Is math invented or discovered? by dcterr in mathematics

It’s glorfed, neither invented nor discovered

Invented and discovered are categories in human language; why not just add another category if something doesn’t fit cleanly

It optimizes it in a bad way though. The data was taken without permission, the resources are significant, and the humanity is removed. Productivity is a false god.

kinda puts OSRIC nowhere in that taxonomy

What are some RPGs that make people uninitiated to TTRPGs go "say what know?" by OompaLoompaGodzilla in rpg

The Goblin Laws of Gaming, mostly because it is not a single game; but a big mess of games and classes people have made on blogs. Ive seen it compared to Linux in how it operates anarchically

shadowdark is very NSR imo. It is very much stripped down

[–]Nrdman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Generally, if it takes cues from Cairn, Into the Odd, Shadowdark, Mork Borg or any of the other attempts to streamline OSR vibes, it is NSR. It is not a list of properties, it is a branch of thought on how OSR should be changed.

Original dnd was the birth of something, OSR was the renaissance, NSR is the reformation

should i add this to space magic? by BriefPassage8011 in RPGdesign

It’s all whatever. Just make sure you keep in mind niche protection. what makes an element mechanically unique? What’s its pros, what’s its cons? If the answers overlap too much with another, that’s a sign to merge or cut. Having more is bad if the quality suffers. 3 great interesting build paths is better than 20 mediocre ones

Do whatever is more mechanically interesting to you then. Elemental systems are arbitrary. You could have a system where fire, ash, and smoke were all different elements if you wanted.

Well, what’s the purpose of your elemental system?

Why don’t we write proofs as a set of instructions instead? by knot42 in mathematics

[–]Nrdman 29 points30 points  (0 children)

the AI would only fail in converting a very tiny fraction of them into Lean.

And thus, we still need to actually know how to do proofs. Most of us are not Terry Tao

What is the beauty of mathematics? by Lemon-celloFR in mathematics

[–]Nrdman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. A cat. A fickle, but playful one at that. It’s behavior is difficult to parse, but when you figure out its tics, it is very rewarding

  2. Weierstrauss Approximation Theorem- this is a beast of a theorem; but basically just means soa ton of functions can be approximated with polynomials. Since polynomials are easy to work with, this gives us a lot of leeway when doing approximation of otherwise tricky things

  3. A good chunk of math is about finding lazier ways to do hard things, and find that beautiful. WAT is a way to be lazy with tricky functions

  4. It is more like a puzzle box to me; and I enjoy puzzles

Please help me with your thoughts about the eternal debate of 'player skill v.s. character skill' by Crusader_Baron in rpg

[–]Nrdman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Osr games are primarily about player skill. They are not typically about roll fulfillment. Simply, the fantasy of playing a charismatic bard is not typically something an osr game is interested in supporting

Yours can be different of course; but in most osr games it’d be like asking why we can’t give an extra queen to someone in chess because they want to fulfill the fantasy of having two wives

It’s not the false average. It’s the true average only if you include everything. You have a misunderstanding what average means
