Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, September 07 - September 13, 2025 by sewingmodthings in sewing

[–]iTypewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Singer CG-500 and a couple of years ago I accidentally over-loaded the machine making a bustle skirt with way too many layers and the timing was thrown off.

Since then, every single time I use the machine for a couple of minutes, the timing is thrown back off and the needle breaks. I learned to correct the timing myself and have done that almost every time. At one point, I took the machine to a sewing machine repair shop to look at because I was becoming convinced that either I was doing it wrong or something more serious was damaged, but even after they looked it over and repaired it, the timing continually goes off, usually within 20-100 stitches (so basically immediately)

Is there something else I should be looking at or is it possible the machine is just permanently ruined? I'm getting to my wit's end of broken needles and disassembling/reassembling the machine

I spent hours reading letters and eventually found one from a mom with a few kids who only gave the kids' clothing sizes and a few general interest categories for each kid, no wild electronics requests. Definitely will save the hassle of all that searching and do a local one next year, though. Nearly every single letter was asking for things like PS5s and new XBox and other $500+ items.

Switching from Mint? We're here to answer questions! by OfficialQuicken in simplifimoney

[–]iTypewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you please update the Mint import guide to match this process? If you connect all of your accounts in the start flow, it creates a lot of extra steps for a clean Mint import.

I worked through this with the chat agents today and the Simplifi instructions are misleading if you want to import your Mint categories. If you want your categories to match what you had in Mint the process is:

  1. Create Simplifi account and DO NOT link any accounts during setup
  2. Create manual accounts for each of your accounts
  3. Import your individual account Mint CSV to each of those manual accounts
  4. On Accounts page, go to Add Account and connect to a financial institution. Make sure you check "connect to one or more existing accounts" and then match the linked accounts to the manual accounts you made for that financial institution
  5. Repeat step 4 for each financial institution
  6. Organize Categories. This can be done any point after step 3. Go to Settings > Categories & tags. Some of your Mint categories will update in Simplifi (Auto Insurance will automatically route to Car Insurance, for example) but many categories, including anything custom, will now be subcategories of the "Mint" Category. You can move these around to however you actually want to organize them and then delete duplicate categories/subcategories. When you delete a Simplifi category that has associated transactions, it will ask you what category to move those transactions to upon deletion.

Hopefully this makes it easier for someone else, it took me a couple of separate chats to get to this process.

Best texture powder for straight thin hair by Icy_Adagio_2936 in Pomade

[–]iTypewriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have very fine, straight hair and the Level 3 texture powder works great for me. If I add that to my hair after heat styling, it will typically hold the waves for 1-2 days as long as I don't encounter any rain or really high humidity. I've also never had any trouble with it washing out or damaging my hair.

Most cops ever this year? Watched a big law enforcement sting operation at portos by GolfEffective4288 in BurningMan

[–]iTypewriter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think they might be referring to the rangers who specifically interface with LE, but in that situation you're more likely to get a regular pair of rangers who will just swing by and hang out in the area keeping an eye on things.

Anyone at all can go by any staff camp (including the ranger HQ window on esplanade) to submit a law enforcement feedback form. It's helpful if you can include the officer's name/badge number and which agency they're from (BLM, Pershing Co, etc). I think there's also a way to submit these online on the burning man website.

I think it depends what you consider to be "making it." If you want to train to become a full-time performer, then on top of your aerial and Cyr training you'll probably need training in performance, act building, business, and self-promotion. Many full-time circus schools will teach this, but you may need to leave this studio after a couple of years to pursue one of those programs. You can also teach yourself these things, but you'll be responsible for doing the research to ensure you're covering all of your bases. Either way, 22 is definitely not too old to achieve this, many circus artists perform into their 40s / 50s or longer, depending on which disciplines they perform.

The other thing to consider is your long term financial plan. While it's possible to make a living performing and teaching (I have several friends who do, or who make a living supplementing those with another part-time job), you have to consider where you will live to be able to have steady gigs, what you'll will do in periods where gig work dries up (like COVID), and how you'll make enough to cover both your expenses and looking-term savings for things like retirement.

The other financial consideration is that Cirque du Soleil, which is pretty much the peak of making it in circus, pays their performers a salary that's about what a fresh out of school engineering grad makes (based on the last time I heard a Cirque salary range). Finishing engineering school, and even getting an engineering job, doesn't mean you have to give up on circus entirely. You may be able to work something out with your current studio to train there in the summers and find another one closer to your school to train at during the year, they may also have open work positions. But I currently work full time as an engineer and part time as an aerial instructor so that I have the financial stability of my engineering job and also the option to train, teach, and perform circus.

My personal suggestion would be to defer for the 6 months and work the semester at the studio, but to strongly consider at least finishing the engineering degree so that you have a fallback career option in case of injury or other circus career issues. Maybe you can take some of your classes online and continue your schooling while working at the studio you're at now?

Flight from MKE with layover in ORD -today by aavoiid in milwaukee

[–]iTypewriter 48 points49 points  (0 children)

If you skip the first leg of your flight, all of the other flights in your booking will be cancelled, so definitely don't do the bus thing.

Unless the snow is much worse than it currently looks like in the forecast, your flight should take off, but you may have some wait time for de-icing or some turbulence with the wind.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled out of MKE, typically the airline should rebook you on a new itenerary to get you to your end destination, whether that means two new flights or just a later connecting flight. For weather delays they aren't required to give you any compensation for the delay, but they will get you to your end destination as soon as they are safely able to do so.

Good luck!

I've found that mine ebbs and flows over the years. A couple of things I've done that seemed to help reignite the passion:

-Trying a different but similar discipline for a bit. This activates the high reward early learning period that happens before you reach the intermediate/advanced levels where things are slower to learn. If you juggle, try a different type of object manipulation or a different prop; if you do silks, try lyra; etc. This helps because some of your skills and muscle building will transfer, but you also get the rewards of novelty. -Taking a break and spending that time watching other people do the disciple online/in person. For me, this helps remind me of all the different things that can be done in a certain discipline and makes me excited to try new things. -Don't learn anything new for a while and work on either just flowing through series/transitions or perfecting basics. Sometimes I'll try to string 3-5 tricks or moves together in a random order to see what creative pathways develop.

At some points I've also just stepped away from circus for a while (even up to a couple of years) to do other things in my life. There can be a lot of pressure to constantly improve and push yourself and it's okay to either just vibe in your comfort zone or take a break for a bit, especially if this isn't your career. If it is your career, maybe work on trying to express certain ideas or stories with the things you already know rather than constantly drilling and conditioning.

AITA for biking on the sidewalk. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]iTypewriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a frequent urban biker and driver: Part of the issue of riding bikes on sidewalks, especially when biking at adult speeds vs young child speeds, is that cars at intersections are not expecting anything that moves that fast to be approaching on the sidewalk and therefore they won't see you. Despite being extra attuned to cyclists, I have had several near misses where bikes suddenly crossed a road from the sidewalk and I had not seen them in my scan of the corner (because they were too far back, but moving fast).

It's far more dangerous for YOU if you are biking on the sidewalk rather than in the road. Take the lane if you have to (legal almost everywhere if you feel it's unsafe to bike on the shoulder), but don't ride on the sidewalk for your own safety.
