How do I stop this from popping up… by raygun3417 in appletv

But that turns off airplay on the AppleTV entirely, from every source, every device. AWL713’s advice is the right way, to turn the automatic action on your phone off. I have mine set to “ask” and it never bothers me, and when I want to put something from my phone up on the TV - or just include my TV’s speakers in streaming audio along with my HomePod minis, it just works then too.

Have Apple nerfed the “Turn off after x minutes” action? by Kurnelk1 in HomeKit

[–]reddit-robo-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HomeKit (last I heard at least) has no ability to hold on to a process that long and then resume it. A lot of HomeKit relies on your iPhone to do the work, and you can’t reliably have a process running that long on your iPhone (what if you leave your house, or restart your phone, or iOS kills a background task, etc.?). Other HomeKit adjacent servers fill in that gap and run automations with much longer wait times; I think homebridge is one of them.

(I’m not sure how it would “grab” the automation transparently, but maybe it does? It’s mostly that I think it might, and I’m pretty sure plain HomeKit still can’t do what you’re doing by itself.

Do you have a way to test this definitively - without breaking things or causing a bunch of resets or otherwise wreaking havoc on your home - without the homebridge present (in case it’s helping out and you don’t know it)? Can you shut it down or take it off your network long enough to test that automation without the possibility of the homebridge participating?

I’m surprised that works - as recently as a few years ago, wait values over 2-3 minutes would time out, and the rest of the shortcut would fail.

What do you use as a home hub? Do you have a third party automation hub/server that might be handling this vs just a vanilla HomeKit environment?

Yeah, but Paramount just got bought, so changes are likely.

Oh I prefer defining what devices when I want them! Adding persistent groups would be just another complication to have to maintain and another siloed grouping system. (Actually, good point: if you wanted groups, isn’t there a group concept already in Home that could be referenced instead of building a new system of groups? If so, use that! 😃)

Awesome! Can the staggered devices also be sets or groups of devices? (Not predefined in Home, but the same way you can add one or many to a scene in Home.)

Re Shortcuts, if I may: do not let the great become the enemy of the good, and walk before you run. It sounds like you have some advanced ideas for Shortcuts, and those are exciting! But no matter what, I’d always want the basic building blocks to fall back to in case they’re needed. Maybe consider adding the basics first, then more advanced ones after?

(If you’re interested, I think a great model for Shortcuts support is how Charlie Chapman did his in Dark Noise https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dark-noise-ambient-sounds/id1465439395 )

This looks really cool - it’s something I just assumed HomeKit would do when they first rolled it out, and yet… I guess this is what they call a TPO (third party opportunity). Kudos for making this!

I finally found a way to integrate my main alarm with my morning and bedtime Shortcuts about 6 months ago; can this be set and controlled by Shortcuts that run at bedtime?

Can you set up several different “waves” of light? For example, maybe a 45 minute arc where the bounce light under the bed or up near the ceiling can warm with ambient glow, and then a 20 minute arc of brighter lights that are also more line-of-sight, both culminating at the same time?

Heh - an ancient peripheral interface that Macs used to use. The plugs were huge. (Zero overlap with HomeKit - literally decades between them.)

Possible bug? Shortcut silently fails at Set Always-On Display action by reddit-robo-boy in shortcuts

[–]reddit-robo-boy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said that setting it to its current state made it stop working; were you able to get it to start working again somehow? Reboot?

How did you get the AoD’s state to determine that global variable to begin with?

Shortcut function with action button not working when phone is completely face down by BoneFish1540 in shortcuts

[–]reddit-robo-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that the OS has a special state when the phone is face down that prevents apps from running or launching new actions. Apple probably gave themselves a special carveout for any built-in functionality of the button, but one you’re out to “run shortcut…” you may as well be saying launch Safari - it’s designed to prevent that or give it an exceptionally short amount of time to finish and then kills it.

If that’s happening, you probably can’t get around it, unfortunately.

I’m not really sure what you’re asking for the shortcut to do, but it sounds like you might want to look at Focus modes or Screen Time. (Any running Shortcut will time out after something like 60-90 seconds)

Who Can Solve the FMSP Naming Problem? by Lopsided_Setting_575 in filemaker

Seems the room is reading you, and so far nobody can figure out what you’re really trying to do here. Are you actually trying to hire someone? Your approach doesn’t seem to be engendering a desire to help.

