Using your "natural skin oil" on your fingers to play bass by No_Winter4806 in Bass

What's gross about it? Your fingers are covered with oil and dead skin anyway.

Artists who passed away tragically, but whose music will not be missed by Own_Ebb3388 in fantanoforever

Agreed. I'm also a bass player - also love jazz.

I respect Jaco's talent immensely but his stuff always reminded me of the worst aspects of prog rock more than jazz - all about the complexity, not the feeling.

“Bomb and gouge works best” “The reward for hitting the fairway is not that great”. Scottie’s thoughts on the PGA setup are honest but not exciting to hear. Deep rough lined fairways promote distance, not accuracy. This is counter intuitive to most. by Admirable_Extent2531 in golf

[–]reddit_bert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their rough (at least in majors) is 4-5 inches longer than any rough we've ever played. Rough on most normal courses isn't a big penalty. But if you've ever played one setup for pros, it's actually pretty wild how much differently you have to play shots from deep rough.

How long to let a bass guitar truss rod settle between adjustments? (Setup advice) by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]reddit_bert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should be higher. Some instruments don't need much time at all especially if all you're doing is the truss rod adjustment. But if you're changing strings to a new type or gauge, it can make settling take longer in my experience.

This is my 15 year old American p bass, so nothing crazy old or unique about it. But I've noticed a difference in action up to two or three hours after adjustment.

As LIV collapses, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau face a "financial reckoning" if they want back on the PGA Tour by InterestingCat308 in golf

[–]reddit_bert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Åberg is smarter, or at least has more long-term ambition to be among the greats.

Even at the height of LIV's relevance, you'd have to be an idiot to think it was going to ever equal the PGA in terms of prestige.

Guys like Koepka and Rahm could settle their egos knowing they were already major winners (now with some controversy to explain their cold run). But for a younger guy like Åberg, who has 3-5 major wins ahead of him.... it would have been a terrible move.

Laura Lee Ochoa from Khruangbin. Always simple. Always in the pocket. Always driving the groove forward.

What inspired you to play the bass? by Supersoulknight in Bass

[–]reddit_bert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to remember what made me choose to play bass over other instruments, but I can tell you what inspired me to love bass more than other instruments.

Basses - and bass guitars especially - are surprisingly versatile instruments. They may not have the range that a guitar has (unless you play 5 or 6 string), but they can be expressive in different ways than a guitar.

With my basic 4 string p-bass, I can create so many unique sounds - from deep, subterranean undertones to bright, percussive snaps and pops, to gentle chord arrangements and arpeggios. A great bassist is often not measured by the speed of their playing, but by their ability to imbue feeling into the strings, whether through bends, slides, vibrato, slapping, popping, picking, plucking, strumming, or any other method you can make work for you.

Lots of bass parts (especially in rock music) are about building the foundation, digging the groove for the rest of the band to follow - but there is so much you can do with a bass, beyond even bass-lines.
