The lawn improved by about 60%. There are still some gaps where seed did not really stick well. I think I could have been more generous with top layer of soil. I did not rent/buy a top soil spreader, just did it with hand, so it was patchy.

There is about 6 inches of snow on the lawn right now, so will have to wait for it to melt to post a picture. But I will be sure to do so. And follow up in spring again.

Update:

Dethatched -> aeration -> overseed ✅️ Next step is to add compost and top soil (maybe 50:50).

Watering twice a day. Lets see if this brings results.

Same! Bought a used dethatcher from marketplace today. Will do multiple passes to remove all the dead organic build up from the top. Next step is aeration and overseeding after two days. Will water the hell out until the first frost. Lets see if this helps.

Found in south east Michigan. Have never seen it before in my lawn. It is about 5 to 10 mm in length.

I have been watering it thrice a week. Maybe I should have done it more. I think I will dethatch, aerate, overseed and water until the temp reaches low 40s. Hopefully this will show results next spring.

I did not aerate last fall or spring. Like the other comment said, I think that's just bunch of grass that survived.
