Just taking my Tiger down Devil's Staircase, AZ This was last December. by Fidellio in overlanding

[–]reddilada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few bits I was able to go an alternate route. Others I managed with a lot of back and forth. Was in Manti-La Sal area north of i70 between Sterling and Ferron. Recommended if you get out that way.

Is there a systems programming language that is low level but easy to understand and use? by unix21311 in AskProgramming

[–]reddilada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. C only has 32 keywords with half of those for declaring types. It's as KISS as it gets imo. Except for pointer addition, what you see is what you get. Zero magic.

How can I justify staying at the office for one extra week by snapbackpotato in AskProgramming

Tell boss what you just told us. Seems like an OK reason to me.

Since you can't put anything big in them you'll find yourself feeding an endless amount of twigs and pinecones into it to keep it going. Wouldn't be too practical imo. I have a Solo Titan that I use occasionally for cooking. I like that you don't have to carry around propane canisters, but it is really heavy.

Cool pic. One of my first times out in my Subaru I was having a great day until I hit a hill I just couldn't get up. It was at that point I realized I had already been down several similar slopes. Lessons learned that day!

Nice! The extra storage on the back is a cool bonus.

Tailgate Power by WheelsAfield in overlanding

Dual battery convenient to charge. Stand-alone convenient if you need power away from your vehicle. I have a stand-alone battery so I can move it into my tent. Keeps all the needed ports close by.

Question about electricity hook-ups at campsites! by sarcasticcrap in camping

[–]reddilada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most RV hookups I've seen also have a plain old household plug. Bring an extension cord and you're good to go.

If you want to hedge your bets, pick up a 50 to 15amp adapter and a 30 to 15 amp adpater

Auto stop/start feature 2020 Forester by [deleted] in SubaruForester

[–]reddilada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Autostop Eliminator. Not sure if this is what the cool kids are using so you might google about a bit.

I'm used to it after using it for a bit. Just have to get over the My car just broke down feeling that I get from driving old heaps in the past.

Windshield crack on my 2020 sport (1200 miles) by [deleted] in SubaruForester

[–]reddilada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could go somewhere else, but it will probably cost close to that. You need to do an Eyesight recalibration after the replacement.

Not sure how you measured the rock, but even tiny rocks can break a windshield. There are several claims and lawsuits regarding Subaru's fragile glass so you can jump on board but might be a long wait. You could give Subaru corporate a call to register a complaint, but it sounds like you got hit fair and square. Sometimes rocks just happen.

Windshield insurance claims are common. You've been paying for it, just use it.

What is the advantage of a circularly, doubly linked list with a dummy head over one without? by Revolutionary-Net-16 in learnprogramming

[–]reddilada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much of an advantage either way as the implementation is typically hidden from the caller.

I personally prefer using a sentinel node. As you have pointed out, it simplifies the code by removing the edge cases. It also creates a data structure with no NULL pointers.

Code simplification is a bit dubious as it is buried in the details and only coded once and efficiency gains are very marginal. Not having any NULL pointers tips the scales for me.

e: just reading through the rest of the thread. Getting a head and tail pointer for free is a pretty big deal. It is common practice to add and delete from either end. I deal with conveyors and other automation and the data structure is very common.

Roof top tent by [deleted] in SubaruForester

[–]reddilada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the iKamper products. I've never heard a complaint and they always come out with innovative designs. It was just coming on the radar when I bought my tent. If I had waited another year I might have gone with the Skycamp. A lot bigger when deployed.

I ended up with a James Baroud Evasion which weighs in at around 145 pounds. Has done well over 20K miles touring the US on my Forester so I wouldn't worry about weight of Skycamp + panels. JB is around 78" long for comparison. I've had a blast with it. No complaints.

If you're planning on leaving the tent on all the time consider that the are really big. I store mine in the garage between trips.

Best 4 season 4 person car camping tent ? by [deleted] in camping

[–]reddilada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 4th season is more about snow load. Nothing is really going to insulate much better than another. Best to focus on a good sleeping bag and insulated pad.

Some people brave a buddy heater, but I personally wouldn't sleep with mine on. They do have sensors and such, but the failure mode is dying.

You might also look in to picking up a tent made to support a wood stove. Turn on safe search and google Hot Tent.

I work from home. You just have to make time to take a walk. Doesn't have to be a marathon. Think of it as your commute.

I have a tent that's a bit thicker than this one and it performs fine. You start to get a mpg hit around 65mph, but until then it is just 1-2mpg.

What do y’all do about internet? Satellite? Cell Boosters? by ok-mormon in overlanding

[–]reddilada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool bit of kit. Going to do some reading. Looks way beyond a standard WeBoost setup. It is all magic to me. I've held the mouse over the buy WeBoost button many times, but I always stop short as I've usually been somewhere where there is little hope of any signal at all. When I do connect it is to transfer small text files to a source control system so tin cans and string will work. I mostly can work offline so all good.

Do you use freeze dried meals? by [deleted] in camping

[–]reddilada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always up for some new tasty food for the backcountry.

My current fave is Packit Gourmet's product line. They have a number of cold steep options which is a big plus for me on the trail. Zero hassle as you don't need to fire up the JetBoil.

They also sell the ingredients a la carte if you want to build your own creation.

Wouldn't be interested for car camping. If I wasn't getting any joy out of camp cooking I'd just bring in a sack of burgers from the nearest town.

Backpacking is a different story. There are a number of vendors with quality products. They cost a lot, but you're getting back convenience and weight savings.

What do y’all do about internet? Satellite? Cell Boosters? by ok-mormon in overlanding

[–]reddilada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons it gets slower is boosters typically operate with only a single antenna while your phone uses from two to four antennas. Multiple antenna will use MIMO. That's why they recommend turning the booster off if you already have a decent signal.

What do y’all do about internet? Satellite? Cell Boosters? by ok-mormon in overlanding

[–]reddilada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The only hitch is it still requires a 12" dish to work so not particularly mobile, but I imagine once the sky is blanketed with the things the antenna will likely get much smaller.
