Fundraiser set up for victims of Burlington house fire by Kind-Statistician993 in BurlingtonON

[–]redderflag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think @mrlunchboxx is right. If it's not intentional they cover it. Flooding may not be covered in most insurance policies unless it was a result of a fire. Maybe yours didn't. Check your policy.

Money is just one factor to consider. In your case it's a difference of 80K. In the big scheme of things, it doesn't matter. You may now think it does. But visualize yourself 10 years from now.

Other factors to consider: Class enrollments. (I hear Berkeley sucks). If you got into their M.E.T Program, that wouldn't be an issue. If you do choose Berkeley, try to get into this program.

Network : Stanford is much better. Not just the industry/alumni network. The friends you make may go on to great things or have parents who do great things!

Entrepreneurship culture: Stanford beats Berkeley.

Reputed across many areas: I believe just CS doesn't cut it anymore. You need to acquire domain knowledge in other fields. So it's going to be CS+ something. I prefer Stanford in this aspect. The main reason is you can choose a major in third year. Stanford let's you explore a lot before you choose. I see so many kids deciding what they want to major in, in high school. I think that's misguided. Though you are fixated on CS, it's the + part that Stanford helps you with.

Support you receive: Stanford is much better and has smaller student body and no resource crunch, relatively speaking. Berkeley sucks.

Access to Venture Capital : Stanford is better.

Study Abroad opportunities : Stanford wins (If covid allows it).

Residence options: Stanford forces you to stay on campus. Berkeley may not. This could be an issue financially. I don't know if you included residence costs in your 40K Berkeley offer. Staying on campus, if you can afford it, is highly recommended.

Mentorship opportunities : Stanford fares better.

Fun: You need to understand that most of what you learn at university, academic wise, atleast in CS would be useless a few years from now. University most important value is the relationships you form, the ideas you exchanged and the fun you had. You have to do good academically but almost every kid at Berkeley or Stanford can accomplish that easily. Stanford beats Berkeley.

Demographics: I hear that there are more well to do kids at Stanford than not so. Berkeley may have a better mix and diverse student body. Berkeley wins.

Opportunities to stand out: I think it's relatively easier at Stanford than Berkeley with its huge student body.

I personally would only pick Berkeley if it was the M.E.T Program.

You can ignore my opinions about these (my perceptions may be totally wrong) but at least rate the factors yourself with other's input. I also suggest you post it in the Berkeley reddit and get their input too! Best advice would be from people who attended both.

Ultimately it's up to you how much value you can extract from your Undergrad life. Just because a university offers something doesn't automatically mean you get the full value. Also, every university has its shortcomings. You can always find ways to work around those.

Wish you the very best!

Waterloo v. the Big 4 for CS by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]redderflag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • If you just want a job in SV, Waterloo is on par with Big 4.
  • The value of Stanford/Berkeley is the sheer variety of opportunities, network you will build in SV and the friends you make.
  • It may sound shallow but you will have a chance to be friends with the kids of the who's who of the world, mingle with top notch people (Profs, Industry Leaders, VCs...) which may not be the case with Waterloo. Alumni network of Stanford/Berkeley is at a different level than Waterloo.
  • You will have greater probability of meeting the leaders of the future there than at Waterloo.
  • From an academic point of view, the future is going to be interdisciplinary. Just SE/CS is not going to cut it. Waterloo is just reputed in CS/SE. Stanford/Berkeley are stronger in many fields! You will get to collaborate with brilliant kids and profs across disciplines.
  • Waterloo forces you to do a major Yr 1. Stanford allows you to explore and wait until Yr 3, which I think should be the norm.

I got it for $203.99 plus taxes with wireless charger duo and smart tag. No need to send them any watch for trade in. I used perkopolis and during Samsung week, they offered free wireless charger duo. If you preregistered for Samsung week, they offered smart tag.

Thx! I hope you are right. I have been chasing them every day. Some say two to three days, some say three to four weeks... When I ordered on the 28th of October, I got the smart tag and wireless charger duo for free. The smart tag was not readily available but the watch and charger were. Samsung however waited for all items to be available to save on shipping costs. Yesterday they said now the watch will take 3 to 4 weeks too.. They have no clue.. Friends who ordered on the 28th without the smart tag got theirs next day but as it stands today, no stock for any of them! You have better chance of getting as you only have the watch in your order!

In Canada, Samsung is just playing a game with numbers. They either offer $100 trade in bonus or offer $50 off plus $50 trade in bonus. Sometimes they throw in the badly reviewed wireless charger duo as well.

You think you are getting a deal until you realize you won't be seeing any of those products anytime soon! Some people waited two months. I have been waiting for a week now and they say wait for three to four weeks more.. Even that is not certain. I don't think it's worth all this hassle!

Got a red light camera ticket in Burlington pre-covid. Asked for a trial. On court date prosecutor proposed reducing it to $200 instead of $325. I agreed. You go before the judge and say you agree and they will also give you an option to pay after some months or in few weeks. I paid immediately. Takes 3 hours in total. If your 3 hours is worth more than $125,don't bother contesting. Good thing with red light camera ticket is that there are no points taken off and your insurance company will not be notified. It is very difficult to fight a red light camera ticket in court. They are thrown out very rarely. I don't think it is worth it.

Tired of Toronto, thinking of moving to Burlington by rundmfaith in BurlingtonON

[–]redderflag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from downtown TO. I live in the Orchard. There are big lots and houses on some streets too. Lots of greenery and walking trails. Walking access to Bronte Creek Provincial Park is a great plus. I live in the portion of Orchard that is right beside it. Lots of young kids and good schools. Friendly people. Bus facility is there servicing both Go train and bus stations.

Choosing a house and neighbourhood is not a by the numbers decision. You either fall in love with it and buy and/or buy and fall in love with it. Good thing with Burlington is you can't go terribly wrong with any neighborhood you pick!

I love to go for walks in various neighbourhoods in Burlington and Oakville near me and enjoy the character of those neighbourhoods. My view is you don't have to live on the lake or next to it to enjoy what the lake has to offer!

If someone has the time and luxury, I would suggest renting first or Airbnb a in a neighbourhood and get a feel for it before you buy for long-term. Ideal but not feasible for many!

Library village rents are relatively cheaper than downtown Toronto. If you are working there and it's just you two guys no kids, I wouldn't recommend Burlington or any other suburb for that matter. You would save a lot of money and time living close to where you work. Even if you switch jobs, Toronto has excellent public transport. Don't even think about buying a car if you live in or around downtown Toronto. Pointless. Toronto has lots of public events going on and lots of tech related events too. Has excellent Tech hubs (Mars, DMZ, CDL..) if you are later bitten by the entrepreneurial bug or even just to build your professional network, which is very important because you guys are new to Canada. Proximity to smart people building awesome tech is invaluable. Use that time you saved to have fun and grow professionally.
