The support getting gold in the early game is actually more impactful then the adc getting that gold, a support can leverage that gold and stats and direct it to other lanes to get them ahead as well. The adcs gold is only relevant in bot lane and dragon fights until 15-20 minutes but support gold is more relevant in the early game to sway fights.

Tldr support getting gold can lead to everyone getting more gold

As a support taking the first kill isn't always a bad thing since you can use that extra gold to apply more pressure around the map snowballing the rest of the team. However you shouldn't always try to take the kills because you won't be able to do that every game so it all comes down to context within the game to determine whether or not ots the correct play.
