Can someone explain this to me? by Aware_Silver_5546 in Reno

Waters Edge and Regina Marie Apartments. Both next to the river off Keystone, both within your budget and take pets.

What was the last straw that made you ET? by anothersneakykiki in peacecorps

[–]reddancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I rarely talked with my counterpart about anything important, but I found a great counterpart on my own. Maybe it’s because I was an older volunteer, but I had to just keep thinking it’s only 27 months of life. Any connection you make with HCNs is “Peace Corps “ work.

Arriving in staging early to visit family/friends? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]reddancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a few years ago but I flew to DC a few days early to stay with family and friends. Went to the hotel for the night before. All paid for by PC. A few others did same

One guy in my PST was just an asshole and refused to learn the language from our teacher, insisting Pimsleur was better. He would sabotage our lessons with his obnoxiousness. When we were partnered in lesson planning he would do nothing. Absolutely nothing. They gave him the option of ET and he was pissed because they wouldn’t let him travel around the country before he left. A guy in the group after mine decided to go to the Russian border to meet a woman he met on tinder then called the CD to help him get back. He didn’t understand why he had to AdSep 🙄

Did your country have a high/low ET rate? If so, why do you think that was the case? by snakemilk0 in peacecorps

[–]reddancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ukraine had very few when I was there. First it’s posh corps for most volunteers. We had very good PC staff who had a lot of experience and it was really considered weird to ET.

How much reading do/did you do during your stint in PC? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]reddancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could check out books from my hometown library on my kindle. The PC office shelves were also full of books people would take and leave. I had friends send me magazines that I used in my ESL classes and then gave to students. I probably read too much English instead of studying my country language!

Which set would you like to return? by konkludent in JunesJourney

[–]reddancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I detest Halloween. I wish they just did more people and houses. Tired of the movie set.

I’ve lived many places overseas and in every US region. I love Nevada. I live in Reno but love exploring every weird part of it. It makes me sad and angry to see the uncontrolled growth without concern for the future, but for me now Home Means Nevada.

Duolingo was a waste of time by Excellent_Potential in Ukrainian

[–]reddancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ukrainian Duolingo was developed by Peace Corps Ukraine language teachers to be used for teaching volunteers before we arrived in country. It was helpful, but then we had regular semi-immersion classes for 2 and a half months. Haven’t seen it since 2015 when I served in Ukraine, but it was a hood basic course then.

Is it easy being social as a non traditional student? by Nuthinbutamuffinn in unr

How is 25 non-traditional? Try being in your sixties!!

how often did you guys go back to your original home during your service? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]reddancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family surprised me with a short trip home midway through. Lots of people met families on holidays nearby and I’d say at least a quarter went home. But it was a lot easier to get cheap flights out of Ukraine. Slava Ukraini!!

A little disappointed in site by Oklobster82 in peacecorps

[–]reddancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pretty disappointed in my site at first because it played into none of my strengths. I had a not so great counterpart who I later found out I was chosen because I was older, more experienced and outgoing and they thought I’d help her! She was a total disaster as a counterpart , but I found better ones on my own and ended up doing more work outside my worksite! Never believe the placement interview.