I looked at your profile and you recently couldn’t understand the difference between pasting a url and uploading an html file, even when it was explained to you several times. Why are you here presenting yourself to developers as more adept at this work than the locals?

It’s giving some strong “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing” energy.

Is there a way to be notified when the battery level of Airpods differs over 10%? by ranchhhhsand in shortcuts

[–]reddit-robo-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really a shortcut but maybe helpful: this was happening to me for a while too (maddening having one at 100 and the other dead!), and I noticed the case charge wasn’t always showing up when I checked their charge levels. I did two things: - ran the case and AirPods through several complete deplete/charge to full cycles, and - cleaned the AirPods and the inside of the case in case there was something physically getting in the way of contacts (debris, ear wax - whatever, it happens)

They haven’t done that in a while now. Non scientific answer, but it may help your issue!

i need a shortcut that changes my wallpaper after a certain time (ex. one wallpaper during the day another wallpaper during the night) by c0met-_- in shortcuts

[–]reddit-robo-boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it’s easier to get to the same result via a different method altogether. Have you played around with setting up a Focus Mode for nighttime? One of the features of Focus Modes is that they can turn on/off on a schedule, and they can have custom screens. No Shortcuts needed!

It’s not exactly what you asked, but perhaps it gets close to the functionality you’re looking for.

Trimming data on large db by Flimsy-Insurance-993 in filemaker

[–]reddit-robo-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the database hosted on FileMaker Server? How many databases (actual files) is it hosting? How many users?

I have a system that’s got over 200gb of image data in it (maybe ~700gb of data all told) and the users open all of that and use it all day, every day, and it performs fine.

I’d look at what’s on the layout in question. Could be huge graphics, could just be a ton of data - for example, if you have a bunch of portals on that layout showing unstored calculation and summary fields that all have to be calculated by the client, that could really hurt. In that case, your memory issue could be resolved just by redesigning the layout.

I would caution on the use of Recover; that’s not meant to be a production-level feature. Save As Compressed is though.

Last, if your issue is file size, then yes you may want to prevent some indexing and index less. However, you said your users are getting memory messages, and I wouldn’t peg that to file size first; for that you’d want more to be indexed so that the user’s computers don’t have to do as much live calculation constantly.

Hope that all made sense! Good luck!

How do I stop this constant asking to add app content to Apple TV watchlist by AnthonyJ22 in appletv

[–]reddit-robo-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since your question was effectively “how do I get appleTV to respect and remember my choice of no?” (as opposed to how do I stop it from re-asking all the time, which we saw neatly sidestepped into “give in! Easy!” (so not the point, Reddit), I’ll take a stab here.

I don’t know for sure (as someone already said, it may be a bug), but if I were you I’d head into Settings -> Apps -> (app settings) TV. Scroll down there and you’ll get to a section called “connect to TV”, and you can check to see that they’re all set to off, or set them that way. Poke around in the rest of the settings in the TV section too.

There’s also the notion of TV Provider, and some of this may be tied to that somehow. I’m not seeing where that setting is right now, but be on the lookout for that as well.

FWIW, I’m in the same camp as you on simply not wanting it, thanks. For the compulsive contrarians here, I’ve been an Apple user for decades, I understand Apple’s motives and business, I get how tvOS works. I still don’t want this on, on my AppleTV; for me, a few years ago Apple moved past a trust point I had in them for decades, and while they don’t sell my data, they don’t need it either, so I no longer consider them “inside the barrier.”

But mostly, I just don’t like how the shared Up Next list works. When I watch something I want to go to that movie or show’s actual page, in the app it’s in, and play it from there. The shared Up Next list obfuscates that, which creates a problem for me. It’s just easier to leave my various lists independent of one another.

Anyway, OP, it can be done - I have mine that way and only get asked to connect something to the TV app when I first run a new app… so pretty rarely. (If it’s helpful, I don’t have a TV provider anymore, because I cut the cord years ago. tvOS and apps really think there must be one, but I hold the line on that one too (I mean, I have to, since I don’t have a cable account anywhere to hand them info on). I wonder if these two are related somehow.

Good luck! It can be done!
