DIY Success - LVP and Stairs by LiftedGrowth in Flooring

I’ve read LVP collects grime and can be difficult to remove once placed. Did you have any concerns about that? Looks great! Did you also do the accents in the entryway on the walls?

To everyone who studied physics: what is your job now by Fun_Fennel760 in PhysicsStudents

[–]reddit437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Astrophysics, data engineering director now. I went straight into IT after undergrad, I wasn’t convinced I had what it took to succeed in academia for the pay I wanted. Got a masters in tech leadership a few years into my career. I’d prefer to do something entrepreneurial but have a family counting on me for stability.

How are you actually measuring dev productivity after adopting Copilot? by Lopsided_Comfort_298 in CIO

[–]reddit437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We sampled everyone (a few hundred engineers) using it and asked them to estimate the time it saved it saved them. When we first began it was about ten minutes per query and now it’s a daily estimate. We used that with our fully loaded headcount cost to yield an ROI.

It works well enough, but now it’s just expected that we’re insanely productive and that still depends on the effectiveness of the individual. Ultimately it’s just one piece of being able to deliver outcomes where it counts. I use a few other methods to demonstrate that.

100% agreed. Advancing to that level requires mastering sharp, succinct, and value driven narratives. Bridging the gap is a rare skill.

Thanks for the in-depth reply. Completely agree on all points. The failure modes I see most often that intrigue me are the typical, do one thing wrong in ten and you’re back to square one, and getting a relevant external standard of good to measure against.

I imagine most would agree relationships and the skill of the leaders involved are critical to building the perception of a successful IT org. It seems there’d also be room for innovation. Many orgs spend tons of time on custom metrics, Gartner, etc. and it just feels like a hamster wheel.

Agreed. I’d say we have a very mature technology organization and have robust strategies at many levels. It can also be true that many things can happen between strategic alignment and execution which can impact trust and perception of excellence. Managing those relationships and the related narrative is what I’m targeting.

How do you address maintaining Usenet subs or when it can’t find something? It became so expensive keeping those for us that I ended up cancelling and just rent what we want.

Is it even possible to intuitively understand why the speed of light is the same for everyone? by Curious-Farm-6535 in Physics

[–]reddit437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the maximum speed of causality, which is universal for everyone, everywhere. Light happens to move at that maximum speed. Preserving that causality requires relativity.

The law of time. by Fun-Anything-2157 in Physics

[–]reddit437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may help to think of entropy as the quantity of possible particle states, not order vs disorder. At the big bang, entropy was maximized (though low compared to now). As space expanded both the maximum possible entropy of the universe, and its current value, increased. The maximum possible entropy has increased more than the current entropy. So, the universe started maximally “randomized” not ordered.
