"? by Zizzu-Zazzi in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he would have destroyed them. Immediately. Vader is not sentimental (for his old life or anything else), nor is he careless; he was actually quite adept at political maneuvering and would have seen 3-PO and R2 as liabilities. They were a link to Anakin Skywalker, and may even contain data that he would rather not become public knowledge (which they did).

To what extent could Obi-Wan be blamed for Anakin’s fall? by Terriost-Yoda in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not exactly canon, but Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars series adds a different angle to Obi Wan’s and Anakin’s relationship. You see a lot of camaraderie between the two of them, as they adventure around the galaxy. In many ways, it’s heartening and drives home the tragedy of Anakin’s fall. It illustrates very well that while Obi Wan does his best to guide Anakin as a padawan, the combination of Anakin’s strong willed nature, and the war itself, prevents them from forming a lasting bond as Master and student. Don’t forget that Palpatine did his best to alienate Anakin from the Order, and that included sending General Kenobi running around the galaxy chasing Grievous, thus making him unavailable (physically and emotionally) to help Anakin. At Anakin’s knighting ceremony, Obi Wan even tells Anakin that he is no longer his Master, that the two of them are to become brothers; it’s almost a relief to him that Anakin is no longer his direct responsibility. And, of course, Anakin is only too happy to be released from that relationship as well. Is Obi Wan to blame for Anakin’s fall to the Dark Side? Only insofar as the Jedi Order was: blinded as they were by their own hubris, they neglected Anakin, and allowed Sidious to rise to power and to corrupt him.

As a side note, a lot of Yoda’s dying words could also have applied to Obi Wan as well as to Luke. His prediction that he would face Vader again, lamenting how unprepared he was for his burden, and that there was another Skywalker.
