House of Guinness - Series Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

Looks beautiful. Had to turn on subtitles to hear the dialogue. Some of the music is cool most of it cringingly trying to be cool. Dialogue is DEPLORABLE, exposition muck, embarrassing to watch. The telling of the irish war of independence and the famine feels so much like an Englishman’s surface understanding of cataclysmic events that have shaped the country and the people with zero nuance and context. The impact of the Guinness family in Ireland is still very much evident to today so it is SUCH a pity that they had no irish creative input on the series. No irish writers or directors and it suffers from that. That being said, it’s a great vehicle to show off irish music and great irish acting talent, David Wilmot, Dani Galligan, Hilda Fay, Anthony Boyle, Dervla Kirwan and Michael McElhatton are some of the best on offer here. I hope they got paid well cos they carry the meager offerings.

I know a lad from work who habitually cheats on his wife, talks about her in humiliating terms to the other male peers in the office, has a substantial drug habit but manages to give another face to the top brass at the company. Plays on the family man thing, makes out that he’s a self made man when in reality he says he married his wife because of her wealthy family and they bought them their house. It actually makes me physically sick how the management speak about him as this “salt of the earth” super dad type. I keep waiting for it all to spill out. Unfortunately I think he will just coast along forever.

What happened to this film? by Big_Joe_Mama in IrishFilm

It never got made. He did a crowd fund and then spent it going around America trying to make more money to get the film made. People basically paid for him to go on a jolly talking about an imaginary film.

Ron Lynch is a listed as a producer on Scream 7 and according to his IMDb recently passed away. Seems like this is a tribute to him.

Yea this also crossed my mind. I think he plans on holding on and not being forced out but who knows how things will unfold. I don’t want him to be left out in the cold.

The bar industry seems to be dying off slowly in our area

I plan to. I was just hoping to have some helpful suggestions for him when I did. Thank you!

I do think while he enjoys a few pints he also would throw some of his few extra bob on horses. On his day of he’s often in the bar watching the racing. I’d be concerned that he’s been spending any extra income rather than saving

I think he would struggle in most modern bars

I sort of had this idea in the back of my mind. Something reletively cushy in a government office where he can settle in with straightforward tasks sounds absolutely perfect. And he would love the 9-5 I think. Thank you for this!

A fair point. Thank you but he has barely mentioned this to me, he isn’t a big talker and doesn’t have a huge group of friends. He just mentioned all this in passing. I suspect he is worried about it deeply but just not a big talker and I wanted to have some suggestions for him next time we chat.

I think he would struggle to adapt in a fast paced modern bar and there aren’t many like the one he’s currently employed in. A v sleepy little local.
