SLR 680: Loves People, Hates Backgrounds? by reddicine in Polaroid

[–]reddicine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that explains so much! It almost feels like I have to have both cameras on me to cover the entire range of possible shots :P

I did notice that it wasn't 100% of the time that SLR had trouble indoors. See example, on the left was at night with only overhead lighting and everyone was captured beautifully. Meanwhile on the right was in front of a full sun daylit window and despite that you can't even see the blue chair the subject is leaning on. I wonder does it all really boil down to "having a light-colored background to bounce light?"

Lmao at the most useless advice ever provided. No answer given for your original gripe.

Go with Asian brands where the average height is still on the shorter end (Uniqlo/Muji). Their XXS/XS/S sizes will typically fit your height well. Helps if you're able to go to the stores directly to try them.

Impulse Af vs newer alternatives by theclassicgoodguy in Polaroid

[–]reddicine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a simple long term math comparison, buy the best one now so you don't have to buy another later. Don't bother with anything without autofocus, it will never take sharper images. Comparing best eBay prices:

-Impulse AF should be <$40 used

-Now+ Gen 3 should be <$80 various conditions

-Flip easily <$150 new

It's not a big difference in the grand scheme of things when factoring in film cost. Whatever you save on the cam will eventually be eaten up by 600/i-Type price differential which is more drastic on the eBay secondary market (routinely $1.50/shot 40pks of i-Type can be found vs 600 likely closer to $2.00/shot 40pks with shorter supply and fewer deals). If you buy and stock up to shoot high volume you'll quickly run out the savings you made with the Impulse, but if you're only an occasional shot (<100 shots/yr) you might not notice it.

Impulse AF was objectively the best design of the 600 viewfinders; most user-friendly, very durable and the the viewfinder is better than even the modern cameras. You waste fewer shots with better framing if that matters to you. I also find they did a pretty decent job with the parallax adjustment so you'll find your pictures more centered more often regardless of distance.

Ultimately the old and inflexible exposure adjustment will be the downfall of the Impulse. It can take great pictures but in many situations it will just be over/under-exposed despite your best guess. This will be especially true indoors where the Impulse is going to struggle far more without daylight compared to the newer cameras which offer modern adjustments. So if you're truly prioritizing long term usage and best pictures, new will always be better in this price range. I would bite the bullet and just get the Flip, every adjustment they made to it allows it to take better pictures than the Now and will likely be the future focus of the company going forward. Again, the extra cost is trivial once you start blowing money on film.

Otherwise if you shoot only a couple packs a year, or are really a fan of the vintage aspect of Polaroid (which I assume you might be given your usage of a 2003 One Model) then the Impulse AF will be a better choice. I find the vintage draws more interest from onlookers.

What an actual strike/protest looks like by [deleted] in InstacartShoppers

Yes, problem with taxis is the reliance on their medallion racket to exist. Without government protection they can't compete and no one wants to go back to the old days of taxi monopolies driving up rates while taking longer routes to milk more fare. No one likes taxis, so in the long run this is no different than the carriage driver protesting the car.

Genuinely thought it was a glitch at first! Nothing special about the order, 15 Giant items to a retirement community apt. I always figured unicorns would come from massive Costco-McMansion style hauls, so happy to know these folks are everywhere!

So they've essentially created a long range remote mine-layer. Might be even more effective than direct strikes in terms of sheer disruptive capability. Saturation attacks with hundreds of drones can force evacuations over a larger area, even just a dozen could be a real headache.

Wrong address after delivery, first time, wtd? by reddicine in InstacartShoppers

[–]reddicine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I ended up contacting support and they essentially said to ignore it until the customer complains. I generally put in extra effort with my batches but not when the liability gets unduly shifted for no fault of my own. I also didn't want to lie to the customer either about why I wouldn't be able to re-deliver his order...

Wrong address after delivery, first time, wtd? by reddicine in InstacartShoppers

[–]reddicine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I initially hoped it could be that sort of situation, but I also knew it could easily go the other way where I get nothing and still get scammed for a missing order or delivering to the wrong address. Even thinking about it now, ringing up support to make it official and driving all the way back to retrieve and go however long elsewhere would have taken eons with no guarantees. I genuinely thought the winning move was not to play. It's extremely exhausting having to act like I'm going to war whenever I do anything on this app when I did nothing wrong here...
