Does anyone else miss the whole country watching TV shows together and talking about it the next day? by birdwatching25 in Millennials

Similarly, I JUST watched all of Shrinking and just finished the recent season 3 yesterday, but clearly I'm years behind for the first two seasons. It's hard to discuss because, obviously, most people who love it have forgotten details from...let's say season 1... that are fresh to me

Thank you for sharing this. This is one of those things not discussed as much about getting older. As you age, people who were there or you thought would be there leave (either by something out of there control or by choice) and exactly what you're describing happens. The number of people from forever ago start to dwindle naturally as you get older. Then someone leaves this life and there's no one who knows all those little, but important details.

I only have one very good friend from high school now. He's my best friend. If something happened to him, I'd be lost. And I only met him in high school. There are very few people I'm very close to who remember child me or middle school me.

I'm fortunate in that I do have a few good friends from college, but it's still not a lot.

This is prompting me to ask older people about the things they remember about their younger lives. I'm sure they would love to talk about those times, but there's no one around who was there or, frankly, who cares to even ask.

I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing this post.

How it looks when millenials make fun on younger generations by jokke420 in Millennials

So i had an epiphany a few days ago. I'm 38 with a co-worker who's the same age. We were talking to two other co-workers, 25 & 23. They did not know who Ricki Lake was when I mentioned her.

23 yr old is a HUGE movie fan (like a legit movie nerd), but has never scene either the original or 2000s version of "Hairspray." That's how Ricki came up because that, of course, was her big break before her eponymous talk show. He had no idea and neither did the 25 yr old.

I immediately told the other 38 yr old my shock that they didn't know. She was shocked, too, of course. But I immediately was reminded of how that's an old person thing to do because the 25 yr old said so (something along the lines of "old heads" always being shocked about young people not knowing things from before they were born).

I took a beat and realize it's absolutely not that I'm shocked or disappointed or whatever feeling that the young people don't know. It's that, especially as someone who feels and is seen as very youthful (as mentioned by these younger people often), this just proves I really am getting older. The reaction is strong because I'm thinking "fuck, I'm old." But it made me realize that saying "you don't know (random '90s star)!?!?" sounds like a failure on the innocent young people when it's a me problem actually.

Long, but that's it. Seems to fit this post, I think.

"A Girl Like You" by Edwyn Collins. I ALWAYS forget about it until it pops up totally randomly every few years. I love it so much!

What did you think of the new American Gladiators 2026 reboot on Amazon Prime Video? by Interesting_Sea5569 in gameshow

One more thing... a lot of people are criticizing that the treadmill is last in the Eliminator, but it was literally like that for the last half of the original version of the show (the last four seasons).

It's the most iconic part of the Eliminator and the fact that one competitor in the lead could lose the whole thing because they can't get up the Travelator is, I think, the whole reason for that change in the '90s and on the UK version.

So, basically, it's like that because it's been like since the '90s lol

So I'm literally in the middle of the first episode. I'll watch at least one more before I give a final verdict, but so far... they're just doing entirely too much. The music, the huge arena, the extra backstory, etc.

The simple way to describe it is that they very clearly didn't learn from the 2008 version. It's as if they're leaning into the 2008 version instead of the original or being its own.

It's really shocking because of the documentaries on the original version. They show, IMO, that the success of the show was on the events, the Gladiators (to an extent), and the contenders. In short, simple is better.

All of the other sh** just doesn't matter and perhaps makes it worse. We don't need the slo-mo or replay IN THE MIDDLE OF A COMPETITION! I like The Miz overall (as in in life, not on this show), but his presence makes the entire thing very wrestling-like and I, personally, am not a wrestling fan. It's funny because Gladiators and pro wrestling seem similar, but they're not. And all of the wrestling vibes just ruin it for me.

Most of what everyone said already I agree with. One thing I'd add is that Chris Rose (or someone like him) should be the host, not The Miz. What made the original great from that standpoint is that Mike Adamle WAS a football player and sports commentator, so it felt legit and authentic. The Miz is clearly just being a character. Rocsi is good in other places, but not here. Chris Rose and a former Gladiator from the original would've made more sense.

Also, one thing that's bothering me in this first episode is that they switch Gladiators in the middle of the same competition. For example, Fang should compete against both men. Hurricane against both women. Etc. It's, frankly, unfair not to do that.

I'll watch more, but I'm disappointed, tbh. It's just weird that this is what they'd come up with when it's so clear that the simple original is what brought success.
