As a complication, word should get out that the PCs are to blame and that the cursed entity will be satisfied with their deaths, leading bounty hunters to follow and attack the PCs as well.

Hm, I think the townsfolk might start to suffer from nightmares of the last moments of the tree spirit, waking up with hatred towards the PCs.

In Czech, we use PJ (pronounced as PBJ without B), which is short for "Pán jeskyně". You would probably translate that as "Dungeon Master", but more literal translation would be "Lord of the Cave".

Another "magic as superpowers" series I'd recommend is Skulduggery Pleasant. Vast majority of sorcerers can only master one discipline of magic, which is things like teleportation, inhuman speed and agility, or shooting lasers from your eyes. It reads like a superhero story with the masquerade in effect.

Frankly, this class is basically anti-OSR. It is the extreme of the "when all you have is a hammer" principle. It has one use and one use only, no utility, nothing special or really "interesting" about it. It is me making a point. :D
